Autumn 🍁🍂

The cooler weather has finally arrived! I'm in the south and it's been very warm, verging on hot, for weeks now with hardly any rain. I try not to complain (much!) but I find the heat hard going. Last night I awoke to rain on the window and it feels gloriously fresh this morning.

I love this time of year. Still light in the evenings but not hot and sweaty and the cool nights are wonderful for sleeping.

Time to dust off my boots and jumpers and plan some casseroles Smile

Anyone else love Autumn?

Me! I LOVE autumn so much, its my favourite season. I live rurally and it's so beautiful here, the vivid reds and yellows of the leaves on the trees, the misty mornings, the sun is lower and it creates a gorgeous hue on the countryside when I walk my dogs in the woods, the light this time of year is really unique. I love Halloween as well and the excitement of Christmas looming.

I am bored of the constant heat of the endless summer we have just had, I can't wait to light the fire and get my blankets out and get all hygge. And to wrap up and go on long dog walks and sit in cosy pubs and drink red wine! I just love the atmosphere of autumn Smile

BashfulClam · 23/09/2020 16:51

I love Autumn, Scotland is beautiful at this time. I am noticing the darkness coming earlier and earlier though. After the summer where we get just a few hours of real darkness it’s real contrast.

haba · 23/09/2020 16:57

Mmm red and yellow leaves, thick woollen jumpers, scarves, hats, wooly tights and corduroy dresses, apple and plum crumbles, casseroles and stews, woodsmoke smell.
I like autumn very much. I didn't used to, as I hated the nights being darrk, but dark evenings seem cosy to me now.

TweetUsOnFacebook · 23/09/2020 20:02

Candle lit tonight and bake off on! It's going to be a high temp of 13 degrees tomorrow Shock

Now till Christmas is my favourite time of year too. Except this year is going to be shite. At least it's cosy shite though I guess.

badger2005 · 24/09/2020 09:53

Guys, please just keep talking!
I have loads of work to do, pretty stressed and headachey over it, and this talk of autumn is just making me feel a lot better - am looking at it in my break.
The lists of autumny things are lovely.

Do you know the school hymn/song about autumn? Or any good autumn poems?

InterstellarDrifter · 24/09/2020 10:16

Inspired by your request @badger2005, I went on a quest and discovered these wonderful pictures and poems
www.oprahmag.com/entertainment/g33312858/autumn-poems/

Yesterday, I made my first ‘autumnal’ soup - leek, parsnip, garlic and thyme - and dd baked a carrot cake so it felt very cosy.

I like to find books that are based in Autumn and winter too. I’m on a quest now to find a good book and get a list of easy casserole and stew recipes. The kind that I can just put in a pot and let it cook slowly over a couple of hours.

Zenithbear · 24/09/2020 10:22

I love Autumn, especially when we have had good weather in spring and a long summer. Autumn feels like a nice change.

TweetUsOnFacebook · 24/09/2020 13:01

My dc used to sing Cauliflowers Fluffy at Harvest Assembly. We still sing it when we have cauliflower Grin

badger2005 · 24/09/2020 13:48

Oh yes - that's a lovely hymn! I think my dd's school normally sings it for harvest.

There's also a song we used to sing at school - 'jet planes meeting in the air to be refueled...' I love that song!

Great poems - thank you InterstellarDrifter

Do any of you run? I am recovering from an injury, so all running is short and slow, but I love that feeling of going out in the cold, fresh air ... or maybe actually it's coming in from the cold that I like... what about you? I like it when people come in from outside with cold cheeks, and bringing a fresh outside smell with them.

