Boring question of the day: Do you clear away before or after eating?

So, let's pretend you've made yourself eggs on toast for lunch.

Do you leave the cooking things out whilst you eat and clear everything away after.

Or do you clear the cooking things before sitting down to eat?

Eat first otherwise the food is cold .

LoseLooseLucy · 03/07/2020 13:04

Afterwards. I'm hungry 🤷‍♀️

AnnieMaul · 03/07/2020 13:05

I try to clear things as i'm going along where possible.

I'd probably leave a pan on the side to cool whilst eating but put everything else in the sink or on the side after cooking/before eating. Then come back to the pan and come back to sort the rest after.

Bluntness100 · 03/07/2020 13:05

Before,,can’t stand mess.

Snigletted · 03/07/2020 13:05

I leave the cooking things out, but will run some water into them so whatever it is doesn't set. I don't cook so everyone else can eat hot food and I can clean and eat cold food!

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 03/07/2020 13:06

After eating, I don't want to eat it cold

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 03/07/2020 13:07

I would put the pan in soak

madcatladyforever · 03/07/2020 13:07

A week later usually

ZazieRosie · 03/07/2020 13:08

Clear as I cook, but won’t usually sacrifice hot food for the last few bits if it’s a dish that won’t hold heat well.

Lottieskeeper · 03/07/2020 13:08

I try to chuck things in a sink of hot water as I go so they can have a good soak while we're eating. We don't have a dishwasher if I did I'd probably chuck things in there.

FunTimes2020 · 03/07/2020 13:08

A bit of a both. We don't have a dish washer, when I'm cooking I usually have a bowl of hot soapy water in the sink and put utensils etc in there a long the way.

Wannabangbang · 03/07/2020 13:09

Afterwards or cold and manky

ginsparkles · 03/07/2020 13:10

If I am cooking I clear down as I go, If my husband is in charge of the kitchen I tackle the war zone after eating !

4amWitchingHour · 03/07/2020 13:11

Clear as I go along as much as possible, but very definitely do final clean up after eating - hot food and eating together way more important than tidiness! Don't put pots in to soak either as sudden temperature change can damage them.

LittlemissAWOL · 03/07/2020 13:12

I'll clear up what I can as I go but obviously after for most bits.

listsandbudgets · 03/07/2020 13:12

I usually put the saucepans to soak but otherwise afterwards better still I delegate it to someone else

MinesAPintOfTea · 03/07/2020 13:13

I thought you meant do you clear the previous meal away immediately before serving the next or straight after.

Needless to say I leave the pans until after we've eaten

Exactly the same here. First thing I do before I start cooking is run a bowl of hot water, then wash up as much as I can as I go along!
Letseatgrandma · 03/07/2020 13:20

I would clean up as I’m going along and put anything that couldn’t be, eg frying pan, into a bowl to soak whilst I ate.

I would always sweep toast/bread crumbs from the chopping board/kitchen surface outside before I ate though and it annoys me beyond belief when people I live with don’t do the same! I hate going into the kitchen and finding other people’s toast crumbs that I have to sweep away before I can start doing my lunch!!Grin

Iwantacookie · 03/07/2020 13:21

Depends while its cooking ide probably wipe down where I wasnt using and fill the sink etc if theres LOADS of washing up ide probably do it before I ate otherwise ide do it after.

AriettyHomily · 03/07/2020 13:27

Clear away ie put pan in sink, but not wash and if i can wash / put in dishwasher as I go.

Ginkypig · 03/07/2020 13:33

It depends on what I'm cooking. If I can do a bit as I'm going I will but if it's a quick meal that isn't always possible.

A pan of example cheese sauce will go in to soak because if you leave it it dries on and anything similar gets sorted before if it saves more work later but most things I'll leave until after basically because I want my food fresh and hot!

BogRollBOGOF · 03/07/2020 13:33

Some time later.
I can't cope with clean as you go. It distracts me from the food and messes up that order, then I'll probably find that I removed something I need again like a chopping board or knife.

For similar reasons I don't often tend to cook things like roasts or breakfasts that require a particular order and sense of timing in order to get all the food served fresh and hot.

I meant to add similar to my last post, il naturally sort choppings and crumbs etc as I go because I need the worktop space to plate up.
IwishIhadaMargarita · 03/07/2020 13:42

Leave it till I’ve finished eaten the put my plate in dishwasher and fill with everything else, dishwasher goes on after dinner and the worktops get cleaned.
