Did anyone else go through a waistcoat with tshirt phase in the early noughties?

Just dug out a particularly unflattering photo of myself in bootcuts, a tshirt and a tweed waistcoat.

Who told me this was fashionable?! Hmm

Weirdly was only thinking the other day that this might be a Good Idea now, by way of covering the belly, and wondering where my lovely embroidered cotton weskit from the 90s had gone... Resounding no, reading these comments!

I was also aiming for Sarah from labyrinth or her from lost boys. But ended up more blossom.

. I’ve quite the collection - wear them all ways up and love a bit of vintage. I’m inspired by street style and mixing up all sorts of eras. I’m sure the fashion police would make an arrest but I couldn’t give a stuff - if I like it, I wear it!

I was wearing waistcoats in the late seventies after watching Annie Hall. In the 90s I wore a suede waistcoat with an oversized white grandad collared shirt. I also had a beaded and embroidered waistcoat that I can’t bear to part with but which is miles too small now.

SerenityNowwwww · 31/07/2020 22:40

I wore them from the mid 80s with a shirt - nice fitted ones.

RomaineCalm · 31/07/2020 22:52

@CeliaCanth

Oh, yes. Mine was rust red suede which I wore with a white “body” (those things with crotch poppers) and black jeans. Actually, I think I still have it somewhere!

I think I was sporting pretty much the same outfit but with a black 'body'. If I remember rightly my favourite waistcoat was from the BHS men's sale.

x2boys · 31/07/2020 22:52

I had a few waistcoats in the mid 90,s teamed with a body top and a long flowey skirt ,also wore docs with rainbow laces like a pp.

SecretNutellaFix · 31/07/2020 22:53

One outfit I remember quite well was white chiffon blouse/ bodysuit thing with a waistcoat over the top worn with a tartan mini skirt, thick black tights, white rolled-down slouch socks and black boots.

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 31/07/2020 22:58

I had a particularly splendid cream one for my confirmation. Paired with a green silk shirt (which I loved & would still wear now if it hadn't been worn out & still fitted) & a stunning mid calf linen skirt. There might have been a hat as well

Zara have about a dozen waistcoats in at the moment - they are trying to bring them back!

I was eyeing them up whilst knowing I am too old (and thick waisted) now

onemouseplace · 31/07/2020 23:18

I wore my waistcoats with both the grandad shirt and body variations.

God those bodies were uncomfortable. I have long back disease anyway, and they were the most uncomfortable digging in things ever.

I still wear my grandfathers waistcoat which he had made for him when he was a young man. He was born in 1912.

I also used to wear jackets and overcoats that my dad had made for him in the 50s when he lived in Italy - he was very skinny as a young man and I was a beanpole so they fitted beautifully.

dudsville · 01/08/2020 08:33

I loved that outfit but it was more late 80s for me.

LovelyWeekAway · 01/08/2020 08:38

I wore waistcoats as a layer but this was more early 90’s a la Blossom style.

Horrid patterned waistcoat over blouse or bodysuit with baggy jeans and a floppy hat
Little black choker with metal cross on it.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 01/08/2020 09:11

Quiggins in Liverpool for me. I loved that place

The permanent smell of weed and joss sticks. Those were the days....Grin

I did go through a hat wearing stage and was regularly called Blossom too.

The checked shirt, baggy jeans and timberland boots phase was great.

pussycatinboots · 01/08/2020 09:17

I had a tan coloured suede one - it was like wearing a truss it was so stiff!

And a dusky pink knitted one i wore under a long sleeve floaty blouse with ruffled cuffs and a flouncy neck ruffle.

🤣🤣

What a look 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

I made my confirmation in a particularly fetching ensemble which today would be sold to hip young things as a ‘lilac co-ord’. I look about 37 in the photo.

I never wore a waistcoat, maybe because I was never fashionable.
I did wear checked shirts in the 90s when I was a teenager. I noticed a relative who is 16 wearing one of my old checked shirts the other day. It must be at least 25 years old!! I wore DMs with everything as a teenager and still do now.
We could have a whole other thread on' what I wore for my confirmation', but mine was in 1993 and I wore a blue dress made of a velvety material, I might still have it somewhere even though I haven't worn it since. I remember trawling round shops with my mum trying to find something that wasn't black and wasn't too revealing for church that I would agree to.

menofharlech · 01/08/2020 10:04

Ohhhh I had a tapestry one. I tried to make a red velvet one but it didn't work despite my mums best efforts (she is an excellent sewer).

I did pilfer one from my dad which had a tan wool front and a red watered silk back but I could never rock it with confidence.

TSSDNCOP · 01/08/2020 13:26

Mine was black leather. Worn with a satin shirt, black ski pants and pointy black ankle boots. I looked fucking epic.

crankysaurus · 01/08/2020 13:33

I bought one from a hippie shop, black with stars and swirls. I believe a photo may exist of this crime against fashion.

ClaryFairchild · 01/08/2020 13:41

Late 80s for me, I had loads of them!! Worn undone, and paired with a super skinny tie if worn with a collared shirt, lol!

ClaryFairchild · 01/08/2020 13:42

oh and those boots that used to have excess fabric and were all scrunched up around the ankles.....

Frankiemintz · 01/08/2020 13:51

I had a red suede waistcoat from Kensington Market. It smelt of every pub and club that I’d ever been to.

Inthebleakmidwinteriwouldsing · 01/08/2020 13:54

My waste coat was cream jackard with diamond coloured patterns, similar to what you find as pub upholstery

Late ‘80s here, my best friend’s mum made her one out of some leftover curtain fabric. Like that heavy faux-tapestry fabric from the best sitting room Grin
