What non cartoon shows do your 8-10 year old boys watch

My boys seem to have outgrown cartoons. Don’t like ninjago or anything like that. My 8 year old has been watching some of the series on cbbc which I think are really aimed slightly older - secret life of boys, dumping ground, Jamie Johnson. etc. He is drawn to these sort of shows. But I feel he is too young for them with all the teenage angst. I would like to encourage more age appropriate tv. We recently discovered inbestigators. Just wondered if any other recommendations ?

I came on to recommend the inbestigators, I love it! We are currently watching the Fresh Prince series with Will Smith - so old but still really funny, there's stuff about Will and girls I don't much like but it goes over the dc's heads. We all like A Series of unfortunate events.

I like the sound of you vs wild.
Ds2, 10, likes horrible histories, creeped out, the Mandalorian, Merlin is brilliant - we watched it obsessively when he was about 6 as he loved knights (and has an older brother, and has never been particularly sensitive to scary stuff). There was a great series on CBBC a while ago where sporty kids went to try various extreme sports around the world but I can't remember what it was called.

My almost 10 year old likes watching Colin Furze and DanTDM on YouTube - TV is boring apparently! (except for The amazing adventures of Gumball.)

mammmamia · 04/07/2020 20:41

And junior bake off

drspouse · 05/07/2020 10:35

Merlin also a hit! Grin

ThreeCubesBalancing · 05/07/2020 10:39

My 10 year old worked his way through every episode of Dr Who during lockdown and has now moved on to Merlin. He also likes Bake Off, Ninja Warrior, the Mandalorian.

Thanks for the You vs Wild recommendations - we've all thoroughly enjoyed it today (even the 14yo) and 10yo ds is loving making Bear Grylls do the most hideous options (eating bear poo...!)

Those of you whose kids enjoy ninja warrior etc, have you tried The Titan Games on Netflix? It’s presented by The Rock, it’s actually really good - very gladiators like!

xolotltezcatlopoca · 05/07/2020 20:40

My ds still loves watching cartoon at 12. His favorites are and One Piece

lifestooshort123 · 06/07/2020 14:48

River Monsters

GwenFromBudgens · 06/07/2020 15:12

Mine like Wolf Blood and Sparticle Mystery, both on iPlayer. Both have strong female protagonists, which I think is good for boys to see. Child acting much better in Wolf Blood, I find Sparticle Mystery quite painful, from that perspective!

BonosSigh · 07/07/2020 20:06

Thanks for some great suggestions. Trying to get my DSs off The Thundermans, Sam and Cat and other similar American pre teen drivel (channelling my mother here)

Equimum · 07/07/2020 20:13

Mine is 7.5, but he watches a lot of Blue Planet, Bear Grylls, Bake Off, Horrible Histories and a mature serious on National Geographic (sorry, can’t remember the name).

drspouse · 07/07/2020 20:58

I wish people hadn't suggested Henry Danger. DS loves it and I'm cringing.

yellowfishestoyou · 07/07/2020 21:03

Haha I make myself busy if my sons watch Henry Danger or I send them upstairs to watch it.

drspouse · 07/07/2020 21:35

It seems fairly harmless and age appropriate, and it's nice he's going for slightly older shows (he's watched every Octonauts 300x)

mammmamia · 07/07/2020 22:26

I agree about Henry danger. I posted it above but that didn’t mean I was recommending it haha.
It’s the most terrible show, I mean fairly harmless but I just can’t understand how they expect the audience to suspend disbelief to that extent. How can Henry’s family and friends not realise it’s him? Hmm

HavingAMoan · 07/07/2020 22:28

The floor is lava
Horrible histories (which I also watch because it’s hilarious)
Deadly 60

timtam23 · 07/07/2020 23:46

10 yr old...
Dengineers
Art Ninja
Ninja Warrior and all the spinoffs
Robot Wars
Tipping Point
Red Bull Soapbox Races
Sky at Night
Great Railway Journeys of the World (he absolutely loves looking at the scenery and any big viaducts!)

YummyBelicious · 08/07/2020 00:02

Oh I loooove Henry danger, I think it's so funny! I love the way captain man asks about the mum all the time!
