The best hot chocolate

I would like to know what hot chocolate you drink at home. My favourite is Costa hot chocolate, but unfortunately I cannot make it at home, and they don’t seem to make any pods for a tassimo machine to help my craving.
What do you recommend?
Oh and I probably should mention I don’t like the instant Cadbury hot chocolate. The galaxy one is okay but doesn’t compare to Costa. Thank you.

I agree with @Countessfrog, Charbonnel & Walker, made with milk and not water. See my username - I have tried many many hot chocolates, and Waitrose stock this one so it's pretty easy to find.

If you're prepared to spend a little time making a batch of the dry mix (it makes a huge quantity) Jamie Oliver's hot chocolate recipe makes incredible hit chocolate.

I keep a jar made up in the cupboard.

My favourite is actually using cocoa powder and milk with a small amount of ground arrowroot to thicken it up (or you could use cornstarch). I follow this recipe veggieandthebeastfeast.com/2014/11/10/super-creamy-vegan-hot-chocolate/ . It's a vegan recipe but I normally use real milk, although hazelnut milk makes an amazing hot chocolate.

I use coco with soy milk as I don't like cows milk. Then add a bit of sugar. I've never found a hot chocolate that is as deep in flavour as coco. Also very few are non milk.

Another vote for Spanish hot chocolate.
Am gutted that they no longer seem to have distribution into supermarkets and I think they might be online only now.
I can get the twinings hot chocolate occasionally in middle aisle of Aldi and it's good but not as good as the Spanish one...

@blue25

Hotel Chocolat hazelnut flavour, made in their velvetiser. Delicious.
Seconding the velvetiser- makes any hot chocolate amazing. The white hot chocolate is also really nice with a pinch of salt 👌🏻
mouldygrapes · 19/10/2020 19:59

This is amazing and super easy to make a big batch smittenkitchen.com/2014/12/decadent-hot-chocolate-mix/

VenusClapTrap · 19/10/2020 19:59

I like the Hotel Chocolat 70% Dark one. The orange one is very good too. Love my Velvetiser!

banivani · 19/10/2020 20:09

Cocoa powder, hot milk, sugar. ‘Tis far from pods and the like I was raised. [sniff]

DanceWithYourBalloon · 19/10/2020 20:11

Hotel Chocolat

H1978 · 19/10/2020 20:28

We love the twinnings one, it’s a really rich chocolate flavour.

Dawninglory · 19/10/2020 20:32

Green and blacks too, with full fat milk, (a dash of dark rum in mummy's!) Whipped cream and marshmallows 😋 just the ticket after a long chilly walk!

user1471464218 · 19/10/2020 20:35

I don't have the velvetiser but I've been blending hot milk, cocoa and sugar in a saucepan on the hob using my stick blender and it's delish. The texture is bubbly but smooth.

UncleBunclesHouse · 19/10/2020 20:37

Green and Blacks or Hotel Chocolat

vintagechick43 · 19/10/2020 20:38

Twinnings hot chocolate is definitely the best.

thegcatsmother · 19/10/2020 21:12

The Twinings one, or slowly melt choc drops with milk in a pan.

Okay. This thread makes me want to rustle up some hot chocolate. I’m not usually a hot chocolate drinker but all the recipes are piquing my interest and making me crave chocolatey comfort.

Can I use heavy (single) cream instead of milk? There’s an unopened carton in the fridge that needs to be used.

Cafe Direct San Cristobal - it's perfect! 😋

PollyannaWhittier · 19/10/2020 22:48

The dark one from here made in the shaker thing. I'm a Costa fan too, and I think it's quite close.

Yes you definitely can use single cream instead of milk. It'll be thicker but that's a good thing, in my opinion.

My favourite hot chocolate is a recipe from Boutique Baking by Peggy Porschen. It involves milk, whipping cream, dark chocolate, cocoa and vanilla extract. Perfect.

JingsMahBucket · 20/10/2020 15:17

@DratThatCat perfect thank you. That's exactly what I was thinking and I wanted a thicker hot chocolate as well.

FerryCrossTheMersey · 20/10/2020 17:31

Thank you for all your replies. So many I haven’t heard of, got a lot to try.

Valor

Both made with milk

I've gone off Green and Blacks because they are marketed as ethical, but aren't (owned by Kraft and use Palm Oil).

Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Dark hot chocolate is tastier IMO.

I stopped buying it for the same reason.
