Eek! You might want to clean your wedding ring (gross pic)

I haven't taken my wedding ring off for years but did today ( idle twiddling) and it is revolting. I presume that's decades of soap scum and dead skin cells.

Found this if it helps.
Line small dish with foil. Add layer of salt, layer of bicarb of soda and some fairy liquid. Add hot water and soak ring for ten minutes. Scrub with old toothbrush. Dry and buff to new.

Mine won't come off 😭 it's not tight and moves freely around my finger but it won't go past my knuckle.
I recently lost the diamond from my enegamenet ring and had to take it off...with great difficulty. Couldn't believe how grubby it was.

CruCru · 29/06/2020 10:59

I have one of these. It's amazing how things look before and afterwards.

insancerre · 29/06/2020 11:17

I can’t get mine off either
I managed to get it off and it was on he mantelpiece and then I just decided I needed to see if it still fitted
So I put it back on and now it’s stuck
Blush

Do you not take jewelry off when washing hands or showering? Shock that can't be sanitary

OohThatCat · 29/06/2020 11:32

I take mine off and clean it with my engagement ring at least every two weeks!

mynameisntlouise · 29/06/2020 11:35

I used cleaning solution pot once which was supposedly safe for white gold and I swear it yelllowed my engagement ring!

Soapy water does the same job with a soft bristle scrubbing brush. I use the one that came with my solution set but I think a soft toothbrush would do the same.

I had it cleaned and re-dipped at the Jewellers and it looks amazing, for about a month, then it was dull again.

Speak for yourself, you scuzzy person Grin

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 29/06/2020 11:41

I have little arches in my engagement ring to make it a bit smaller. It's very satisfying to take a cocktail stick to them occasionally. I haven't work my rings since lockdown started as I was getting a rash under them from all the soap and handwashing so they are currently pristine.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 29/06/2020 12:03

Do people not clean their rings regularly? Mind mine are too big as I have lost weight so they come off very easily at the moment and I have barely worn them during lockdown. Sonic cleaners are fab - just make sure that if you have gemstones in jewellery they are ok to go in it as some can't. Use a toothbrush otherwise to clean behind/underneath it. If it turns around on your finger but doesn't come off then I would probably just try poking some bristles from a toothbrush down the inside of it to give it a good clean.

AuntieDolly · 29/06/2020 12:23

I boil mine in a saucepan with some washing up liquid and gently brush with a soft toothbrush.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 29/06/2020 12:29

Mine's a plain D section 18k. Hasn't been off for a decade, so occasionally I spray it with WD40 and then buff it with cornmeal. It still has a patina, but glows nicely.

scrivette · 29/06/2020 12:33

I can't take my engagement ring off but can slide it up to my knuckle so occasionally take off my wedding ring and move it up to give the skin a chance to breath a bit, so thank you for the reminder to do it (will clean wedding ring at the same time).

waltzingparrot · 29/06/2020 14:29

WD40 and cornmeal?- who'd have ever known

**Do people not clean their rings regularly? Clearly notGrin

Whilst talking about rings, I recommend you get any diamond ones you have valued if you haven't for awhile. I lost the diamond out my engagement ring before lockdown as the claw broke..very luckily found it on my kitchen floor. Just picked it up today after putting it in to get fixed and valued before lockdown and its more than doubled in value in the 12 years since I got it. So will need to change the value on the house insurance.

Nottobesoldseparately · 29/06/2020 15:37

The jeweller who made mine cleans and polishes mine for free as often as I want.

Unfortunately I'm a sad sack who doesn't like to take them off much so I only tend to do it once a year (and get DH to put my wedding ring back on).

Bmidreams · 29/06/2020 15:41

We haven't worn ours since the coronavirus outbreak. I normally take it off every night anyway, it feels so restrictive!

MillieMoodle · 29/06/2020 15:58

I can't take mine off any more, they're stuck. I put them back on when DS2 was a baby but then put on weight. I'm trying to lose the weight though, so when I've lost about a stone and am back down to the post-DS2 weight, I'll hopefully be able to remove them.

MamaDane · 29/06/2020 17:21

I don't think I'll ever wear a ring. Not since hearing about "finger degloving". 😳

CouldIBeAnymoreTired · 29/06/2020 17:30

MamaDane 🤮🤢 why?!?

UnaOfStormhold · 29/06/2020 17:35

My rings have been in the drawer since March sadly - too much hassle to wash under the rings each time I washed my hands.

KizzyWayfarer · 29/06/2020 17:41

I keep mine on all the time but it’s shiny and clean-looking on the inside (unlike the outside which is scuffed and a bit discoloured). It’s white gold.

SurreyHillsGirl · 01/07/2020 11:17

Wow, what a difference!

I take my wedding and engagement rings off every night and put them in the box they came in on my bedside table. I can’t sleep with them on plus I worry about them falling off during my morning shower, even tho they fit really well!

Allflightscancelled · 01/07/2020 11:35

Someone upthread BOILS their rings? What on earth for?
