Anyone else hate summer?

I can't say I've ever liked it. As a child I wasn't bothered by it, I would look forward to escaping school for a while but that's it. I preferred the rainy days, even from a young age. I recall snuggling up with some favourite tv and watching thunder storms and just feeling gloriously content.

As a late teen my job was seasonal and all summer long I worked from 8am to 8 or 9pm, in the sweltering heat, with no fan, dealing with 100's of people (some drunk and obnoxious) and at the end of the day I was exhausted and completely peopled out. On my day off the last thing I wanted to do was go outside and be around more people, wether I had to interact with them or not.

This has only intensified as I have got older and had two DC. Keeping a toddler and a 11 month old suitably sun creamed and hydrated is a full time job! There's no shade in my garden and babies do not sleep in the heat, meaning less sleep for my husband and I who are already struggling to sleep in the humid weather.

All the loud people appear in the summer, yelling and screaming in their gardens, music is louder, parties longer and bigger. I can't have the DC's windows open during the evening whilst they are trying to sleep, it's usually too loud.

I never felt guilty for not enjoying the hot humid weather until I had DC. Now I'm expected to 'make the most of it' 'make memories' and 'enjoy the glorious sunshine' which is now already so hot we have come back home from the park.

I enjoy layering up, wearing my boots and feeling the crisp leaves crunch underfoot, breathing in the cool crisp air and enjoying a hot coffee on autumn walks. Life seems easier, quieter, less chaotic.

Other than my husband, I don't know anyone else who dislikes summer to the extent that we do.

It has been suggested that it could possibly be sensory overload, there is so much going on I the summer and so many people, it's a lot to take in.

Anyone else feel like this?

It really depends on where you live and your lifestyle. I think many people who hate summer probably have one of or a combination of the following:- live in the southern half of the country where it is much hotter, live in a city with no outside space, use public transport to get to work, have horrible neighbours, work in places with no aircon, have small children, feel the heat badly, suffer from hay fever or have a medical condition that is worse in the heat. I feel every sympathy for people who find it unbearable.

I don’t hate summer because summer where I live is never like the ones on mumsnet that people hate. I don’t live in London, It very rarely gets too hot where I live, I don’t have noisy and inconsiderate neighbours, I live on a hill in a rural area in a house with a garden, and even on hot days there is always a breeze, under normal circumstances I drive to work in a car with aircon to an office with aircon, a typical autumn/winter day where I live is grey and damp, not crisp and sunny, I have poor eyesight so the brighter days are better for me, and I love the long, light evenings and I don’t have small children.

I much prefer wearing summer clothes – underwear and a dress and I’m ready to go. I hate being bundled up in several layers as I find it constricting.

For those who hate summer I hope it cools down enough for you to be comfortable.

@Spudlet that's a good point. Global warming scares me for obvious reasons, but one of them is how I will genuinely cope with increasingly uncomfortable weather.

I feel as though every summer is getting hotter and I can't continue to waste my garden space so I think we might buy a gazebo or an awning or something. My kids have barely played in the garden.

I did want to plant trees for shade and environmental reasons, but the price floored me!

Is it summer you hate or hot weather in particular?

It isn't consistently hot every day during a typical British summer. Where I live April, May and June have been unusually pleasant and warm this year, with the odd hot day, but July was disappointing and cool and wet by and large. August has been better, but nothing like as hot as the southern half of the country.

@Ginfordinner it's the heat and all that comes with I suppose!
It does vary greatly on location I find. I do love Iceland and Norway though, the people, the weather etc. Think I'm just made for cooler climates!

It’s much, much nicer where I am today - the sun is shining and it’s warm enough for shorts and a t-shirt, but it’s not blazing down. We’re just back from a playground trip which would have been unthinkable earlier in the week, and the windows are all open because there’s a pleasant breeze. I think DH may actually get some sleep tonight - I’ve been ok but he’s really struggled with the heat at night.

This sort of weather is what makes summer enjoyable, imo. The last few days have been an endurance test!

I do like summer but not this very hot weather. If the temperature is lower than about 24 but sunny I like it.

I don't like winter. I hate winter clothes jumpers and boots are horrible. I hate the dark mornings and evenings and everything seems so depressing

I hate rain when i'm out the house, I hate the heat when i'm in the house. The opposite applies.

I'ma pale Scottish person so don't like it above 12 degrees - how people survive in London temperatures I have no idea as it is usually 10 degrees hotter. I also get migraines and have scummy neighbours.

I noticed in semi-rural Sweden that heat was more tolerable - I put it down to better design of buildings, air con and people not getting pissed/fighting/constant BBQs/acting like dicks at 17 degrees.Plus not having to go to work etc.

I feel the cold easily. 12 degrees is jumper and coat weather for me and, probably for most people.

@TabbyM what is it with the culture of as soon as the sun is out, people must drink copious amounts of alcohol, have constant bbqs, play shitty music and shout and scream?
And if you don't do it, constantly, you're a misery guts!

I actually got called a misery by my boss on a conference call yesterday as she asked how I specifically was coping with the heat as she knew I didn't like it and I replied with - just looking forward to autumn and some cooler weather.

You need better neighbours treefox.
Most of the people in our part of the village are retired or near retirement age (as are we), and don't play loud music, drink loads, have loads of BBQs/parties etc.

We sometimes hear chidren playing in their gardens on the other side of the railway line or people mowing their lawns, but those are (not unpleasant) summer sounds to me.

People did text me about my ' heat hate! ' ( people that like it generally)
I do feel for anyone away in tents or caravans when it is torrential rain as it can spoil holidays, but I'm glad it's a bit cooler now myself. You can't win with the weather though.
