Help! How to unblock a toilet when ..

Blownaway22 · 29/09/2020 20:03

... multiple buckets of water poured from a height and toilet flushed doesn’t work? Nothing within poking distance or reach to push out or shove along.

All suggestions gratefully received!

Thanks!

You can make a mushroomy plunger with a black bin bad and air.

trunumber · 29/09/2020 20:35

Hot water or a coat hanger to break it up

QforCucumber · 29/09/2020 20:36

I read on here to pour washing powder down and leave as long as possible. Seems to break it down. Bloody amazing!

Blownaway22 · 29/09/2020 20:36

Wow! Thank you! Starting at the top and working down. Sadly have neither mop nor plunger but DH is away with a 2 litre bottle of water to make a start.

I imagine it’s blocked with a lot of toilet paper complements of a child 🙄

Try this tip I found on YouTube once. I've done it twice and it's worked. You just take your normal toilets brush and turn it into a plunger by wrapping a carrier bag around the brush end tightly. Just plunge and flush at the same time. You'll need some gloves for afterwards to remove and dispose of the bag.

mxjones · 29/09/2020 20:37

You need an old metal coat hanger which you can undo and use.

MrsMcMuffins · 29/09/2020 20:38

Blocked toilets is always when I miss living near my dad the most even though I am nearly 50Grin

Coat hanger and lots of bleach usually works here.

Plussizejumpsuit · 29/09/2020 20:40

Drain snake. From b and q or screwfix.

Lordamighty · 29/09/2020 20:41

Caustic soda.

booandbumpp · 29/09/2020 20:42

A lot of fairy liquid leave for 15 minutes then a kettle of boiled water leave for 5 minutes then Flush!

fibeee · 29/09/2020 20:43

Pouring down a kettle of freshly boiled water does the trick. Just be careful!

MiddleClassProblem · 29/09/2020 20:45

Wire coat hanger?

danni0509 · 29/09/2020 20:46

Toilet brush as a plunger. Plunge the life out of it. When you’ve done that plunge some more 😂 never failed to unblock a toilet doing it.

Mine block all the time, like weekly basis. thanks to ds using full bog rolls for the fun of it and also some sort of shit drainage system. New build houses all along have the same issue with toilets blocking.

Fred578 · 29/09/2020 20:48

You need a poo knife

NicholasTopliss · 29/09/2020 20:50

If it is poo, biological washing powder left in there for 30 minutes will break it down. Just put a scoopful in, add a kettleful of hot water. Go back and flush it later.
Toilet paper should just break up.
DS once blocked the loo spectacularly by using kitchen towel instead of loo roll.

Mummyworriestoomuch · 29/09/2020 20:59

Put your mop in a binbag and tape up and use as a plunger

Cattermole · 29/09/2020 21:09

Our plumber who is lovely said if you're stuck, put your arm in a black bin liner, clench your fist, and pump your fist to and fro in the U bend. Then when you take your hand out, having cleared the iceberg, you keep hold of the bottom of the bag so the bin liner turns inside out, sealing the, um, "contents" inside.

Serengetiqueen · 29/09/2020 21:09

Rubber gloves and bucket. Pull out excess bog roll. Chuck excess water in the basin. Try a bent coat hanger down the hole, hook it out and chop it in half. Tried and tested. Works every time. Though you do feel like you need to soap up and shower afterwards.

afromom · 29/09/2020 21:17

Someone has already said it, but carrier bag wrapped around a toilet brush to use as a plunger. Pump up and down as far as it will go. It works every time in our house, which is needed a lot as DS regularly blocks the toilet!

Northernsoullover · 29/09/2020 21:20

I had to unblock my toilet once and like pps have suggested dish soap (Fairy) and warm water did the trick! Not boiling. I've heard it can crack the porcelain. I don't know if thats an urban myth but I did fancy trying it!

Blownaway22 · 29/09/2020 22:45

Thanks all! The Mumsnet trick of the bucket of water has worked every time until tonight. DH finally got it unblocked by using a bundle of cleaning rags as a makeshift plunger. Thank heavens he was around, I’d have given up until the morning!

Will be trying the washing powder trick tomorrow - actually, will need to buy bio powder. One child does the heaviest, stickiest poos that glue to the toilet bowl and will not budge so hope the washing powder will do the trick.

Thanks again!

This always works for me for people watching:
Get a wire coat hanger & undo it so it's really long.

Poke one end into the fetid water. In your head visualise the U bend , & push your coat hanger end as far as you can into the bend.
Wiggle.
Wiggle some more.
Wiggle.
Wiggle some more.
Repeat.

It takes time.
And wiggling.

But at some point, it's like magic and it just disappears. (If you are sensitive, don't look at the poo soup you are creating.)

If it doesn't, pour in a bit of bleach.then a few hours later repeat the the wiggle.

You can then go either rinse coat hanger wire & store for next time, or put in wheely bin.

Its not a myth! The DF have cracked 2 toilets, one with boiling water and one by using it as a stepladder.
mne13 · 29/09/2020 23:14

I used soda crystals & a bit of washing up liquid then a kettle full of boiling water - worked for me before

CurlyStrawsRock · 29/09/2020 23:27

Plunger every time!
