At what age do kids wipe their own bums?

DS is 3 and started school nursery a couple of weeks ago and he's always coming home in streaked underwear when he's had a poo at school. He does try to wipe his own bum but hasn't quite mastered getting fully clean, I was assuming this was normal for 3/4 but maybe not?

It’s one of those things that it’s hard to let them do themselves as you know at first they’re unlikely to do it properly, yet if you don’t let them then they can’t ever get good at it. Sometimes kids at nursery say they don’t need help and it can be tricky to insist if they aren’t keen.

Yeah there's definitely an element of him not saying he needs help and I understand the teacher/ratio is a lot higher than his previous nursery.

We'll just have to keep practicing with him but his arms don't reach all that well really and nursery teacher said she wouldn't clean him like I would so what the answer is I don't know!

I often still check for my 7yo.

Especially if it's in the morning before school or after bath/before bed.

Generally though a good job has been done but nice to be sure.
