Does anyone remember this 80s/90s picture book about a family of dragons?

It's a very vague memory but I know I loved reading the book (or possibly books, there may have been several) at school in the early 90s. There were no people in them, just an anthropomorphised dragon family wearing clothes, going to school etc. They were a similar level to to the Allan Ahlberg books, but definitely a different author. Lovely colourful pictures.

I've googled the heck out of it but to no avail - I just don't have enough detail to do a good search. I think it needs someone to go "Yes! I remember that!", hence giving in and posting here Smile

I immediately thought of Dennis the Dragon. I was at school in the 80s and loved those books.

Pocket dragons?

Dennis the Dragon looks cute, but no. Same for Pocket Dragons and Hubble Bubble. I really appreciate all the ideas though and I am seeing lots of good ideas for books for my kids Grin

Not Good Night Good Knight either Sad

It's funny, it sat on the school bookshelf alongside various Usbourne books, Jill Murphy, Ahlberg, and other typical books of that time and I assumed it was equally well known. It seems it may be more obscure though.

I clicked on this really hoping it was the same book I’ve been thinking about recently! My dragons were little dragon/fruit hybrids that lived in a hedge...I didn’t dream it! There was a gooseberry dragon Grin

MissClementine · 10/07/2020 15:36

Pete’s Dragon? Disney though but quite old.

Literallynoidea · 10/07/2020 15:39

OP I totally remember the books and can't for the life of me remember what they were called!

Were the dragons purple or am I making that up?

Will watch this thread with interest. Was a huge bookworm as a child and vividly remember this. Might ask my brother if he remembers them.

Alicenwonderland · 10/07/2020 15:47

Is it this?

TenShortStories · 10/07/2020 15:53

I like the sound of a gooseberry dragon... but no...

Not Pete's dragon, and the not the little counting book - thank you both though!

@literallynoidea Yes, purple! Well at least some of them were. I think there were a few different colours of dragon as I also remember green, and possibly pink. Ooh, I wonder if we're thinking of the same thing, fingers crossed!

Can you see my picture? Is it this book?
Alicenwonderland · 10/07/2020 15:57

This was a series of books from the 70s/80s.

TenShortStories · 10/07/2020 16:00

Not that one alicenwonderland, but a good shout - it fits the description well.

Ah, worth a try! I hope you find out, it's annoying when you can't remember!

Serendipity the Pink Dragon?

Creole by Stephan Cosgrove?

TenShortStories · 10/07/2020 16:17

Lots of new suggestions - thank you!

Serendipity, La Familie Dragon, and Creolé - unfortunately no for all of them.

there was a one they gave asthmatic dc called "you can do it Desmond Dragon"
he could run or blow fire until he started using his puffers Grin

rosegoldwatcher · 10/07/2020 16:26

Very much a longshot here:
In Ginn Key Comprehension Book 2 there is a short story extract about a young dragon who, as I recall, has a cold and as a result can't breathe fire. The extract is called Dragon Breath.

If anyone reading this has access to that book and can you please look at the name of the source book for the extract?

Einszwei · 10/07/2020 16:29

Were they part of a series for primary school children? I remember something very similar - the books were simplified, and helped children learn to read. One of the lower colour bands (maybe aimed at year one?).

HelenaJustina · 10/07/2020 16:35

These ones? Quite old but right era and same feel as Ahlberg.

TenShortStories · 10/07/2020 16:44

@mumwon I actually have an old copy of You Can Do It Desmond Dragon and it was revisiting that one that led me to think about 'that other dragon book I really liked'! It's exactly the right sort of thing - family of dragons wearing clothes and living as people - thanks Smile

TenShortStories · 10/07/2020 16:49

@Rosegoldwatcher I can't find what you're referring to easily but I'll have a bit more of a big around and see. Thanks
@Einszwei they could possibly have been banded reading type books. I remember the pictures and the feel of the story (so uselessly vague!) rather than how much text there was so it's really hard to say whether they could have been easy 'learn to read' books.

@HelenaJustina another good suggestion, but sadly no Sad
