Why isn't he more celebrated. An incredible achievement, 91 wins, equalling MS and it's so low key on the news?

I prefer LH to Schumacher but really can't get that excited about someone driving a car well. Other drivers and riders seem nicer and more down to earth, and more particularly outside F1.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/10/2020 11:32

Hulkenbergs just never had the car he needs. Massive talent.

Norris is very good. I can see Albon going. That cars set up for verstappens driving style & it just doesn’t seem to suit him this year.

Mrsjayy · 12/10/2020 12:31

I just read his stevenage comment i think that was Lewis's im "gangsta" phase wasnt it silly boy.

Jacques Villeneuve swoon

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/10/2020 17:40

Irvine was easy on the eye too. Not dh material though. Hard dog to keep on the porch by all accounts.

senua · 12/10/2020 18:01

They just go round and round the track. BORING
if you try and second guess strategies, team orders, tyre hardness and think about it strategically then it's much more than cars going round a track.

Yeah but the behind-the-scenes are precisely that - behind the scenes. All I can see, as an uninterested spectator, is cars going round and round in circles. It is quite boring, it does not engage the general masses in the way that football, rugby, tennis, etc can. It is too much about the equipment and not enough about human endeavour.

I expect that there will be more fanfare when he beats Schumacher's record. They only tried to make it A Thing this w/e because it was on MS's home turf.

ABCDay · 12/10/2020 18:06

I can't forget him intentionally spraying a race hostess in the face with champagne a few years ago. Why would he do that if he wasn't a dick?

Mrsjayy · 12/10/2020 18:40

I think its "banter" @ABCDay Hmm

Bluntness100 · 12/10/2020 18:45

Years ago it was all about the driver, now it’s about the car, it’s just short of remote control.

In addition people like Schumacher, senna etc were very charismatic and good with the media. Hamilton dresses up in designer fashion that makes him look a tad ridiculous and likes to be controversial. It doesn’t give the same popularity.

In real life I know someone who knows him, as he was becoming big he was very humble, shocked at delighted at things like free chocolates in his hotel room. Saving them for his brother etc. Now apparantly he is very entitled and not very pleasant.

He believed his own hype.

I'm definately not trying to be argumentative but I will just submit for your consideration Jackie Stewart - who also had the same thing said about him Grin

Jackie Stewart look at him mr catalogue man Grin

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/10/2020 19:21

Style can be inversely proportional to income though.

Watch any royal wedding.

Bluntness100 · 12/10/2020 19:58

Two wrongs don’t make a right,,,😂

Mrsjayy · 12/10/2020 20:00

I met Jackie Stewart at "something " i was about 9 so can't remember what it was but have his autograph cant recall a red leather number though!

MakeAPeaCry · 12/10/2020 20:38

Is anyone else looking at the photo and thinking "why did the man who campaigned so tirelessly for more safety in the car wear something that looks so dangerously flammable and melty?" Smile

Mrsjayy · 12/10/2020 20:41

HA ! Melty Grin

To be fair he was never going to be able to compete with James Hunt - he was best covered up.
ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 12/10/2020 20:55

He really isn’t the right fit for an F1 driver for many

He isn’t from a particularly wealthy background so some perceive him as having no class It always mentioned that he is tacky or his dress sense 🙄

From when he first became internationally famous this was addressed and that he spoke out about racism which of course he was meant to shut up and put up with because he was earning so much Hmm

It’s an absolutely fantastic achievement and he should be celebrated for his achievements

And criticised for avoiding tax

Bouncycastle12 · 12/10/2020 20:58

Tax avoidance... much easier to talk about equality than, you know, pay for it.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 12/10/2020 21:01

Love F1, Cant Stand LH, He is an absolute tool!

Bouncycastle12 · 12/10/2020 21:04

Also I used to find F1 quite interesting, but I’m not at all engaged with it now. Don’t honestly know what changed... LH skill genuinely impressive - obvs - but just find the whole sport v tedious.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/10/2020 21:38

Leclerc fits the F1 driver stereotype though, as does Rosberg.

Sarahlou63 · 12/10/2020 21:54

Michael Schumacher adopted a stray dog in Brazil and hijacked a taxi.

(news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/7139910.stm)

Lewis Hamilton wears diamonds earstuds.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 12/10/2020 21:57

@AnyFucker

Because motor racing is really fucking boring and Lewis Hamilton is one smug prick

Next question

Spot on, plus the tax avoidance.

I'm not going to celebrate the achievements of a man who goes as far out of his way to avoid paying taxes as that little shit does.

Brogues · 12/10/2020 21:58

In the 90s and before there were just so many charismatic drivers even those who weren’t always winners we remember the names of not just the top dogs. I think a lot of people have just fallen out of love with F1 and ergo the drivers too.
