I'm not fat but I'm hardly a dainty little bird of a thing.

I've just received a size 8 dress from White Stuff, having sent the 10 back because it was far too big. It's still too big!

I have a pair of jeans, purchased when I was in sixth form (c. 1987) that still fit and are size 14! best pair of jeans I've ever owned but now worn only to do the garden

What's going on and how are you supposed to know what size to order?

Also, how do people who are actually small buy clothes?!

I’m 5ft 7 and 10 stone is my absolute happy-weight - I’m a size 8/10 if I’m there.

So I’m envious as I’m more than a couple of stone from that at the moment!

You’re right re sizing though. I’m still getting into some small/10s and at the same time 14s from other shops aren’t exactly roomy! Sizing is a nightmare.

refriedbeanstalk · 16/10/2020 23:17

Same height and weight and size 14 😫 it's not fair

In some shops I do buy a 14! Especially anything fitted on the hips, although not so much recently, everywhere seems to be getting bigger.

I run 50m per week, so my body fat is low for the weight.

I'm the same height and used to be this weight 2 years ago I was a size 14 and unhappy with my body. I'm now 2 stone heavier still a 14 and even more unhappy with my bodySad.

GlamGiraffe · 16/10/2020 23:24

I am small (as in thin). Its really hard to get things to fit. You know there are brands you can buy from and brands you cant. Im 5ft8.5 and have now gone up to 53kgs which us the heaviest I've ever been outside being pregnant. Im a size 6 to 8. My whole family is very slight anyway so we all struggle equally. There is no consensus of sizing at all in shops and a lot if smaller clothes come from "stretchy" brands. You just have to get really good at knowing which styles you can wear and where sells things that will fit you. Its annoying!
Im in my mid 40s and dress in a pretty classic clothes style that hasnt changed massively thtougout my adult life. Im in my mid 40s and clothes are definitely cut much bigger now for similar items than they used to be . An old size 8 is much smaller than a new size 8 so now I have to buy a 6. This makes the whole thing even harder.

I'm 5'7" and weigh about 9st 11. I am a size 12. I'm struggling to believe that someone the same height as me who weighs more is a size 8.

CourageCallsToCourage · 16/10/2020 23:37

I'm also 5'7 and around 11st 6, and I'm a loose-ish size 14 (in bottoms. 12 in tops). It varies so wildly depending on your build I think. When I was 9st 6 I was still only barely squeezing into a 10 bottoms.

Can't relate to your particular fitting issue though, I have to say!

RayCurious · 16/10/2020 23:40

At 5'7 and 10 10lbs I'm a Size 12. I think at 10 stone I would be Size 10.
People carrying weight differently/ weighing heavy or light is a thing.

I can never believe it in weight loss features magazines how little the people tend to weigh in their "after" photos. They can be 5'7 and 9 stone 11 and a healthy, even curvy, Size 12 who say they still have a few pound to lose, (like PP) whereas I would be very thin at that weight.

Belfastian · 16/10/2020 23:43

I am 5ft 7 and 61kg. I wear a size 8 or a 10 generally but it is almost item dependent sometimes . I'm returning a size 10 dress tomorrow that is too tight on the top, far too loose on the waist - I can wear anything from a 6-12 depending on the item in that particular store alone. Mind boggling

Chickydoo · 16/10/2020 23:44

5'7" weigh 8st 7lbs have been this weight all my adult life. Size 8-10

StillMedusa · 17/10/2020 00:25

5 ft 7 and 8 stone 10.. size 10 .

Depends on a person's shape and muscle / bone density or fat percentage . Also style of clothing .

A pear shape with narrow shoulders and small boobs could get into a swing or skater style dress a couple of sizes smaller than someone the same height and weight who was broad shouldered. Likewise if they are pear shaped they may need jeans a couple of sizes larger than an apple shape .

Youngatheart00 · 17/10/2020 08:12

@Ginfordinner I’m the PP who said that - I know it sounds unusual, as 10 stone still seems a lot when I say it out loud, but I genuinely was as slim / slimmer than slightly shorter friends who were 8.5 stone. I was running a lot, and young (early 30s!) good metabolism, good muscle tone, ahh those were the days.

fatisnotafeeling · 17/10/2020 08:19

I'm 5ft 7lb and 12st 11lb I've just had a baby, I am a size 16 apparently and I ordered some dresses yesterday and they were too tight 16 I refuse to believe I am an 18.

6 yrs ago after DS1 I was 14stone and never went past a 14. Sizes just don't make sense to me.

FairFriday · 17/10/2020 08:22

Sizes have gone up - me old usual Wright was about 8:5 stone and I am packing an extra 1:5 stones now. I would buy a size 8 back in the day and I still pick up an 8 in some stores.

The sizes are random!

MsTSwift · 17/10/2020 08:23

Similar height was 11 st 9 size 14 last Oct took 4 months now 9 st 9 size 10. Assumed I was a 12 but size 12 too big

LunaNorth · 17/10/2020 08:25

Humblebrag?

Bagelsandbrie · 17/10/2020 08:26

I’m 5ft 7 and 13 stone and I’m a 14-18 depending what I buy where. Clothes sizing is ridiculous now. Even in the same shop I can be a 14 in one pair of jeans and I can’t even get an 18 over my knees!

Hangingover · 17/10/2020 08:27

Jeans are the worst, the illusive size 8/long does not seem to exist in shops, the long only seems to be an opinion from size 12 upwards...unless they only order in a few and they get snapped up right away, tbf whenever I find some I buy three pairs! (5'10/8st9)

Poppyolive90 · 17/10/2020 08:28

I’ve always been super heavy for my size. I’m 5ft 8 and 12 st 7 but a 10 (occasionally a 12, even sometimes an 8) in all the usual high street shops (Topshop, Zara, H&M and ASOS are my most regular buys). I’ve been as low as 8 stone and was then more of a size 8 but I think I’d mainly lost muscle mass. I do weight training 3-4 times a week so I think that influences it.

Thedogshow · 17/10/2020 08:29

At same weight and height I’m a 10-12 in most places. 12 in ‘younger’ brands, but 10 is generous in places like M&S. Fatface is really only worn by people in late 30s-60s, so is probably quite generous sizes.
It seems to vary hugely according to the brand.

Poppyolive90 · 17/10/2020 08:30

hangingover topshop for jeans always! They do 34 and 36 inch leg and start from a 24 inch waist. They’re usually true to size. Also ASOS but I don’t like their jeans as much

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 17/10/2020 08:32

I'm the same height and weight and wear size 8-10. Think it probably is vanity sizing though, as I got married in 2008 and weighed 7lb more than I do now, and my wedding dress was a (dressmakers) size 14. It did have to be taken in at the waist though.

doctorhamster · 17/10/2020 08:32

To further demonstrate how bonkers sizes are these days; when I got married 15 years ago I weighed 13st 5lbs and I was size 16 (I'm 5ft 6). Fast forward 15 years and I weigh 17 stone Blush and I'm sitting here in a pair of size 18 jeans. I've gained almost four stone and only gone up one dress size.

bonzo77 · 17/10/2020 08:34

Totally vanity sizing. I’ve got a size 14 marks and Spencer jumper bought probably around 1986. It’s definitely closer to a current size 8.
