How were the Sunday evenings of your youth?

Mine consisted of a bath and hair wash, nightie and slippers on in front of the gas fire, a “Sunday tea” which consisted of chopped apple, cheese and bread and butter triangles. Usually eaten while watching a BBC family drama such as The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, or The Borrowers. Possibly a bit of Antiques Roadshow (which I found a bit boring).

In my teen years I would be upstairs trying to record my favourite songs from the Pepsi Max top 40 with Dr Fox.

What about you?

Very similar. Tea was tinned salmon sandwiches ( bones included), tinned fruit and evaporated milk.

I used to love those Sunday evening dramas they had in the Autumn/Winter period when it was just getting dark.

@AuntieMarys oh sometimes we had tinned pilchard toasted sandwiches! Bones and all!

Similar here as well. Sunday was hair wash night, and the entire family watching TV together, which was a fairly unusual occurrence in our house. We used to mostly watch Jacques Cousteau/wildlife programmes.

@SnuggyBuggy I wish there was more family drama to enjoy now.

I agree, if they don't bring them back when mine is older I might try to track down some DVDs and start a tradition.

Tingha and Tucker, Top of the Pops on the radio, homework and utter tedium. Still don't like Sundays.

I used to hate Sunday evenings when I was a child, because I knew that it heralded another week at school. I can still remember that feeling of dread at the very thought of waking up on Monday morning.

We lived in the middle of no where, we used to play in the garden all day, have dinner which was usually sunday roast , bath or shower then we'd watch Heartbeat or Dr Quinn medicine woman or our favourite with the canadian mounty (cant remember name of show) then bed.

when older, I would record my favourite songs off the top 40, watch friends, then would spend a good few hrs (after 6pm free calls) on the landline to various friends, shower and bed!

I often think that kids today miss the experience of being so bored that they will watch whatever their parents are watching, just because it is tv.

I have such vivid memories of my heart sinking as the World in Action or Panorama theme tune came on, but I’d still watch, not understanding most of it. But then on a Sunday there would be something like That’s Life to watch after a bath, a surfing dog, an oddly shaped parsnip, and life felt good.

I don’t remember feeling back to school dread but I probably did as I wasn’t a big fan of school!

Tea was boiled eggs and soldiers followed by sponge cake, eaten at the kitchen table while my dad was out at Evensong (he was organist in the next village). Presumably when small we then went to bed, though I don't remember the details. My parents would sit on the settee eating egg sandwiches and doing the Sunday Express Skeleton crossword.

Later on I would ring for and sing at (a different) Evensong myself, and join in the simpler clues of the crossword.

November and December those over about 9 would go over to the Vicarage in the next village for a Carol Service rehearsal.

Boooring. No hair washing, that was Saturday night so we were clean for church. Usually sandwiches, like the others, as we would have had roast chicken and a dessert. DM would do the ironing and watch some tedious ITV drama. In my teens I'd be scrambling to complete the mountain of homework I'd ignored 😅

Hearing this meant the weekend was over

What's worse is that now I have a child at school, I watch something the kids would deem tedious as I iron on a Sunday evening.

Yes yes to Heartbeat or some other grown up program I really didn’t care for

We always had our main meal in the evenings even on Sunday , so it was put the horses to bed , home , bath , dinner and get ready for school the next day .

I also know someone who says whenever he hears the intro to Antiques Roadshow he is still struck by the "shit I haven't done my homework" feeling

Under 13 - bath, hair wash, plaits to dry, nightie or pyjamas. Jam on toast, Antiques Road Show or something. Bed, read, lights out.

13+ - room after dinner, any homework I had to finish, Chart Show, Ski Sunday, shower, Toner / Shader wash in colour, music / tv / play Vic 20 games, read. Downstairs for a snack. Bed, read, lights out.

Blackcurrant jam on crusty bread with blackened crust , salmon sandwiches , tinned fruit with tinned cream , salad with salad cream - at my nan's often .
At home i would listen / tape top 40.
Songs of praise , antique road show , feeling bored then dread of school next day , really like Sundays now as an adult .

I don't really remember actually! Nothing particularly different to any other day of the week. Although my parents always used to watch Antiques Roadshow (and still do).
