Trapped Toddler Parents of Winter 2020/21 Support Thread - Puddlesuits at the ready!

Are you the parent of a small child who doesn't yet sit still for more than five minutes? Do local lockdowns mean there are no baby and toddler groups for miles? Are you sick of walking the same three routes every day since March? Then come and join our support thread! I have started this after some of us had a good moan on a thread in AIBU ("To be worried about staying sane stuck inside all winter with a 2 year old?") because I thought it might be nice to share ideas/activities/general moans and concerns, over what is probably going to be a tricky winter for those of us with babies and toddlers.

Don't forget the answer to all your prayers though... The ever reliable puddlesuit. Puddlesuits are absolutely mandatory this year, and you are expected to wrestle your child into one and make them jump in puddles daily. If your child goes blue with cold, administer a swift dose of hot chocolate and hope your local Amazon delivery driver gets move on with your latest order of kinetic sand/playdough/ball pit/stickers. Failing all else, Peppa Pig is omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent, in October as in March.

@Motherofmonsters glad DS is ok, sounds booody traumatic!

I’m at very impressed with the craftiness going on this thread, we’ve been sticking stickers to Christmas tree shaped card and will be standing them up in a toilet roll tube. It’s quite a nice craft as he gets bored after a 10 mins or so but it’s minimal effort to set up and no mess so I don’t mind getting it out multiple times.

DD is now a month old, she cluster fed from 8pm - 3am this morning, so I’m utterly knackered and on the sugary coffee. Afternoon of toys and tv for DS. His gymnastics class restarted this morning which is an utter godsend, he loves going and they work them really hard so he’s knackered now 😂

We’re now in a bubble with my parents, under the new ‘baby under 1 year’ rule so I’ve spent the day at my mums. So nice! Even if we were all in layers with the window open...

I’ve got a big box of packing peanuts, so wondering what to do with that tomorrow. Probably just Chuck them all on the tuff tray with his diggers!

About the under 1s bubble - for the pp who was worried she'd only be able to keep it for a week - your DC just had to be under 1 on 2nd December but after they turn one you can still keep it.

We had a nice whatsapp video call with my nonna (grandma) in Italy today as my cousin was round bringing her shopping, we have made tentative plans to go there for Easter (or Summer) and get DS2 baptized in my nonnas village church...it'll be a nice treat for her as she's been "kept in prison all year!"

prettygirlincrimsonrose A laminator will change your life, you'll be constantly looking for stuff to laminate now.

Motherofmonsters that's an epic gingerbread house! I'm envious I've only ever made one once and it was a disaster. I did have 30 small humans trying to help though so that probably didn't help. Xmas Grin

LassoOfTruth I'm glad to hear you're DD is ok. Falling down the stairs is one of those heart stopping moments but also a right of passage she's super lucky she didn't break anything.

MonkeyPuddle I can't believe your DD is already a whole month old. That seems to have flown by.

Camomila that sounds like a lovely plan, I'll keep my fingers crossed that you can go over next summer, I'm sure it would be incredibly special.

your DC just had to be under 1 on 2nd December but after they turn one you can still keep it.

A friend sent me a screenshot of this and it made my week, we just scrape in!

Anyways appologies for being absent, it's been pretty chaotic here with yet more teething. We've also been stuck inside for a few days due to absolutely horrendous weather. I'm hoping its better by the weekend. Not much going on other than preparing for a very surreal first birthday party. Sadly my partners parents can't get over due to being in a lower tier so it looks like it will involve at least some zoom calls. It's remarkable to think how many times small human has been on a zoom chat in the past 9 months.

Hope your move went ok @LassoOfTruth?

We had snow today and it provided hours of amusement (and a risk of finger frostbite haha).

Planning to do air dry clay ornaments tomorrow but this is likely to be abandoned for something less messy depending on how the baby sleeps.

Does anyone have good recommendations for any more “educational” Christmas tv programmes? Or more “educational” programmes (for a 2/3 yr old) in general? Put that in quotes as I’m not sure what I really mean by that- I know they can only learn a limited amount from tv but some programmes feel more worthwhile than others? Thanks

Hello all!

We went to a pottery painting place today, had prepped DS3 beforehand for a few days so he knew what was going to happen.

He was excited. Jumped into the car to go there.

Got there. He hated it. Went shy, whiney, crying. DD 4w, had a footprint bauble done.
She started crying.

I paid the £35, not including the £10 deposit I paid and bundled us all into the car.

Sent DP to Morribobs to get me some cava.

I’ve since worked out it cost us 81p per minute of pure fucking torture.

But DS will have an unwillingly painted T Rex to display proudly. Cos he would make a bloody bauble.

ReallySpicyCurry · 05/12/2020 21:50

Oh my God @MonkeyPuddle you poor sod. Never has a bottle of cava been more deserved. These things are sent to test us WineCake

Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the run up to Christmas. We're going to decorate baubles, make Christmas biscuits, and put up the tree tomorrow. We have also made felt Christmas drinks coasters (Baker Ross) and cardboard wreaths (stuff I had in the craft drawer)

We've still to make proper wreaths as well. I feel that I'm doing quite well with the activities at the moment, we're also getting out plenty as the N.I weather has, mercifully, taken a good long break from its default winter setting of Relentless Rain.

