How were the Sunday evenings of your youth?

Mine consisted of a bath and hair wash, nightie and slippers on in front of the gas fire, a “Sunday tea” which consisted of chopped apple, cheese and bread and butter triangles. Usually eaten while watching a BBC family drama such as The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, or The Borrowers. Possibly a bit of Antiques Roadshow (which I found a bit boring).

In my teen years I would be upstairs trying to record my favourite songs from the Pepsi Max top 40 with Dr Fox.

What about you?

We had a buffet style tea in the lounge in front of the telly, which was a sunday evening treat! All other evening meals were in the dining room, at the table. Tea because we would have had a roast dinner for our midday meal. And there would have been homemade cakes and scones that mum had made earlier in the day. Yum! Followed by bath and hairwash, watch a bit more telly (Sunday night drama) and then bed. Like PP, dreaded school the next day, for absolutely no reason whatsoever!

I do tend to force my kids to watch Countryfile which I know they will find boring but I think it’s important they watch something that isn’t on YouTube!

Bath, I had the first water because I was the oldest! I used to watch the beginning of heartbeat because I liked the song and usually start pretending to feel unwell so that I wouldn't have to go to school the next day, sometimes it worked!
When I was a teen it would be texting friends about where to meet before school in the morning and gossiping about the week before.

I don’t think a Sunday went by without a visit to a garden centre. I guess almost everything else was shut. Very exciting to get a slice of carrot cake in the cafe though, and choose which summer house I’d have if I could have any of them.

The charts on Radio 1 were the real charts though. Even if you listened to your local commercial radio station most of the week, it was still the done thing to put on Radio 1 on Sunday nights. So nur.

The Songs of Praise theme tune was the death knell for the weekend for me. That & the smell of gravy.
I had long, thick hair which got washed on a Sunday after dinner & mum dried it for me in front of the fire, until declaring that I was old enough to do it myself. Personally, I think my hair was obscuring her viewing of John Nettles in Bergerac.

Taking the piss out of Howard's Way also became a popular family Sunday night ritual.

We stayed at my dad's on Saturday nights and then, on sunday mornings, we'd either walk with my dad or catch the bus to my nannan's where we'd spend the day either playing out or watching Bullseye, the Antiques Roadshow and that one where they filmed singing in a church service. We went home when my mam came to collect us and then have a big Sunday roast before bath and bed ready for school in the morning. I used to tape the Top 40 from the radio so I could listen again later in the week.

Spend the afternoon/evening tip towing around my father and not daring to make any noise (breathing too heavy) etc for fear he would kick off aggressively. Ahh happy childhood memories. It was always worse at the weekends.

Recording songs on the Top 40 upstairs - but it was Tony Blackburn or Mark Goodyear presenting it in those days I think.

7pm the telly would be on, something like Jesus of Nazareth or Moses the Lawgiver might be on. Or Stars on Sunday. Or The Golden Shot. I’d be eating marmalade on toast as we’d usually have had a big Sunday lunch.

There’d be a sitcom of some sort on later. Butterflies. And then That’s Life

I might sometimes be reading instead if I didn’t like the tv.

Then bed!

The smell of gravy, endlessly boiling vegetables, steamed up windows and a BBC radio show that started with people singing “ Sing something simple...” is so evocative of Sunday from my childhood that I feel like I’m there right now!

I would be bored to tears on a Sunday. We’d always have Sunday roast so something like crumpets at 5pm,
Antiques roadshow and Corrie used to be on at 7:30 back then.
Definitely the Sunday eve dread not wanting to go back to school.

I wonder if my kids get that...they never say anything if they do!

Thanks @mrsemcgregor it is what it is I suppose. By contrast I like to think my DC will look back on their Sundays as a cosy, chilled day 😊 I enjoy Sundays now getting everything reset for the week.

Yup, quite liked the cold tea, but mainly remember either cosiness or boredom and dread of school, depending on the family mood. Hated Antiques Roadshow and Last of the Summer Wine. Would read, practice musical instrument or do crafts. When older would get organised for school etc.

DH’s father worked away and wasn’t there Sun afternoon to Fri, so DH says he was v often upset his DF had gone.

I literally cant remember. Both my parents did shift work which included weekends and nights so there wasnt much pattern to stuff. I do remeber the autumn tv dramas very fondly though.

Sunday dinner followed by defrosted chocolate gateau. Then I would listen to the charts and tape as appropriate whilst doing my homework last minute. Then I used to like a bath and to watch Top Gear and Poirot in bed. I used to struggle to fall asleep so I sometimes used to listen to a local phone in show and now again it would feature a psychic woman.

Evensong (was a chorister) and then bbc1 drama at 7.25 (missed the beginning) and then the dreaded English essay, done on my knee.

Anneka's Challenge in the lounge. We had a fire
Much better house than we do now
Feeling a bit maudlin recently about what I haven't got which isn't like me

I don't remember anything specific when I was little. Once I was a teen I joined the church youth group which was a great way to finish off the weekend. It was really unusual round our way for anything to actually happen on a Sunday evening so it felt special. Made lifelong friends too 🙂

The Borrowers. Five Children and It. The Antiques Roadshow. Songs of Praise. Generally a ‘snack’ tea like toast after a bit roast earlier in the day.

Good times.

Seeline I used to go to a church youth club too, it was good fun and we had quite lively discussions with the trendy young curate Grin. A few years ago we had a 40 year reunion, it was wonderful meeting up and the young curate now in a retired vicar in his 70s Grin.

Yes a bath in about 2.5 inches of tepid water followed by nightie, quilted nylon dressing gown and a run to the gas fire in the sitting room which was the only source of heat in the entire house. No hairdryer so my long thick hair would sort of dry and my nylon dressing gown would sort of melt as I sat with my back to the fire.

Then some kind of foul sandwich (fish paste, sardines, salmon or an egg boiled for a week or so) followed by tinned fruit salad with evaporated milk or Elmlea, or Angel Delight.

I sound about 85 but actually we were just poor.

I still cannot stand the sight of tinned grapes/cherries. They were just so disgusting.

I was a weekly boarder. Sunday afternoons filled me with such dread. Dinner, bath then into the awful school uniform, pack and be taken to school. I hated it. My parents never seemed to want to hear how much I really did.
I so remember that 'Sunday evening' feeling .
