Can I ask.... Do you Tip your Hairdresser?

Youngatheart00 · 13/08/2020 20:28

Just wondering....I have a cut and colour booked Saturday at a fairly high end salon. It’ll cost around £200 pre tips.

Should I tip, or is that ‘beneath’ high end salons? If so, who and how much?

I don’t tip- my hair costs similar to yours, no way am I tipping on top of that.

Rebelwithallthecause · 13/08/2020 20:30

No

HanPanPeg · 13/08/2020 20:30

No, my tip is if I go back

I do, but my hairdresser is also my friend who charges mates rates so I’d feel mean if I didn’t!

Honeypickle · 13/08/2020 20:33

Yes of course I do.

Elieza · 13/08/2020 20:33

Mine costs between £50 and £75 depending on what I get done. I tip 10%.
However if it were £200 I’d perhaps think twice about parting with any more money.
To be honest I don’t think any hair treatment is worth that to me!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/08/2020 20:35

No. My hairdresser owns her own salon and earns more than me.

bagelbaby · 13/08/2020 20:35

Yes. Always have done

Aurorie11 · 13/08/2020 20:36

I don’t as my hairdresser is one of the Directors, I would if they weren’t a Director

Mammyloveswine · 13/08/2020 20:37

£200 for a cut and colour?? faints

Youngatheart00 · 13/08/2020 20:37

In the past I’ve given my stylist £20 and colourist £20 but I only get colour done every 18 months or so (which I know sounds strange, but it works for me).

I only tip when I’m super happy and I always am at this salon- I know it’s a big expense but I get my hair cut 2-3 times a year and obviously wear it every day 😂

Just got nervous on the tipping etiquette. The last thing I’d want to do is ‘insult’ them by tipping when they’re fairly senior and no doubt on a half decent wage.

Also - prob a silly question but will I be required to wear a mask for the whole time? I’ll be there about 3 hours I think and I’m imagining sitting under one of those colour heater things and melting under a mask. Kind of didn’t cross my mind when I booked it!

Re masks - yes, you have to wear one the whole time. I went recently.

Hairthrowaway · 13/08/2020 20:42

No, but I go to a chain salon franchise rather than an independent salon

Youngatheart00 · 13/08/2020 20:42

@Waxonwaxoff0 how did you find it?

OP posts:
SaltyMagnolia · 13/08/2020 20:43

I always do, mine costs £120 and I give her a tenner

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 13/08/2020 20:44

Yes I do.

Hairthrowaway · 13/08/2020 20:44

Masks are a weird one, my salon’s website/insta said masks are compulsory but they weren’t enforcing it on the day! Plenty of clients without masks, the staff kept taking theirs off and adjusting it and they even let one client take her mask off mid way as she didn’t want to wear it anymore. They also asked clients to take their masks off for before/after photos lol

I wore mine for the duration of my long appointment, it was fine.

Youngatheart00 · 13/08/2020 20:45

On the website of my salon it says the staff are wearing visors. But I guess it’s the only clients. I’m not objecting, but just coming to terms with it! No magazines either....I’ll take my own!

Seems about 50/50 on the tipping. I think it’s the cash bit that’s unnerved me - been using hardly any cash recently and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s card only.

OP posts:
Countrysidelife54 · 13/08/2020 20:47

I tip mine but she only charges me 40, for hair cut and highlights, I pay her 60 or 70.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/08/2020 20:47

Spoke with my salon as my hair takes 4 hrs- they said it’s ok to pull the mask down and take it off as long as the hairdresser wasn’t neat ie. whilst my colour sets.

Bubbletrouble43 · 13/08/2020 20:48

Yes I tip but my haircuts only cost £30!

Youngatheart00 · 13/08/2020 20:49

I’m having balayage highlights so I’d expect to have the mask on while she’s working close to my face but good to know it could potentially come off while the colour takes

OP posts:
BadDucks · 13/08/2020 20:51

Not anymore. I used to when a cut was around £50 but prices have increased over the last couple of years and now a cut and blow dry is £70. I could find a cheaper salon but I like the way they cut my hair so my loyalty and willingness to pay significantly higher prices than other local salons is reward enough!