TweetUsOnFacebook · 25/09/2020 13:59

I don't run but I love a walk in the cold, coming back into the warm and having a hot drink. Not too cold though! This morning was perfect. It's going down to 8 degrees overnight here. Might be time to crack out the hot water bottles Smile

Horrible. Damp, cold, dark early. Back to school runs. Having to wear frumpy jumpers and socks to avoid freezing to death. It's crapness is only beaten by winter. Roll on summer, that is if we actually get one next year. I think that's partly why I loathe autumn and winter because we don't get decent summers to break up the grey and rain. If we had a few solid months of warm weather each year to build up vitamin D and happiness I might be able to suck up the rest of the year. I think I'm built for a Mediterranean climate or something.

userxx · 25/09/2020 21:03

@DrCoconut You're a flip flop girl aren't you? God I hope next year is a scorcher ☀️🙏

CatBatCat · 25/09/2020 21:41

We go camping every year around the equinox whilst its still warm enough to overnight and all the colours of the trees are that beautiful red and yellow. It was wonderful driving through all the forests areas of Snowdonia last weekend. We now start hankering down for the winter. Preparing pickles, jams and storing harvests from the summer fruits. I'll bring out the blankets and freshen up the winter jumpers and coats before the temp really drops.

Mumtumwobble · 25/09/2020 22:00

I absolutely love autumn, it’s my favourite Season. I don’t like being hot (unless I’m on holiday next to a pool) and summer clothes are not my thing at all. I look terrible during summer and always feel I look much better once autumn arrives. I love the colours, weather, clothes, food - all of it.

PH03b3 · 26/09/2020 06:17

Really excited about autumn this year, it's the end of a shit year, yes next year might be equally shit but we're getting towards the end of this shit year. This year, I'm actually going to have time! Time to decorate for Christmas, to maybe even bake (can't say it'll be edible but baking nonetheless) and lots of lovely walks. We're going to be having a simple autumn (cheap!) but it'll be lovely to get back to basics. So excited about the colours of the outside and also my wardrobe for this season.

Zaphodsotherhead · 26/09/2020 10:19

I run, but I prefer running when it's warm - I struggle with what to wear running in the cold! It's cold when I set off (and I can't BEAR being cold) so I wear a running jacket, then by half way I'm too warm and have to tie it round my middle, then the dog sets off sniffing something (I run with her on a lead) and I have to stop and wait for her so I get cold again and put my jacket back on, then we come back up the hill for the final 1.5 miles and I get home sweating and steaming!

The leaves are gorgeous though. So many sloes like tiny little damsons in the hedge and the hawthorn and rose hips are glowing!

badger2005 · 30/09/2020 19:31

I'm hoping to go for an autumn walk this weekend - maybe Sunday as apparently it's going to be bucketing down on Saturday...

Not sure that anyone's descriptions of the loveliness of autumn has included rain... but I guess I like the smell just when it starts raining, and of course being inside when it's raining is lovely. Being outside when it's raining... maybe a light misty rain is nice...?

Milkshake7489 · 30/09/2020 20:00

This thread is so lovely, I feel cosy just reading it Grin

badger2005 · 02/10/2020 11:04

I was walking my daughter back from an activity yesterday evening, and saw a very good autumn moon - sort of hazy and yellow-ish if you know what I mean?

My heart and soul want to be out exploring (but stuck inside working)

Zaphodsotherhead · 02/10/2020 11:06

The recent gales have made it much more autumnal round here, and there are buckets of free windfalls outside many gates. Just that smell of newly fallen apples says 'autumn' to me.

JuiceyBetty · 02/10/2020 11:16

I have found my people! Going to go for a lovely autumn stomp round the park soon.

MJMG2015 · 02/10/2020 11:26

@badger2005

If it helps any, it's pouring here & the wind is cold. The leaves are refusing to change colour & the sky is grey.

I love autumn 🍂 but today is not one you're missing out on! (Not where I am in the SE anyway. Yellow warnings for rain and not even a vague hint of sunshine until at least Wednesday!! 80-95% rain right through. I risk my feet becoming webbed!!

Zaphodsotherhead · 02/10/2020 11:29

The lovely thing about autumn (and winter) rain isn't the being out in it though, it's the coming home and being able to take a warm shower, get changed and then sit indoors with a mug of something hot, all the lights on, and the wet darkness outside. It accentuates the Cosy.

It's hard to get cosy when the sun is shining outside.

badger2005 · 02/10/2020 11:48

Oh, you all seem to understand everything perfectly and know how magical autumn is!

I do want to be out even in the wet, and then come home all cold and happy, but thank you MJMG at least I'm not missing out on the perfect autumn day.

Right now I can hear the cars going by on the wet road, and that's quite a nice cosy sound to be inside to.
