Anyone else hate summer?

treefox3513 · 11/08/2020 11:13

I can't say I've ever liked it. As a child I wasn't bothered by it, I would look forward to escaping school for a while but that's it. I preferred the rainy days, even from a young age. I recall snuggling up with some favourite tv and watching thunder storms and just feeling gloriously content.

As a late teen my job was seasonal and all summer long I worked from 8am to 8 or 9pm, in the sweltering heat, with no fan, dealing with 100's of people (some drunk and obnoxious) and at the end of the day I was exhausted and completely peopled out. On my day off the last thing I wanted to do was go outside and be around more people, wether I had to interact with them or not.

This has only intensified as I have got older and had two DC. Keeping a toddler and a 11 month old suitably sun creamed and hydrated is a full time job! There's no shade in my garden and babies do not sleep in the heat, meaning less sleep for my husband and I who are already struggling to sleep in the humid weather.

All the loud people appear in the summer, yelling and screaming in their gardens, music is louder, parties longer and bigger. I can't have the DC's windows open during the evening whilst they are trying to sleep, it's usually too loud.

I never felt guilty for not enjoying the hot humid weather until I had DC. Now I'm expected to 'make the most of it' 'make memories' and 'enjoy the glorious sunshine' which is now already so hot we have come back home from the park.

I enjoy layering up, wearing my boots and feeling the crisp leaves crunch underfoot, breathing in the cool crisp air and enjoying a hot coffee on autumn walks. Life seems easier, quieter, less chaotic.

Other than my husband, I don't know anyone else who dislikes summer to the extent that we do.

It has been suggested that it could possibly be sensory overload, there is so much going on I the summer and so many people, it's a lot to take in.

Anyone else feel like this?

So nice to see I'm not alone in my dislike for summer. Being hot, sweaty and chasing after a toddler is not my idea of fun. I much prefer our autumn walks with the leaves crunching under our feet. We go out more when it's not so hot. Very much looking forward to autumn 😊

namedchange112 · 11/08/2020 17:24

Yep, other than my complexion being 10 times better with a bit of a tan the only thing I like about Summer is that it's followed by Autumn and Winter!

AlwaysDancing1234 · 11/08/2020 17:45

Definitely my least favourite season. Too hot and too busy at the beach.

I have a fairly physical job. Today at work I couldn’t see out of my eyes as the sweat had taken over my vision that’s how hot I was.

I hate the summer. I hate summer clothes. I hate being sweaty. I hate not being able to sit under a blanket on the sofa. I hate being at work in this heat.

Did I mention that I hate it.

For love of everything. Will someone turn the sun down.

AriesTheRam · 11/08/2020 18:05

@treefox3513 we like Benidorm in winter. You still get some sun but its only around 18 degrees at most.If you do decide to do Spain for your kids then id do april, nov or Dec.

hellofromcornwall · 11/08/2020 18:07

I really detest Summer. I don’t even know why

Cakeorchocolate · 11/08/2020 18:23

I wouldn't say hate. But I don't cope well with it. I get sweaty and then sticky, feeling like I need a shower hours before there's any point even bothering. I would happily have multiple showers a day if it wasn't irresponsible for water usage. (Fortunately i don't seem to get smelly with the sweaty bit!)
Migraines, or at least worse headaches than my usual daily level, squinting even with sunglasses and a cap.

Maybe I do hate it !!

But yes the most annoying part is that expectation that you should be outside in it all day long.
It's no good for me with migraines and I've never coped well with heat.
Despite having known me for 15yrs dh still doesn't get this. Nor does DM or Dsis for that matter. Both sun worshippers, and dsis lives in Spain as she always claimed she was born in the wrong country!

I end up mostly staying inside.

We enjoy a winter Center Parcs break.
I don't tolerate cold very well either though. Not proper cold. Need to be togged up with thermals and ski clothes! Cool is ok.

I'm happiest in front of a fire and a movie with a hot choc. Bliss.

wrexham · 11/08/2020 19:05

I like the absence of cold and light evenings, so disagree with the OP.

EasilyDelighted · 11/08/2020 19:09

I hate it when it's properly hot like this. Don't mind when it's high teens to low 20s, fresh breeze, rainy days now and again. I hate feeling sweaty, hate the feel of the hot sun on my skin, hate all the insect bites and heat rashes.

OhToBeASeahorse · 11/08/2020 19:10

I'm absolutely miserable. Poor 2 year old DS not sleeping properly, I'm stressed about trying to keep his room below 30 degrees, I dont have any evening because he cant settle in the heat and then he is exhausted all the next morning.

I hate suncream but I burn so quickly, I hate the feeling of it on my skin.

