I'm not fat but I'm hardly a dainty little bird of a thing.

I've just received a size 8 dress from White Stuff, having sent the 10 back because it was far too big. It's still too big!

I have a pair of jeans, purchased when I was in sixth form (c. 1987) that still fit and are size 14! best pair of jeans I've ever owned but now worn only to do the garden

What's going on and how are you supposed to know what size to order?

Also, how do people who are actually small buy clothes?!

9st1 not 8s9!

Pertella · 17/10/2020 08:38

I'm 5'5" and 11 stone. I can wear size 10/12 tops and 12/14 trousers in most high st. places.

I do about 3-4 hours of pilates and interval training so I guess that I'm replacing fat with muscle that takes up less room 😆

KitMarlowesCodpiece · 17/10/2020 08:38

I think I'm very high density as I'm 5'7 and about 146lb and wear between an 8 and a 12, depending on the shop.

Poppyolive thanks I'll have a look! My last hail of three came from H&M and the fit brilliantly. I don't tend to buy online as I can never be arsed to send things back. Normally I pick everything up second hand but it's just bloody jeans that are so hard to find!

caughtalightsneeze · 17/10/2020 08:42

When I was a teenager, 30 years ago, I was very slim but had big boobs. I weighed maybe 8 stone. I regularly had to buy size 18 clothes for my top half, and on one occasion I remember crying because I had to buy a size 20. All these years later, I am four stone heavier and fit in a size 14.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 17/10/2020 08:44

I'm 5'7" and ~70 kg and I'm a neat size 12. But I lift weights. I'm trying to lose some weight and tone up again so I'll be heading back down to 65 kg which will put me at a 10-12, but I bet I'll be able to get the odd 8 in places like Next!

justanotherneighinparadise · 17/10/2020 08:44

At 5ft 7 and 10 stone I’m very slim bordering on thin. Currently one stone more than that and a size 10/12.

LadyFannyButton · 17/10/2020 08:45

What's going on

Vanity sizing.
I have a size 12 dress from 2 decades ago that I couldn’t part with. It still fits just as it did in my 20’s but I’m now apparently a size 8 🙄

Toddlerteaplease · 17/10/2020 08:45

I'm 5"7 and 13 at 10. Size 14. Not entirely sure where the weight is as I'm Curvy but not obese as my BMI tells me I am. Hmm

Graciebobcat · 17/10/2020 08:48

I'll be a size 10 at 11 stone and 5'7". I don't need to be any slimmer or lighter than that at 45 years old.

At my lightest in the late 90s/early 00s I was a small 8, so some shops wouldn't have anything that fit properly, now at that size I'd probably be a 4/6.

Dress sizes really don't matter though, it's about being fit and healthy. I feel fit and healthy at size 14 but also know that having less weight on me will be a lot less pressure on my joints and organs.

Sarahandduck18 · 17/10/2020 08:49

It’s not just the sizes it’s what people wear and how they wear them.

Eg I got different sizes with a good bra underneath and 1or 2 sizes smaller if I wear spanx or similar.

My DM is the same height as me but thinks she’s a bigger size as she wears her clothes looser on her body but with less Lycra. Eg my leggings vs her jeans. People who wear Lycra can wear much smaller sizes despite being bigger than the linen/satin wearers.

passthemustard · 17/10/2020 08:57

5'7 and 10 stone is not big though.

I'm 5'6 and at 10 stone I'd expect to be a size 10.

I'm usually between 9 and 9.5 and would wear an 8.

I do think sizing has changed though. I'm sure as a teen size 4s didn't even exist in the shops (in the 90s)

Jammymare · 17/10/2020 09:07

It’s definitely vanity sizing. 5’7 and 11 stone here, always been a size 10 bottoms (big boobs) but weight has crept up from 10 stone to 11 stone after I turned 30.
I have an ancient pair of fat face shorts that were getting quite snug so bought myself a new pair last summer in size 12. They are massive compared to the old ones. The waist band is 4.5” bigger It’s ridiculous. To the extent the OH asked why I’d bought maternity clothes

UserABCDE12345 · 17/10/2020 09:28

I'm that height and 10 st 7 and a size 10. The odd thing feels a bit tight now but most of my clothes still fit. I still look slim and the more of my fat I'm turning to muscle, the heavier I'm getting but slimmer I'm looking Confused.

hamstersarse · 17/10/2020 09:35

I’m 5’6 and just under 9 stone

I wear an 8-10 depending on shop

My theory is at that size of 8-10 it is quite consistent but once you go above 10 it’s a wild guess as to the sizing. True vanity sizing happens here

Fabuleuse · 17/10/2020 09:47

The only thing I have from White Stuff is a skirt which is a size 10. I am very much not a size 10 anywhere else. 5'9" and hover around 11 stone, size 12-14.

Mrsemcgregor · 17/10/2020 10:02

This is so weird. I am 5’8” and 10st 3lb which must be a similar build and BMI. Yet I wear a 12 from places like M&S and a 14 (at least) from anywhere more trendy like River Island etc

My waist is 29 inches and my hips 41 inches.

PaperMonster · 17/10/2020 10:12

I was a size 12 25 years ago and I remember buying some work trousers which I loved, but I was horrified because I could only fit in a size 16. Since then I’ve been a 14 and a 16 and those trousers didn’t fit - but these past few years I’ve been a size 12. Those size 16 trousers fit. But so do the size 12s I still have from 25 years ago. I just think dodgy sizing has always been around, nothing to do with vanity sizing!

dhisreadingmypostsagain · 17/10/2020 10:19

The sizing is so random, I have from size 6-12 in my wardrobe from various brands.

My gym leggings range from XXS to medium as well.

It drives me spare I always have to order 2-3 sizes to try online, which just costs short term.

mysticpistachio · 17/10/2020 10:34

I'm 5ft 8. At 10 stone I'm super skinny.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/10/2020 10:39

@TenOclock I'm the same, 5'7, 10.0, size 8. I also run a lot, I've got very low body fat and I'm muscular. I don't think I'm skinny at all, I'm just lean. I really struggle with tops, particularly vest tops, and I don't think I'm especially small framed, but they gape and drape all over. I do have A very shallow, wide bust though, which I think doesn't help. Buying bras is an absolute nightmare and I now only buy non wired now because anything wired just digs into my ribs constantly.
It's absolutely vanity sizing though, I have vintage items from the 80's that are size 14 and too small. Particularly skirts, the waists are tiny.

I agree with @Thedogshow, different brands have a different audience and shape. Joules, sea salt, fat face size 8 are huge. River island, miss Selfridge, tiny. I find jack wills and hollister size 8 fits me well, longer body but small chest/ narrow armpit/shoulder measurement I suppose.
