Irritated by this conversation in the shop but would you actually do anything about it?

Just after some other perspectives on this as I'm annoyed and wondering if I'm over reacting a bit (difficult and hormonal day generally so that's entirely possible!)

Yesterday morning quite early I popped into my local shop. There was only me, one other customer and the assistant. I was wearing a mask, the others weren't.

They (shop assistant and other customer) proceeded to have a loud, pointed conversation about how ridiculous masks were and how they were just for show and people should get out of their own backsides. All whilst sniggering in my direction.

The other customer left and as I was being served I told the shop assistant that I wouldn't continue shopping there if this attitude to masks was shared by all staff.

The assistant sniggered at me for a while then said "well I don't give a fuck"

As I left he'd called the other customer back (they clearly knew each other) and were giggling together again.

I'm annoyed but just wondered what others would do?

Let it go over my head and do nothing (I'm usually quite laid back and would choose this)

Stop using the shop (possible but inconvenient)

Complain (tempting and I've found an address but it does feel a bit OTT honestly)

What would you do?

Laughing at the thought that this is an "inflammatory post". Some people have led sheltered lives....

I think you should complain

Someone1987 · 17/07/2020 09:56

Why are people getting het up by this post? Why would she make this up?
And it was so rude, I would complain.

romeolovedjulliet · 17/07/2020 10:01

def complain about assistant, they were both idiots though, giggling ? how old were they 10 ?

Solongtoshort · 17/07/2020 10:02

Stop shopping there. The don’t deserve your custom if they swear at you. I imagine they will carry this attitude after the 24th.

I work in a shop and l have seen a remarkable difference in people wearing masks already.

I do think it’s too late this should of been implemented 4months ago.

IdblowJonSnow · 17/07/2020 10:04

Definitely complain.
Silly tossers, it's in their interests!

Zaphodsotherhead · 17/07/2020 10:04

I suspect it's temp staff taken on because college has closed and his mum told him he had to get a job.

Some of our temp staff can be a little...brusque at times. They haven't learned anything about customer service and don't intend to stay in retail when they achieve their (expected stellar) results from college/school. Retail is beneath them, and all that.

Just ignore it, OP. They are idiots. When mask wearing comes in in a week's time they are going to spend their whole day sniggering like Mutley.

BabyLlamaZen · 17/07/2020 10:05

Please complain

romeolovedjulliet · 17/07/2020 10:06

sniggering like mutley Grin

heartsonacake · 17/07/2020 10:06

You need to complain. The owners aren’t going to want that type of person working there.

fuckinghellapeacock · 17/07/2020 10:07

This member of staff can destroy the owners business - tell them!

Runmybathforme · 17/07/2020 10:08

No way would I let this go, complain to the owner/manager.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 17/07/2020 10:09

I can well believe this happened going by the conversations in the local groups on my facebook. And the idea that no retail worker would ever say something like that to a customer is hilarious.

What I would do now would depend on whether I had managed to refrain from getting into a full on argument in the shop or not. But I probably would complain.

Mrsjayy · 17/07/2020 10:09

I had the same experience in home bargains loudly sniggering then the next day Nicola Sturgeon announced they were mandatory so ... Just ignore them use the shop if it is convenient it wont be any skin of the shops nose if you don't go back.

BearSoFair · 17/07/2020 10:09

Some shop assistants most definitely would say that to a customer, I was duty manager when a staff member on till told someone to "fuck off then", so it does happen! If it were me I'd just stop using the shop. Complaining would be unlikely to achieve anything - the guy I worked with got a 'stern conversation' (company talk for 'a telling off' but no recorded action), had to re-do till training (all of an hour), then back to normal.

Just letting you know that we've deleted a number of troll hunting posts. The OP's been on the site for years so if they're here to troll us, they've waited a flipping long time.

Can we politely ask you to knock it on the head, please!

squeekums · 17/07/2020 10:15

Report it
You just don't do that in customer service, no matter the topic.

If you wanna snigger about a customer, you wait till your out of the public eye. - yes it shouldn't happen at all but that's naive thinking. The least you can expect is they say it in private.

romeolovedjulliet · 17/07/2020 10:17

one disgruntled customer talksto others about it,shop assistant is arsey to other customers, word gets round, a drop of 10 customersa day could be hard on some smaller shops.
we had a small shop near us which was very handy and the owner popular but then he retired. a new person came in and ran it in a very different way, she was a bit brash and the shop closed due to drop in footfall just four months after she took over.

GreyGardens88 · 17/07/2020 10:19

I would have gone ballistic, I would have asked the shop assistant to explain their attitude (chip on their shoulder about having to work in a shop probably) then made sure I got their name to make a complaint

verybritishproblems · 17/07/2020 10:21

The other customer left and as I was being served

OP! You still queued up and bought something? I would’ve left without buying anything!

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 17/07/2020 10:21

I would complain to the manager. The staff member was beyond rude. I can only think it was his last day working there and he really couldn't give a fuck.

SeasonFinale · 17/07/2020 10:22

Yes complain.

The assistant was rude and will be affecting the shop owner's business. If it was just the mask thing I probably wouldn't bother but the swearing swings it to a complaint for me.

On the basis that everyone will have to wear masks from 24th to go into shops the owner should be ensuring that their staff are aware of this requirement.

eaglejulesk · 17/07/2020 10:26

I wouldn't shop there again, and would have put down the goods I was purchasing and left them sitting there. I would also tell everyone I knew about the incident.

crazyunicornlady73 · 17/07/2020 10:28

OP! You still queued up and bought something? I would’ve left without buying anything!*

Grin I must be a bit of a mug, I read this and thought "oh yes I probably should have done this!" I suppose I was rushing to get to work, needed the items and another stop off would have been hugely inconvenient.... in my defence.
