What non cartoon shows do your 8-10 year old boys watch

My boys seem to have outgrown cartoons. Don’t like ninjago or anything like that. My 8 year old has been watching some of the series on cbbc which I think are really aimed slightly older - secret life of boys, dumping ground, Jamie Johnson. etc. He is drawn to these sort of shows. But I feel he is too young for them with all the teenage angst. I would like to encourage more age appropriate tv. We recently discovered inbestigators. Just wondered if any other recommendations ?

My just 9 year old watches Operation Ouch pretty much all the time and a lot of history documentaries.

I'd rather have the teen angst on CBBC that the awful Youtube videos by spoilt Americans doing 'pranks'.

Blueberryham · 04/07/2020 13:49

Thanks. Yes I am aware that cbbc is probably not too bad quality in comparison with some stuff. Thankfully we have mostly avoided YouTube so far.

My 7 year old DD and 10 year old DS are both really enjoying Merlin (tbh so am I) which is currently on iPlayer.

You vs Wild on Netflix has gone down well here - it’s Bear Grylls having adventures but it’s interactive - he gets into different situations and you decide which option he should choose. It’s aimed at kids so age appropriate.

Ricekrispie22 · 04/07/2020 13:55

Horrible Histories
Dengineers
Art Ninja
Deadly 60
Operation Ouch
Bear Grylls Survival School
Spy School

Blueberryham · 04/07/2020 13:56

Thanks I will look in to these. Noble giraffe, is Merlin not scary at all ? I wondered about this but wasn’t sure. I quite fancy it as something to watch together

Merlin has mild peril and the odd off-screen execution (for magic use), sometimes DD has to cuddle up while watching but they are both quite sensitive kids (DS has stopped watching other films) and absolutely love it. Plenty of comedy moments and good values about friendship, loyalty and responsibility.

yellowfishestoyou · 04/07/2020 14:06

Henry Danger seems to be it in our house.

ExtremelyBoldSquirrels · 04/07/2020 14:12

DS (nearly 11) likes floor is lava.
Also anything ninja warrior/ultimate beastmaster/assault course based.

He also likes watching the mandelorian and marvels agents of shield (superhero nonsense generally goes down well) on disney+ and that Alex rider thing on amazon.

OohKittens · 04/07/2020 14:14

Creeped out on netflix is really good. Only season 1 is there so far.

BearSoFair · 04/07/2020 14:15

Deadly 60
Horrible Histories
Mythbusters repeats
A lot of nature documentaries! Usually on Eden, he loves Nigel Marven's top 10 deadliest snakes series especially.
A Series of Unfortunate Events on Netflix. First season more suitable than the second but we have let 10yo DS2 watch both and he was fine with it.

DeepSleepBathSoak · 04/07/2020 14:17

You Vs Wild
The Floor Is Lava
Sonetimes BBC documentaries eg about animals

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/07/2020 14:22

My DDs (7&9) like anything by Guy Martin, Top Gear/Grand Tour (more the challenges than the car stuff), most of the Red Bull channel (esp Cliff Diving and Ice Cross), Ski Sunday in the winter, Bake Off/Seeing Bee/Pottery Throwdown programmes... And their latest discovery a channel that shows Wipeout all day.

drspouse · 04/07/2020 14:22

Mine is quite young for 8 but likes Odd Squad and also liked Worzel Gummidge.
Sarah Jane Adventures is a hit (we have the DVDs).
On CBBC I'm afraid it is mainly cartoons but The Deep is a bit more grown up, as is Dragons.
I am currently hoping they don't spot The Floor Is Lava.
I think he'd like You Vs Wild.

drspouse · 04/07/2020 19:20

Just wanted to say THANK YOU for the recommendation of You vs Wild, DS just watched it, really engaged!

theneverendinglaundry · 04/07/2020 19:37

Mine really love Goosebumps on Netflix - the old 90s series rather than the movies. Like X Files for kids!

OhioOhioOhio · 04/07/2020 19:44

Pointless!

SandieCheeks · 04/07/2020 19:44

Dr Who, Floor is Lava, Horrible Histories. My almost 10 year old also loved The Mandalorian.

Not all cartoons are babyish - mine loves The Last Kids on Earth, Steven Universe, Adventure Time, Regular Show, The Simpsons.

TimeWastingButFun · 04/07/2020 19:51

Almost 10 YO: You vs Wild, Lemony Snickett, Charlie and the Choc Factory, anything David Williams, Horrible Histories.

june2007 · 04/07/2020 19:53

operation ouch, DEnginears, gym stars, Not on at mo but Juniour Master Chef.

Bugbeau · 04/07/2020 19:54

My 8yo loves horrible histories. Has recently really enjoyed the mandalorian and the floor is lava is also a new one he loves (and then re-enacts in the living room!) he likes The Inbestigators on Netflix & also likes Dengineers on CBBC.

APipkinOfPepper · 04/07/2020 19:56

In addition to the ones above, Wild and Weird, and All over the place

10brokengreenbottles · 04/07/2020 20:02

DS' will all watch
History documentaries - If your DC like history documentaries I would recommend The Back in Time series.
Horrible histories
I second Merlin

DS2 likes ninja warrior and various sports matches.

DS3 likes The Bake Off, pointless, tenable, countdown, mandalorian.

anxietrist · 04/07/2020 20:08

The floor is lava is great! One of the few things I'm happy to watch with my two.

heymammy · 04/07/2020 20:24

Ds, just turned 8, loves Little Lunch on Netflix, junior bake off, floor is lava, fort boyard and any quiz/game show. But mostly he watches YouTube tbh!