Also 31 weeks pregnant. Could cry most of the time this week!

EasilyDelighted · 11/08/2020 19:10

I do like the light evenings and mornings though, that's my time when it's cooler.

Spudlet · 11/08/2020 19:12

I like warm, but it’s way too hot here to be fun at the moment. Our houses aren’t set up for it at all - well ours isn’t, it’s like an oven. The garden is crispy, without enough shade, and it’s too hot to get outside and do much. And there are loads of wasps around at the moment.

I enjoy being able to go outside and sit comfortably while DS plays, but for me that’s about 10 degrees cooler than it actually is! And I love autumn walking and running in the woods. But I do like the lighter evenings and mornings of the summer though. The darkness in winter gets a bit much.

Basically if I could live in a permanent state of early summer or early autumn, Od be well content Grin

It does beg the question of how we’re going to adapt though because as I understand it, climate change is going to make this sort of weather more common for us. So we’re going to have to adapt our houses. I’m considering building a sort of pergola over the back yard for shade, and if I could afford it I’d fit shutters to the front of the house to keep the afternoon sun out. I might also consider lifting the carpet and having hard floors, with big rugs that could be laid down i winter for extra warmth. I think we’re going to have to adapt to this, tbh.

VinylDetective · 11/08/2020 19:14

I love the summer but today’s been too hot even for me.

MegaClutterSlut · 11/08/2020 19:17

I hate summer and the heat atm is an absolute piss take. Bring on autumn!

Dorobie · 11/08/2020 19:25

I love it.... but I’m a teacher who lives in a National Park and I love being outdoors and active. So the summer gives many more opportunities for me! I’ve been swimming in a lake or the sea on every hot day and tailor my walks/bike rides around water too.

lotusbell · 11/08/2020 19:28

Yes, I hate the hot weather. I like being outside but cannot just sit in sweltering heat. What I hate more though is being called a miserable sod for it, or even better "oh don't complain, it'll be dark.and cold soon". Yes please!

ginghamtablecloths · 11/08/2020 19:31

I don't like extreme heat and at last the TV weather forecasters have mentioned that the hot weather may make it difficult to sleep, humidity and hay fever may be uncomfortable, etc. What took them so long? We were all supposed to enjoy it.

No-one likes feeling hot and sticky with sweat dripping down their arms. It's foul and I can't wait for autumn.

Bassettgirl · 11/08/2020 19:35

I used to really dislike summer and wish it away, but now I have kids I do like doing summer days out and beach holidays (in the UK) and seeing them play in the garden.

But this sort of heat is NOT for me (unless I were on holiday in an air conditioned chalet with a pool, which I am never).

Bring on the rain!

TwoZeroTwoZero · 11/08/2020 19:38

I don't hate summer but neither do I really like it. I hate the hot, sticky days where I'm too hot to eat, too hot to do anything and too hot to sleep etc. I don't like our garden being alive with ants. I do like ice-cream, long and late evening walks when it's warm but not too hot and I like watching the change from summer to autumn.

GreyGardens88 · 11/08/2020 19:39

I don't hate it but I think it's overrated. Spring's my favourite, all the nice bulb flowers and seeing everything come to life, lighter evenings and warmer temperatures and getting your pale pins out to see the sun for the first time in 6 months, before Summer hits and it gets too hot and I come out in hives all over.

EasilyDelighted · 11/08/2020 19:40

It's worse this year with working from home, I was in the office with aircon on yesterday and it was bliss compared to working in my kitchen today.

The80sweregreat · 11/08/2020 20:02

Met my people. I actually dread it and the lack of sleeping is getting me down too.
My worst season!

Bohoboo · 11/08/2020 20:05

Completely agree. I can't understand who likes this heat. Bring on chunky jumpers and boots with hot drinks and cosy fires. If I lived by water I might well find it more bearable but over a week of 33 degree heat and over is just horrid. I keep looking at the weather forecast to see when it's going to break.

TinySongstress · 11/08/2020 20:06

Oh I HATE it. Everything mentioned already plus the constant, crushing pressure of FOMO.

'What did you do this weekend? We had 37 BBQ's, frolicked at the beach, went on a woodland walk, built a summerhouse, paddle-boarded Lake Coniston and drank a whole vat of wine with salad caprese, alfresco *tinkly little laugh'

Me- 'I opened every window in my house, sat naked eating an entire box of freeze pops and binge watched Chernobyl'.

The80sweregreat · 11/08/2020 20:46

I hate the fact that people laugh at me with my 'heat hating 'ways! It's almost as if I have a problem that nobody else has or something! They don't understand 😩
I will never look cool in hot weather or learn to love it!
