We have 3 children aged 5.5 and under so all in car seats / boosters. We are managing, just, with a Corolla, but I'm not happy with the safety. We want a car that can fit them all properly plus room for a friend or gear if we go on holiday.

Top priorities are a super reliable workhorse of a car. Currently booked in to view
Tiguan Allspace
Touran
Tourneo Connect
SMax
Galaxy
Anything else we should consider??

Not myself but family member has Sharan and it's great, easy to drive, spacious, can tow a caravan easily,

BrieAndChilli · 02/09/2020 21:12

We have a Nissan Xtrail

stovetopespresso · 02/09/2020 21:14

volvo xc90 all te way. we had a Mercedes 4 wheel drive which was a bit crap and a Renault espace which was AWFUL. vivo was a stretch financially but has been great, 7 seats and room for the dog! but the kids are growing dammit and the smallish seats in the very back are going to cause arguments and they're getting a bit squashed in the back

BigGlasses · 02/09/2020 21:15

In the last 10 years we’ve had:

Fiat Ulysses - huge but rubbish. Would never buy a Fiat again

Citroen c4 grande Picasso. Really good, and affordable. Not got sliding back doors though which with the width, and kids opening the doors In car parks is a bad combination

Seat Alhambra. Very spacious, DH loves it, but it’s got too many gizmos for my liking

stovetopespresso · 02/09/2020 21:15

sorry for typos am tired Grin

Panticles · 02/09/2020 21:17

We had a Mazda 5 with sliding doors. It saw us through bucket and spade holidays, teenage lifts and university runs. It then went to a relative with 3 under 4. A reliable workhorse of a car.

Mrsbclinton · 02/09/2020 21:21

Ive had a ford galaxy in the past. They have 7 proper seats ( as opposed to the smaller pop up seats) they can be removed if you want to make the boot bigger which was really handy if you were going on holiday etc.

PossiblePoodleParent · 02/09/2020 21:23

I've had a Ford Galaxy for the last few years; it's a 2011 model and has never broken down. Comfortable to drive and very spacious. I chose this particular one for safety reasons: in many 7 seaters the back row of seats are right up against the back window - so if you have a rear end collision there's very little space between the impact site and DC's heads. But in my Galaxy, even with all the seats back as far as possible, there's still a good foot or more of space to act as a crumple zone.

PossiblePoodleParent · 02/09/2020 21:25

And it means you've actually got a boot for luggage - albeit a little one - even when the car is fully loaded! Some cars basically force you to choose between seven passengers, or five passengers and space to transport belongings etc. Because the boot is entirely filled by the last row of seats when you have them unfolded.

I’ve got a Discovery Sport. It’s the loveliest car I’ve ever had. Absolutely gorgeous to drive. Two pop up seats in the boot. Big enough for kids, can squeeze adults in. Cavernous boot when seats folded down. Very reliable and totally confident that it will cope anywhere.

sonypony · 02/09/2020 21:31

Toyota Estima!

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 02/09/2020 21:31

Hmm this is really interesting! Thanks. We hadn't considered a Mazda. And lots of votes for the Galaxy, I see.

Love our Sharan: solidly built, v easy to drive, back seats big enough for adults and boot still useable with all seats up.

Indoctro · 02/09/2020 21:35

Volvo XC90 for sure

DaffodilsAndDandelions · 02/09/2020 21:37

I drive a galaxy. 2005 model. It's great. As big as my partners transit when I take the seats out. I got two 8x4 sheets of plywood cut in half in it last week with all 7 seats and two high back boosters! It's done 110000 miles. All 7 seats comfortably fit grownups and there is loads of room in the foot wells for all the stuff going out with kids and the dog entail.

Mylifeisboring · 02/09/2020 21:38

How about a Vauxhall Zafira tourer, little bit longer than a Zafira so a bit more leg space for the back 2 seats.

BogRollBOGOF · 02/09/2020 21:40

I have a Zafira as my dinky small, girly car... DH has a Sharan Grin

We both wanted decent boot space. Pros of the Sharan is that I find the rear seats in the boot very comfortable, the disadvantage is that the driving position is vile for a short arse with tight calves and I cramp up within 40 ninutes.

The Zafira is short arse friendly and makes a good mum taxi. I have managed 2 stage 1 carseats in the rear, 3 HBBs in the centre (and a somewhat pregnant front passengerGrin ) my boot with rear seats is more limited than DH's but you could still get a stroller in there (not that I need to) I actually just wanted an estate car to shove scouts and their gear in but do appreciate the flexibility of the additional seats. They also enabled me to do social distancing before it was trendy when the DCs couldn't leave each other alone Wink

OhToBeASeahorse · 02/09/2020 21:46

We have a Skoda Kodiaq - I love it.

SparkyBlue · 02/09/2020 21:46

We have a Prius 7seater. We bought it in a hurry due to baby no 3 being due and our other car not fitting our 3 car seats but we have shocked ourselves and really actually like it now . It's very spacious and people are always surprised when they discover it's a 7 seater . Boring as fuck to be fair but an excellent car.

mollibu · 02/09/2020 21:50

Tiguan Allspace here 🙋🏻‍♀️

The best car I've ever had by far! The only issue is the seats are pretty much in the boot so with the 2 seats up the boot is tiny compared to a regular Tiguan.

So really depends on how much you'll use the 2 seats/boot to full capacity at the same time. Any questions just ask, I love my car Grin

FraterculaArctica · 02/09/2020 21:52

We have a Citroen C4 Grand Picasso and love it

Itsrainingnotmen · 02/09/2020 21:54

Have had many 7 seaters over the years... Zafira x 2, Chevrolet Captiva (favourite) Nissan Patrol. Currently swapping Grande Scenic for an 8 seater Mazda import..

Exactly this!
HappyAsASandboy · 02/09/2020 22:05

Two words - sliding doors.

Cara with 7 seats are wide. Sliding doors means you can get in/out more easily, and there's not that panic that the kids will orang the car in the next space.

I have had a Touran and a SEAT Alhambra/VW Sharan (same car). I liked both, but the larger boot on the Alhambra is helpful, and the sliding doors are life changing for me.

I dread having to change cars and possibly lose my sliding doors.

paranoiamumma · 02/09/2020 22:05

I had a c4grand 2014 model loved it , I carried 3teenagers 13-16 a 4yr old and a baby , it was fantastic spacious and reliable , I don't have it now cos some dope drove into the side of me , and we then decided to not get such a big car .
