We've polished off our hotel breakfasts, flocked to the beaches and eaten out to help out with Rishi. Now the D-Day style floatilla of Anti-Dementor boats weather the stormy seas of tiers 1, 2 and 3 and support each other through the calls for lockdown.

Hold on tight and get those bouyancy aids on...

@TheOrchidKiller ... you're right they did say on HIGNFY last night that only one person had been traced...

Bollss · 17/10/2020 09:31

Well I've just been essentially bullied off a thread about schools. Wow.

TheOrchidKiller · 17/10/2020 09:38

@GrrrrrrArghhhhh oh thank you! It seemed so bad that I thought I'd been dreaming - I've had some weird stress dreams.

Why is it being touted as the most amazing app if it's so crap?

Why is it's crapness not being shouted about more? Is it because when something is so spectacularly bad we all now just shrug & go, "yeah, no surprise there then"?

Orangeblossom7777 · 17/10/2020 10:19

Don't go on school threads they are a nightmare. Thought you might like this article

www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/comment/backing-lockdown-isnt-proof-of-caring-more-jcrfwjcs7

Backing lockdown isn’t proof of caring more
Starmer’s sudden embrace of a national circuit break against Covid ignores the plight of the poor, the elderly and lonely

Orangeblossom7777 · 17/10/2020 10:21

"National consensus on the pandemic ended with lockdown and has since become another front in the culture war. The left now portrays those balking at stricter measures as right wing, Brexit-backing, mask-spurning thickos who’d kill your granny for a pint. Whereas to advocate lockdown proves you want to hold the NHS and “the vulnerable” in a warm, protective hug"

Likewise, the government’s scientific advisers look only at the virus and how to stop it spreading. Other facets of life are not within their purview and, like the surgeon, they can’t even promise their idea works.

"So eight months into this pandemic, let’s stop pretending that the stricter the lockdown you advocate, the more you care."

Recycledblonde · 17/10/2020 10:51

I work for the NHS, was frontline during the height of the virus in April and I did not and do not support lockdown or aggressive social distancing. I’m also definitely left of centre.
We have been told at work that any comments made on social media where people know what we do, should support, or at least not challenge, the NHS England guidelines. So effectively we have to be publicly pro mask wearing and social distancing. Any photos we post must appear to be socially distanced.😡😡It makes me so cross although my SM is mostly pictures of my dogs.
I would imagine this is true of most people who work for the NHS.

Recycledblonde · 17/10/2020 10:55

This is possibly why the media is generally so doom and gloom.

ADs self isolate in a fridge Boris style
Aztectrousers · 17/10/2020 11:03

Well that explains it all Recycledblond. What happened to freedom of speech? Is this a dictatorship we are living in?
This is one of my main bugbears that there is no alternative perspective and that all the information is one sided and any challenge to the official view is ignored.

Reedwarbler · 17/10/2020 11:22

Yes indeed, what has happened to freedom of speech? This party line following is almost more frightening than covid. However, I live in hope that once someone of note breaks rank perhaps the tide will turn.

ISaySteadyOn · 17/10/2020 11:47

I hope that's true. And, @Recycledblonde, that picture is chilling.

Littlebelina · 17/10/2020 12:22

@TrustTheGeneGenie

Well I've just been essentially bullied off a thread about schools. Wow.
Well done for persevering with the school threads, I usually look at them, see who is posting and think what is the fucking point. Although the current one about the unions made me laugh as someone was claiming that more and more people were agreeing with them. Nope, the school threads are so much of a bullying echo chamber where you can't express an alternative view without being accused of teachers bashing or being a member of us4them that I suspect most people just don't bother. I just lurk occasionally and have decided it's better for my mental health not to get involved. Trouble is it bleeding into other threads as well.
Bollss · 17/10/2020 12:33

I know, in hindsight I wish I'd not even read it!! It totally is an echo chamber you're right.

ISaySteadyOn · 17/10/2020 12:36

I joined us4them. I don't think I am a complete loon. Maybe half of one. It seems odd that a group of parents concerned for their children has become an insult.

Maybe their Facebook page has weirder posters than their website; I don't have Facebook so I don't know.

I am sorry you were bullied off the thread @TrustTheGeneGenie. I imagine you said something extremely sensible that they couldn't handle.

Aztectrousers · 17/10/2020 12:45

I should not read any other Covid threads on here. I can’t seem to help myself though as I want to see if the tide is turning. There’s a thread about couples who don’t live together seeing each other which started out quite well but has turned into a proper bun fight.
What is happening to people?

