I just bought a Car part on ebay via Paypal £130

an hour later i get a text saying my account is blocked due to suspicious activity and please verify it.

It asks, name address, dob, mothers maiden name so I put all that in. then it asks card details inc CVC code.
I use a debit card.

How can i tell if this is genuine please?

Has the payment you made come out? Only if you've now cancelled the account, it might not clear.

I get similar emails any just ignore them. It's probably coincidence you'd just used the account.

@Spidey66
it is pending but have called bank to check it will go through okay as i need it as it is a car part (car currently in garage)
NO sign of keys though. Grrr

Lesson learned.
The Paypal text I got was esp convincing.
Ds (15, ASD and a total expert on matters tech) said it was 'the best he's ever seen' and was rather kind about the fact i got part way through the process before I twigged, I thought.

St Anthony of Padua is the Patron Saint of the Lost.

It's a scam, I nearly got caught out by it and then realized it was a random mobile number. I followed the link but stopped before putting in my password. I changed it anyway as a precaution.

I should know better,I'm nearly fell for one before as well.

I regularly get texts and emails like this. Also phone-calls from Amazon Prime and Windows. It's easy for me to ignore them because I don't have Paypal, AP or Windows.

But they are v plausible, if you're not on your guard. If it's something I do have, like a bank account, insurance or whatever, I always say, 'thank you for informing me. I'll ring you back'. And then use the official number on another phone to check.

This is because 10 years ago I had one of the proto-type scam calls from someone pretending to be a police officer about fraudulent use of my bank card and only put the phone down when they asked what PIN I would like on the new account they were allegedly opening for me.

Don't beat yourself up, Op. It's so easy to be taken in.

I'd be suspicious about the seller of the car part. They were aware of the timing - that you'd just made a purchase via PayPal. It was plausible because of the timing. Did the seller have your mobile number?

52andblue · 26/08/2020 15:53

@DianaT1969
Yes my number is linked to my Paypal account though whether they can access that I am not sure. It was only about 2 hours after I'd bought the part, but I guess it could be coincidence?

I also got a convincing text. I just went directly to PayPal website and didn’t follow the link. Nothing on the website, so I’ve blocked the number.

I think if in doubt always go to the website and never ever EVER follow links!

Ontheboardwalk · 26/08/2020 21:58

I’ve been having a few spam/phishing texts recently and they’ve been really convincing. I’d like to know where they got my number from

Ofcom say you should forward all spam text messages to 7726 (spells SPAM)
