Did anyone else go through a waistcoat with tshirt phase in the early noughties?

Just dug out a particularly unflattering photo of myself in bootcuts, a tshirt and a tweed waistcoat.

Who told me this was fashionable?! Hmm

Yes black with tartan Rupert the bear trousers

FattyBoom · 31/07/2020 21:54

Waistcoat (zip up), jeans and bodysuit (where the poppers used to either randomly unpop or just rub each thigh at the edges), and platform heeled boots

Ahhhh being 20 was great

monkeytennis97 · 31/07/2020 21:54

Yes! Been trying to find a specific one I loved from the early 90s on eBay... to no avail

I wore one of my dad’s brown suit waistcoats, with a white shirt, some brown slacks made by my mum, and one of my dad’s beige jacquard cardigans. And a tie.

I was aiming for Annie Hall, but missed and ended up looking like a retired civil servant at a golf club fork lunch.

The shame.

frogswimming · 31/07/2020 21:55

Yeah I had a paisley waistcoat with an oversized cream shirt and baggy stonewashed jeans. I'd say it was 1987/1988 though.

isabellerossignol · 31/07/2020 21:55

Swiftly followed by the mid to later noughties trend of jeans and checked shirt!

From about 1992 to 1996 the only clothes I owned were a couple of pairs of jeans, a pair of DMs and about four checked shirts. I got through most of university still wearing the same clothes I had been wearing in sixth form. About the end of 1996 I went mad and bought an ankle length skirt in the TopShop sale and wore it with my DMs as well.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 31/07/2020 21:58

I wore a oversized white shirt under a tiny black tank top. I thought I looked amazing, Coloured jeans and a mini rucksack.

LunaNorth · 31/07/2020 21:59

I also had a suede bottle green one nicked off my mum, which I wore with a black t-shirt, Daisy Dukes, black opaques and DMs.

A red, gold and bottle green striped one which I wore with a gold shirt and bottle green trousers Blush

And a suit which consisted of a black and purple longline cotton waistcoat with matching shorts.

Confused

There's a picture of me in a black (natch) t-shirt with a brightly coloured waistcoat and black skirt (which subsequently caught fire) on my 30th birthday. 1993.

frogswimming · 31/07/2020 22:05

My checked shirt was pinched off either my big brother or sister. I had a charity shop sheepskin coat, black leather jacket in a sort of pea coat style and a suede jacket from a charity shop too. Slip on docs with rainbow stitching.

Used to buy second hand jeans, t shirts, tops, shirts from afflecks palace in Manchester and a shop I think was called flip.

In 1995 I had either that outfit or, for going to nightclubs, a turquoise satin a line mini skirt with black platform knee boots and a tight cropped white t shirt with a star on it (from top shop and Chelsea girl).

In 1994 a black and white gingham mini dress worn over a tight white t shirt and a silver satin spaghetti strap mini dress with a cowel neck.

roundandsideways · 31/07/2020 22:06

Oh my god. I'd actually blanked this from my mind. 😱

FusionChefGeoff · 31/07/2020 22:09

Truly horrific photo of me on holiday with parents in white denim shorts, baggy khaki t shirt and a black satin waistcoat. I mean, WTAF was I thinking??!

My parents gave me a clothing allowance and all the fashion responsibility that entailed FAR too early Grin

Remember these tapestry bad boys

ProudMarys · 31/07/2020 22:11

Ahhh yes with a white polo neck underneath, mine was all purple satin at the back and I think flowers on the front 😳

worldweary45 · 31/07/2020 22:12

I did waistcoats around 94, swiftly followed by men's wool blazer worn with jeans, T-shirt and doc martens, then followed by jeans and checked shirts

I was a very masculine teen, clearly!

I had a red suede waistcoat that turned my white T-shirt pink -I wasn't impressed

Quiggins in Liverpool for me. I loved that place...

AgnesNaismith · 31/07/2020 22:12

@Knobblybobbly I still accidentally try to dress myself like Sarah from Labyrinth. Ball dress included. She’s a fashion icon!

Also no to the waistcoat, but I did have low cut striped loose trousers with braces I wore down.....classy.

onemouseplace · 31/07/2020 22:12

I had two paisley waistcoats (one red, one blue from Laura Ashley of all places) that I loves. That was more 1992-4 though.

ProudMarys · 31/07/2020 22:13

Or maybe paisley...with tucked in mum jeans

Northernsoullover · 31/07/2020 22:15

Early 90's I used to wear levis 501s with a levis denim waistcoat. Double denim! Topped off with a red bandana on my head. I thought I was the dogs bollocks as I went off raving.

dementedma · 31/07/2020 22:16

Ooh yes. Still have a few of my dads. Vintage

BogRollBOGOF · 31/07/2020 22:17

I loved waistcoats in the mid-90s. I wish they'd come back in again Grin

AlphaDalpha · 31/07/2020 22:18

My amazing Auntie bought me the most gorgeous suede waistcoat from Tammy Girl.

TheRealHousewife · 31/07/2020 22:19

I still wear waistcoats .... I’ll get my coat 😬

BobbinThreadbare123 · 31/07/2020 22:20

Yes, early 2000s. Goth/punk version. Black waistcoat, black or purple Henley top and black low slung bootcut jeans with New Rocks or Converse. Awful with a large bust tbh!
