52andblue · 25/08/2020 18:08

I just bought a Car part on ebay via Paypal £130

an hour later i get a text saying my account is blocked due to suspicious activity and please verify it.

It asks, name address, dob, mothers maiden name so I put all that in. then it asks card details inc CVC code.
I use a debit card.

How can i tell if this is genuine please?

Never ever give you details in prompted in that way if you’ve followed a link.

Did you log back into PayPal the usual way or did you follow a link?

Sounds suss to me

catanddogmake6 · 25/08/2020 18:10

Op, ring your bank now. They will say if them or block the account. Does sound very suspicious.

FallonsTeaRoom · 25/08/2020 18:21

Have you actually input this info? If so phone PayPal and your bank as a matter of urgency. The info is enough for someone to steal your financial identity.

52andblue · 25/08/2020 18:23

Didnt put any card details in

Log in to PayPal using a new browser and check your account that way.
Don't use any links from emails.

Ontheboardwalk · 25/08/2020 18:25

Yes please ring the fraud line number for your Bank (found on their website)

Brandaris · 25/08/2020 18:25

You sent a text with all that info in?! Call your bank and PayPal right now!

Ffsnosexallowed · 25/08/2020 18:25

Call your bank straight away.

RowboatsinDisguise · 25/08/2020 18:28

You’ve been had OP. Never would information like that be requested in that way. Especially not from a normal looking mobile number.

slashlover · 25/08/2020 18:28

That's info someone could use to access your bank account.

52andblue · 25/08/2020 18:33

queuing on bank line ...

its my debit card that is linked to my paypal
oh crap...

slashlover · 25/08/2020 18:35

Is there an option on your bank app to block a card? I would try that if possible while you wait.

Givemlala · 25/08/2020 18:37

You will never be asked to share info such as that via text, if it's by phone then always insist on some sort of reference so you can call the number you have for the bank yourself to ensure it's legit. Unfortunately there are some nasty people out there, also never send your maiden name, it's a common security question, along with your dob. Name and address is already with the seller and not too hard to find out.

52andblue · 25/08/2020 18:40

ive been holding bank line for 12 mins now - ooof

Somanysocks · 25/08/2020 18:44

It's dodgy, I had a similar text, delete it.

slashlover · 25/08/2020 18:45

Is it definitely the fraud helpline you've called?

DianaT1969 · 25/08/2020 18:50

Can you still log into PayPal while you are on hold and delete your payment methods under 'account'? Change your PayPal password too. Don't give any more details or verification codes away to anybody. Have you called the bank number fresh? Not from any link?

Cheetahfajita · 25/08/2020 18:54

Oh god, cancel it.

52andblue · 25/08/2020 19:08

Well I finally got through to my banks fraud team (after 35 mins) and they say: 'don't worry, you will just get a call in the next few days and dont give out any more details'

So i guess that's okay then?

OP posts:
52andblue · 25/08/2020 19:17

I've deleted my debit card from my Paypal account.
Trying to delete the bank account from it too

Who is the patron saint of lost causes?
I think I need to pray to them!
St Jude? Or St Anthony?

Glad you got it sorted OP. You have probably reminded other people of the dangers and might spare someone else the same thing.

Babyvibe · 26/08/2020 00:18

Seems like its all okay then.
Be really careful, don't trust anything that's not on their actual website. I was selling my phone and someone said they would buy it. They told me they had sent the money to PayPal and it would be transferred from PayPal to my account once I had entered tracking details of the parcel onto PayPal. Had an email sent to me from 'paypal' saying this, it looked so realistic I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't even question it. I emailed paypal just to check as the seller was being so pushy and I didnt feel comfortable not having the money first and they told me it was a scam, no money had been sent.