Littlebelina · 17/10/2020 12:52

(Although having just said that someone did post something about data we should be collecting in schools in the data thread that I do agree with so not against schools discussion full stop just dislike certain threads/speculation/misinterpretation of data and science I see frequently)

Curlygirl06 · 17/10/2020 12:56

@justasking111

Omg just got this from licencing!! Getting silly now We have been asked by the track and trace team to ensure that you all have your mandatory track and trace recording system in place and not just the NHS covid tracker app. Every premises must be keeping their own daily records. Thanks,
Don't know if it's the same at our place (supermarket) but we've been told if we want to use the staff dining room we either have to scan the app, which I won't have, or write our names and times in and out on a piece of paper. If you don't do either you aren't allowed in.

I pointed out lots of jobs were just as hard as teaching and said I didn't support a closure and that its a small minority of teachers giving teachers a bad name and most of them like children and want to teach. Of course they took it personally.... Well if the shoe fits I guess.
DisgruntledGuineaPig · 17/10/2020 13:01

This weekend does have a "last hurrah" feel about it - DC1 has a couple of parties to go to (basically richer parents have booked outdoor sporting things that are allowed to go ahead), but I'm not sure we won't be in lockdown for half term.

I hate that covid is the only thing that seems to matter, there are much bigger problems for the bulk of the population, the only way covid is a problem is the restrictions on you if you get a positive result.

We have not been actively avoiding catching covid for a long time, we are more actively trying to keep out of isolation, which is a very different mind set.

Reading the schools and covid threads, it does seem something has changed, most people fear the restrictions, not the virus.

Bollss · 17/10/2020 13:02

Same, not against discussion at all, but discussion isn't allowed where some posters are concerned. They don't like people who don't agree with them.
Willow2017 · 17/10/2020 13:03

And the fact that you are working beside people and customers all day without being tracked constantly is irrelevant? I do not go to the canteen with any of the people I work with, within inches of each other, as we all get seperate breaks! I could catch it from any one of them and not know it and if they dont know they have it how will I ever know who I got it from?
I dont have the app nor will I get it to work on my phone so they can sod off if they try that in my work, they will just get bits of paper to deal with. I am sure the office is loving all the extra work they have to do storing all these hundreds of bits of paper a day then throwing them out in 2 weeks time!

BlusteryShowers · 17/10/2020 13:03

@Aztectrousers I get what you mean. Back in March I had to delete the app altogether for a while due to the horrible tone of all the threads, and I've been on Mumsnet for about 12 years.

I've always liked it for the variety of discussion but there seemed to be no "normal" threads at that time. It's a little better at the moment but I'll stop using the app again if it starts going the same way.

TheOrchidKiller · 17/10/2020 13:12

@Curlygirl06
I hope they provide you with another space at work to have a break & something to eat, then.

If they do, do they make you sign in to use that space? Because if not, what's the difference between eating your lunch say in a staff room & a canteen? Utter nuts!

justasking111 · 17/10/2020 13:26

OH gone full on dementor, walked the dogs in the hills this morning now gone for a bike ride, worried about passing people en route. Now I know he has had pre op assessment so is waiting for this mythical unicorn op which the assembly member has fought hard for, think the lockdown now this Friday will knock that out of the park.

He asked me as he put on his rucksack, where are you going, no idea I said. Well I am going to an outdoor artisan market but did not tell him because he would not approve. In actual fact the nurse at the pre op said it would be better if I was not around while he was isolating pre op. Well fuck that I am not moving out, where would I go anyway.

justasking111 · 17/10/2020 13:29

OH has also voiced concerns about halloween party for grand kids at our house until Friday under 11 children do not count but DIL said better bring it forward to this week. OH said oh that is breaking the rules, no it fucking is not until Friday at least.

Do you know, I've not thought of that! There wasn't any other option mentioned, and to be fair, there only is the dining room, unless you sit in the ladies cloakroom. Technically we're not supposed to take hot drinks out of there (management do but hey, they're management!)
Willow2017 I agree, I'm serving a million customers a day, I don't know if they have anything. Fair enough we've got screens and gloves etc and usually customers aren't at my till for 15 minutes plus but I'm standing near other staff. Social distancing is applied as best we can but sometimes it's not possible, for example if the supervisor has to sort something out or put some change in. It might not be for 15 minutes but cumulatively over a shift it could be?
My advice to everyone is don't lick the staff or the shopping, you'll be grand!
