I've just collected my wedding dress and I don't like it at all.

That, really... any advice?

I hated the idea of wedding dress shopping but took my best friend and fiancé's mum to try some on as they really wanted to. I found the whole thing awkward, not least because I was 2 stone heavier than I normally am and felt it was very obvious in the tiny shop dresses, but I found a dress that I liked more than the rest and they cried, so we bought it.

I've just seen it for the first time since October. It doesn't suit me at all. I've lost the 2st so it's too big, but it looks odd and wide. I don't look like me at all.

The original wedding was in a gorgeous little Manor House, so I got a dress that suited the room... it's got a long train, and is lace. We're now getting married in a tiny office room. I think it'll look really out of place.

It was already a lot more than I'd planned to pay, but doable. It's due to be fitted on Saturday so I think I'd have to pay for that anyway. The date is in a month, so no real time to lose more weight and see if that helps... There's nothing that I can do really, is there?

I feel really sad and deflated this afternoon!

@PainintheholeSIL. Sorry I thought you’d had to pay for two dresses!

The same thing happened to me, and more than 20 years later I still wish I'd been able to do something about it, so I would do what you can to change it. Having said that, on the actual day I felt beautiful and was caught up in the loveliness of everything, and when I look at the photos it is only with happiness.

PainintheholeSIL · 12/07/2020 19:44

@TowandaForever god no! I'd have been stuck with the first one in that case🤣🤣 I paid €500 extra to swap. Fair enough I thought as she had to try to sell my original one and it was a custom order.

I changed my mind on my wedding dress twice and ended up with a sample which I found about a month before the day.

Sorry @FunTimes2020 and everyone else - I have been reading and I'm very grateful for the advice! Work has been a bit manic.

I took the dress to the shop's seamstress on Saturday. She pinned it and she's going to adjust it by about 3 inches on either side, as well as take up the dress, but it didn't look great. It looks a bit like if you put a wedding dress on a bollard... Somehow it completely disguises any shape that I have.

I'm going back at the end of July to do stage two alterations, and I'm going to try and lose the remaining stone that I've been carrying before then... If it's awful then, I guess I'll try and sell it, and either go to Wed2B or get a long dress online. I've also got an ASOS wedding dress which should arrive today, so I can try that on and see if the shape is any better...

Thank you all for your comments Flowers

The back up dress has just arrived - it's an off-the-shelf dress, and nothing spectacularly different to what I'd normally wear, just glitzier. And I love it. I shook when I put it on. The 12 is too big and the 10 doesn't do up yet... I'm edging towards cancelling the alterations, selling the old dress, and keeping the 10 to wear.

I've sent a photo future MIL, who seems to like it... I'll need a good backless bra, but that should be okay to find!

Well, that's lovely news. Definitely try to sell your other dress and preferably before they don't alterations as that will cost you more and bring the price of the dress down.

Worstemailever · 13/07/2020 17:17

P.s. have just had a look at ASOS wedding dresses and they are so gorgeous!! Really beautiful!

LycraLovingLass · 14/07/2020 08:18

Can we see a pic of the Asos dress?

CucumberTree · 14/07/2020 22:56

Oh OP I want to see the dress that has made you smile!
