Bastard Tupperware cupboard

I keep a fairly tight rein, but still the twatting tops and bottoms separate themselves, then the single interlopers (lids usually) move in when we’re out.
When they’ve gathered enough collective force they decide to throw themselves at my feet. Ejected from their home because I need a pot to store some baked beans in. They’ve figured that I need them more than they need me. Bastards.

Despair. I've tried both methods - storing them together, which resulted in the usual chaos, and storing the lids separately.
No one could ever find a matching lid.
So then I sharpied numbers on lid and box. That seemed to work for about 2 weeks, then they got wise to it, and began hiding.
No one could find any matching lids again.

Currently, I have one of those huge plastic storage crates in the bottom of the larder and just chuck them in, regardless. I am sure there's about 50 odd lids at the bottom, though.
I also have a small basket full of odd lids, which I have to keep, for the reason Hagisonthehill said.

@Ginnotgym please can we have a picture? I need to learn this about pan tops. I have a dividing thing for them from ikea and they still just fall everywhere.

TreeTopTim · 07/06/2020 07:51

I am an open the door, throw them in and quickly close the door type of person.

Ginnotgym · 07/06/2020 07:52

@marly11 so sorry - frustratingly I've tried 4 times and can't get the image to attach Confused

Will keep trying

ClientQ · 07/06/2020 10:54

@Aria20 eBay, they're not the cheapest but they don't hold smells or go orange etc!

Ginnotgym pic please, you should share your wisdom

Greenteandchives · 07/06/2020 12:45

My lids are arranged upright in an old toast rack, and the boxes stacked alongside inside each other where possible. .
I still have to ‘manage’ it regularly but it’s very satisfying when it’s done.

SoupDragon · 07/06/2020 12:45

Ikea have glass with plastic lids too. If you don't mind queueing for 5 miles to get in 😂

My Tupperware drawer is out of control. I've tried all methods - I think lids on boxes is the way to go but it does take up more space. At least box and lid are together though (I have lost souls of both lid and box. It makes no sense.)

Phalarope · 07/06/2020 12:49

We swapped to a Tupperware drawer. It’s still shit, but they don’t fall out on me so I no longer care.

Nospringchickendipper · 07/06/2020 13:40

I sorted my cupboard out at the beginning of lock down and now back to opening the door and throwing them in again method.
Do people still have Tupperware or do we just generally call all storage containers Tupperware.

GrumpyHoonMain · 07/06/2020 13:43

Get rid of all the lids and replace with stetchy silicone ones. They were a game changer for me

Puddlesplasher · 07/06/2020 13:46

No unaccompanied lids without their boxes.

Not understanding how pan lids become a problem though. Surely just store them with the lids on and problem solved.

Aria20 · 07/06/2020 13:48

@ClientQ found some on amazon too, so expensive if they get broken tho Confused but better if they don't stain and hold smells and better for the environment than keep replacing plastic ones.

Aria20 · 07/06/2020 13:49

@SoupDragon now that's a better price lol but def not desperate enough to queue for hours to get in, I shall wait patiently for the queues to die down and then make a trip!

BearSoFair · 07/06/2020 13:55

I tidied our tupperware cupboard last week, 2 pots with no lids, and 5 lids with no pot! Chucked them out, then two days later DH found 3 of their pots in a different cupboard that neither of us can recall ever using for tupperware. The fuckers move themselves, I'm sure of it Angry

DuckonaBike · 07/06/2020 13:58

Oh yes DelurkingAJ that sock mutation theory would completely explain the tupperware problem. It’s either that or a gap in the space time continuum.

Water bottles and pan lids are nearly as bad, tumbling out of the cupboard with a loud triumphant clatter every time I open it the little bastards.

Hagisonthehill · 07/06/2020 14:03

I have the Pyrex containers with lids too but they are in continuous use as I love the freezer to oven convenience.
But I am not brave enough to go Pyrex/glass to work.
Tupperware covers all plastic containers.
I have so many sizes depending on what DD and I have for packed lunches.Lots of small click ones for left over bits and pieces and for taking fruit to work in.
I have killed a few take away boxes microwaving and suspect some lids come from there and U have warped lids(again microwave) which I keep hoping will miraculously fit the container again.
I used to store boxes and lid seperatly as this takes up less room but ransacking through for the right sizes meant even more chaos. It has just arrived at throw in and hope for the best.

labazsisgoingmad · 07/06/2020 14:06

do they still have Tupperware parties? mum went to one and it was so expensive she came home with a flour scoop as that was the most reasonable thing to buy! thing is these days you can get equivalent much cheaper in the shops

BamboozledandBefuddled · 07/06/2020 14:14

I don't let mine have their own cupboard but keep a few (pot with lid) in each cupboard. It can take seconds longer to find the size I want but I'm no longer at risk of injury or death by avalanche. But a few days ago I found a pink lid lurking which doesn't fit anything I own and which I swear I have never set eyes on before Confused

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 07/06/2020 14:33

After a week of it piling up on the side (because the cupboard of doom was in avalanche mode) I have just resorted the cupboard. Yet, I know it's merely a temporary fix.

I'm short, so it's a stretch to put stuff in the upper cupboards anyway (they're normal height) so I tend to lob things at the shelves, which doesn't help.

I don't like storing them with the lids on as they take up far too much room and I feel they need to air, not be sealed up

I try stacking with lids to the side

I don't have a drawer or they'd be in there!!

I have culled, but then didn't have the size I needed.

Kitchen is tiny and I'm in the process (or 'was' anyway) if putting a new one in, but sadly will have less storage space, not more (losing top cupboards for full size fridge/freezer (replacing undercounter) And a narrow base unit for slimline dishwasher . My Old utility room was bigger than this kitchen & now no utility room! Unfortunately there's absolutely no way to make it bigger. Or any other layout. So it is what it is. (fucking frustrating! )

WithIcePlease · 07/06/2020 14:42

Aria20 they have them in Home Bargains too

I used lockdown to finally get ours sorted out. It's so pretty I open it and stare at it from time to time.

dudsville · 07/06/2020 20:31

We have a drawer here too. It's the only way to properly store those bastards.

InventedthePostIt · 07/06/2020 20:37

Double whammy in this house. We keep the pots and lids in the same cupboard as the bags for life. The bags help the pots get some real power and height when they spring out of the cupboard.
