Trapped Toddler Parents of Winter 2020/21 Support Thread - Puddlesuits at the ready!

Are you the parent of a small child who doesn't yet sit still for more than five minutes? Do local lockdowns mean there are no baby and toddler groups for miles? Are you sick of walking the same three routes every day since March? Then come and join our support thread! I have started this after some of us had a good moan on a thread in AIBU ("To be worried about staying sane stuck inside all winter with a 2 year old?") because I thought it might be nice to share ideas/activities/general moans and concerns, over what is probably going to be a tricky winter for those of us with babies and toddlers.

Don't forget the answer to all your prayers though... The ever reliable puddlesuit. Puddlesuits are absolutely mandatory this year, and you are expected to wrestle your child into one and make them jump in puddles daily. If your child goes blue with cold, administer a swift dose of hot chocolate and hope your local Amazon delivery driver gets move on with your latest order of kinetic sand/playdough/ball pit/stickers. Failing all else, Peppa Pig is omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent, in October as in March.

I've ordered some water beads, I'll report back with how we get on! :)

Following... 2yo and a 8 week old. Not had time to read the whole thread but I've just invested in a duvet coat and wellies for me and one of those colour in pop up castles from Hobbycraft (saving that for a biblical weather day)

OMG @MonkeyPuddle she’s so gorgeous!! Love those cheeks!

I’m typing this between contractions in the birthing unit! 😂

WeSearchedHereWeSearchedThere · 03/11/2020 23:42

A good phrase to search Pinterest etc is “invitation to play”. It’s the posh version of “toys are more exciting on a tuff tray” Grin I do find that if I spend 10 mins putting a little farm set up, trains, etc, together of an evening, it sparks my boy’s interest far more than him getting it out of the box. Different locations work too - put it all on the dining table once and he played on and off all day!

PolarBearStrength · 04/11/2020 06:08

She’s here!

Our Mud and Bloom subscription box for November arrived today - just in time because DD and I are kicking our heels today. I haven't had a really good look, but the rafts are pinecone gnomes, leaf mirrors, make a stand for air plants. Air plants and Russian snowdrop bulbs also included. Can take a picture if anyone is interested in seeing what's included

OhRosalind · 04/11/2020 12:49

Ooh bulbs are a good idea.

I just discovered a pack of those mini pom-poms I panic-bought before the last lockdown. Any good ideas for how to use them? Can’t remember what I was planning to use them for.

And for the Orchard Toys fans, which games would you recommend starting with for younger toddlers?

Motherofmonsters · 04/11/2020 13:17

Ohroslind- we mostly use pom poms for sticking on paper pictures. I have used them on a tuff tray - with string or masking tape make a Criss cross pattern all over it, chuck the pom poms on and then they use tongs to pick them up and put in a tub

LionMummyRoar · 04/11/2020 13:22

Thank you so much for starting this thread! I nearly lost my mind during the first lock down...on maternity leave with a 3 year old and newborn...but I did learn some tricks. Back at work now, but still need to keep the boys busy...
@OhRosalind I would recommend the shopping list game, 3 year old loved it before we could really make it a memory game.
Things that mine love (well the older one loves and the little one follows him round)

  • scavenger hunts...draw lots of pictures on A4 card and let him tick them off when he finds them (this helps with very very long walks when we run out of dinosaurs to talk about)
  • treasure hunts - little clues to find treasure at the end. Treasure is usually a little chocolate or new library book etc
  • rainbow colour rice (dye uncooked rice with food colouring) - tuff tray magic for burying dinosaurs that then need careful excavation with anything from kitchen tongs to digger trucks. Be warned, will need to hover afterwards, but my boys love that too! Win win!
MessAllOver · 04/11/2020 13:59

@OhRosalind. Footprint Christmas trees! I made a nice one with DS with pom poms as baubles last year which we framed (not as neat as the ones in the pictures though Grin)...We also made lots of messy ones too!

Tips...use a large green ink pad for less mess than paint. Have wet wipes or tea towel ready to wipe off ink/paint. Don't do in a carpeted area!

Messallover - that's a lovely idea, I'll have to give that one a go.

I've popped into town today to stock up on craft materials and activity books to hopefully see me through. I'm sure they'll end up being ignore though.

ReallySpicyCurry · 04/11/2020 14:28

@OhRosalind Smelly Wellies and the Postbox game are from age 2-4 and are lovely.