However Christmas is easy isn't it, there's an abundance of crafty ideas and kits floating round, I feel that from January onwards it'll be a bit of a hungry gap until we get the pom poms and glue out for Easter.

Oh no @monkeypuddle, it's a nightmare when they don't go along with the fun you've arranged.

We also had a failed making memory moment. We decorated the tree and put the lights up today but DS was far to excited and was jumping allover the sofa, not listening at all and being a bit rough with DD. Instead of magical it just ended up with us constantly trying to get him to calm down.

New day tomorrow where we off to a tunnel of lights. Hopefully that'll go better

@MonkeyPuddle. Sorry to hear that Sad. God, trying to make 'magic moments' as a parent really is a torture sometimes. When they flop and you've gone to all that effort (and wasted £££), it's soul-destroying, but you don't want them turning round age 10 and saying "you never did anything with us" Confused.

Had this last year with Father Christmas. Booked two fairly expensive grotto experiences for DS then just 2. Should have known better...he was scared witless and cried most of the time. We ended up meeting him again for free after a panto we went to (which DS loved because they had falling snow) and DS went straight to him and sat on his knee no fuss and we have a lovely picture (as opposed to the screaming, crying ones we'd actually paid for!). I'm actually happy to have an excuse for not going through that again this year...instead we'll just be "posting" a letter to the North Pole.

Aah thats a shame about the pottery painting. We did pottery painting yesterday too but at home (then the lady will come and collect it) so less stress all round - but still a bit stressful trying to get nice handprints for the baubles!

I am annoyed at DH this morning, he has taken the DC to the park so I can clean - and then when they were all getting their coats on asked if I wanted to come too, then when I said no he moaned that I'd rather clean than do family activities...
a) if you want me to come don't ask me when you have your coats on and I'm still in pjamas.
b) If we don't clean at the weekend then the laundry piles up, there's no clean school uniform, DH moans he has to clean stuff...etc etc.
c) we are meant to be getting DS2 used to no mummy in preparation for when I go back to work.

Right, I'm off to stress eat Christmas chocolate and clean the kitchen.

@MonkeyPuddle are you looking back and laughing yet?

I'm miserable as sin here with sciatica. I've had it before and thought 'ooh thats painful' as I carry on my normal life.
This time I've been paralysed and H has to even take me to the loo. I'm lucky as my friend has taken toddler out a few times and hopefully the end is in sight when I give birth which quite frankly will be a relief.

Now I have meds I'm dragging myself round the house more. Eldest has made a snowy tuff spot for toddler too. I'll post pics later.

@Camomila enjoy your peace.

MonkeyPuddle It sounds like a very eventful day. Im sure it'll make a great story in years to come. I hope it makes you smile eveey year in future as you put out the Trex each Christmas. Grin

Camomila - I hope you enjoyed you're peace and quiet and the cleaning didn't interrupt your chocolate eating too much. 😂

footprintsintheslow - I'm glad to hear people are taking care of you sciatica is no fun, roll on the baby snuggles. Smile Also your eldest's tuff tray sounds fab, I hope the toddler enjoyed it.

Nothing much happening this end. Once the small human finally decides to nap I shall attempt to create a christmas tuff tray with beads, tinsel, ribbon and baubles but its very much dependent on hin actually falling asleep.

Also totally random question but has anyone else still got an optimistic ice cream van driving round the streets near their house? We've had one drive past us music on full blast for the last 3 days despite it being a constant stream of either snow or rain. Confused

footprintsintheslow · 06/12/2020 15:37

Ha yes to the ice cream van! I always just assume they are dealing drugs. 🤪

I saw this nice idea earlier and shows you don't need a tuff tray.

We’ve made washing up liquid snow this afternoon, the trains and dinosaurs are loving it. Easy clean up as well so mummy doesn’t mind too much!

Yeah! It’s got a slightly green tinge to it admittedly Grin but it kept DS occupied for 20 mins or so, plus he enjoyed helping clear it up.

Been and collected the fired pottery that we painted last week which ended up with both kids crying.

This is what DP painted, fuck me it’s hideous 😂

@MonkeyPuddle one to treasure! Our preschool sent an order form home to do ceramics...knowing the quality of the artwork he normally brings home I declined... I was pleasantly surprised by the footprints I did with them, picked those up this week.

We decorated the Christmas tree today. I did the lights and breakables (all at four feet or higher) last night then let him go wild with a big bag of baubles. There are 13 on one branch... but we had fun and amazingly no meltdowns (from either of us...).

Camomila · 12/12/2020 14:39

That is hilarious Grin
We're getting ours dropped off next week - DS1s plate was just red and more red Grin

He came home with a Christmas card written all by himself yesterday - "I lov yoo mummee and I luv cudlz" I was very proud!
We're doing Christmas cards this year so every couple of days I get him to write his and his brothers name on 2 or 3 - sneaky handwriting practise.

DS1 has gone to nonna's (in our support bubble) for hopefully a sleepover. I'm listening to classical music instead of cartoons about vehicles and DH has taken the baby to the supermarket (munching on a bit of bagette while sitting on the trolley seat is his favourite day out!)

The weather looks rubbish tomorrow, but I don't want to go anywhere indoors and potentially get tracked and traced over Christmas. Maybe DH will drive us to the (pebble) beach - I don't mind a bit of rain if there's no mud too.
