How long did it take you to get over wanting another child??

I'm mid thirties with 2 school age children and there are so many reasons why another isn't on the cards.... but I just can't stop thinking about my imaginary third child and it's driving me crazy! If you felt like this, how long did it take you to get past it? I just want to get on with my life and stop thinking about it.

Following with interest.

I've got four, and absolutely definitively do not have the mental, physical or financial resources for more, but still ache every time I see a baby.

My mum said it faded once her children were teenagers and horrible Smile

Hmm well I’ve been feeling the same as you since we brought DS2 home 6 months ago (feel a bit guilty for that tbh, I adore him so I’m not wishing his babyhood away!).... it’s not faded yet...

monsterific · 01/06/2020 18:06

I have 3DC and was Got pregnant unexpectedly with number 4 which unfortunately turned into a MMC. My husband has only ever wanted 3 DC and has no desire to try again although I am still very much wanting another. Even though my D.C. are ages where it gets a little easier I can't stop looking and thinking I should be x amount of weeks pregnant with another, you should be a four. It's irrational I know and like you there are so many reasons to stick at three but my god this longing/broodiness for another is hard.

Sorry I know that doesn't answer your question just wanted you to know you're not alone.

zigaziga · 01/06/2020 18:08

I have 2 and am desperate for a 3rd. When my 2nd was born I just knew I wasn’t done.

I try not to think about how it will work with finances and space because otherwise we will definitely not do it Hmm which is obviously not the most sensible approach.

anxietrist · 01/06/2020 19:08

@monsterific I'm not surprised you feel that way after your loss, it must be so hard after thinking for a while they would be four.

I don’t think you do.

I’m about to give myself one last chance (albeit by myself Smile)

My mum said it faded once her children were teenagers and horrible

I've got a while then 😭

I never got over it by mid thirties so had another baby 🤣 still not over it at 42 but I know I won't be having another now. Doesn't stop me wanting one!

NoRoomInBed · 01/06/2020 19:15

I'd love a 4th. we dont feel complete but I know I would not be able to afford it. I'm only 27 so have a few years left 😉.

anxietrist · 01/06/2020 19:15

Really @fatalsecrets?? This is what I fantasise about and I browse donor websites in bed 😂

I didn’t get over it, and had more. Never regretted it for a second.

anxietrist · 01/06/2020 19:16

These are not the answers I was hoping for...

diddlediddle · 01/06/2020 19:18

You're all absolutely bonkers for wanting more than two 😂

EsmaeDe · 01/06/2020 19:19

I never got over it after my first born 18years ago. And then I met a man who completely knocked me off my feet and wanted more children. I’m now expecting number 7 and couldn’t be happier ! Although for a split second we will have 6 under 5 😱 I don’t think it ever goes away x

Healthyandhappy · 01/06/2020 19:26

anxietrist · 01/06/2020 20:15

My aunty has 6 kids and has said she wish she stopped at 2. Other 4 out of control her marriage failing everything wrong. She said she wished she had bought her kittens when she craved a baby
Xx

Healthyandhappy · 01/06/2020 20:18

Or a puppy (depending on work commitments ) puppies are more attentive but I'm more a cat person and kittens are fun x

anxietrist · 01/06/2020 20:19

I would love to have both a dog and a cat but waiting until I'm single 😁

I stopped feeling broody when my youngest was around 4yo. Before that I'd definitely have had another if DH had agreed! I did genuinely get over the feelings, and reached the point where I'd be gutted about a positive pregnancy test.

Healthyandhappy · 01/06/2020 20:30

I got sterilised when youngest at 26 when youngest was 18 month old. I have a 5 yr old dd and 10 yr old dd. I wanted 2and to keep 1st occupied if u have 3 u need 4 to even it out lol

BraeburnMia · 01/06/2020 21:04

We also have 2 primary aged children. Last year I was really broody, but my husband didn't want us to have anymore children. We had always said we'd have 3.
His reasons were valid. I have a type of non cancerous brain tumour, a bad back which was severely damaged after a fall and fibroids and a heart shaped womb. Added together, I knew he was right that my body couldn't get put under any more pressure of pregnancy and labour, and for a while I sort of grieved that baby number 3 wouldn't ever happen. It took me a while to accept my lot in life.
Then one day, I realised I didn't need the 3rd baby. I have 2 beautiful, perfect and healthy children. My brain tumour is being monitored and doesn't need operating on and I have adapted to how my back is since the accident. I have a lot to be thankful for especially as the first prognosis was I might not live to see my eldest grow up.

I went to hell and back and I am still here. I have the most amazing husband who has been there every step of the way and his words have hit home and I don't even think about baby number 3 anymore. Our family is complete and I am here to be part of it. I get to enjoy watching my children grow up and they make me stay strong. I want to be here for a very long time.
As my husband said he would rather have 2 children and his wife then have 3 children and be on his own. In our case, it was black and white. Another baby couldn't happen.
On a plus side, I am about to become an auntie though for the first time so I get to still get the cuddles and none of the risks to me. I get to buy loads of baby things and spoil my nephew or niece.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 01/06/2020 21:09

I really wanted two and thought about 3, but I am pregnant with no 2 now and I am pretty sure if all goes to plan I will be done after this. Three sounds great in principle but I really don't feel that I could do another first trimester Grin
