If you're a size 18+ what would you wear up top to go running? Don't like feeling uncovered...

But it's bloody hot.

Want to start couch to 5k

Have gym leggings but need something to cover up top half

Good strong sports bra, vest. Good luck!

flabbyflabbyflabguts · 29/05/2020 11:47

You could get a sweat wicking sports t shirt, which has panels in it.
Or you could wear a normal t shirt to start, you'll be walking/jogging to begin with, and will be fine

flabbyflabbyflabguts · 29/05/2020 11:48

I used to see a woman out walking jogging who did it in a long t shirt and ordinary leggings with her running trainers on
Just make sure you get a good sports bra

I try to go early morning or evening so it’s cooler! And yes, just a bra and vest.

Don’t worry about covering up or what anyone else thinks. Fuck em.

Lhigg · 29/05/2020 12:06

I can't wear a vest. I'm huge. 16st

Id look like Mr blobby :(

I just wear a big t-shirt! My favourite one is an emma Willis one from next that ties in a knot at the side.

pinkpolo · 29/05/2020 12:10

I wear a Nike sports t shirt - the whole back of it is mesh so really light. Good sports bra underneath, and cropped sport leggings.

In this weather, I only run first thing in the morning or 9pm at night. Definitely won't run in the heat or sun, I hate it!

Monkeyseesmonkeydoesnt · 29/05/2020 12:13

Short sleeve wicking material t-shirt. Try not to worry what you look like, whats important is that youre making positive steps to feel better. I always buy 2 sizes bigger so it doesn't cling or ride up

Stopthehop · 29/05/2020 12:13

I wear a sports bra and sports t-shirt. I go early before it gets too hot.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 29/05/2020 12:15

sports bra, vest, T shirt

AngusThermopyle · 29/05/2020 12:16

Wear a big shirt or i know that Nike do large plus size t shirts that are very loose and baggy.

CalmConfident · 29/05/2020 12:17

Runners of all shapes and sizes out at the moment. Do not worry, get out there :)

Good sports bra is the most essential thing. A thin normal t shirt fine (if you have a white good it’s good as does not show sweaty patches) to start, then as PP said get a short sleeve wicking t shirt sports material - lots of good ones out there - like the sound of the one with the mesh back

CalmConfident · 29/05/2020 12:18

And join one of the couch to 5k thread on here - lots of supportive lovely people to encourage you Smile

Lisette1940 · 29/05/2020 12:22

I'm size 18 and am on my second week of running. Not quite fit enough to start couch to 5K so just run/walking as much as I can, three times per week.

I'm wearing marks and spencer wide trousers with elastic waist, sports bra (panache non wired) and whatever t shirt I have to hand. My 11 year old ds is running with me for company. We are doing trail running and grass running so I'm wearing a good pair of trail running shoes. Just keep going out and don't mind what you wear as long as you have a supportive bra and a decent pair of shoes.

Go you OP! I'm enjoying the endorphin buzz.

Kazplus2 · 29/05/2020 12:22

You can get extremely light long sleeve running tops from Next (and sweaty Betty if you want to go £££). I mostly run in long sleeves as I want some protection from the sun.

Lhigg · 29/05/2020 12:32

I wish primark was open :(

OP posts:
jaggynettle · 29/05/2020 12:36

Primark's exercise gear comes up really small. When I do aeorobics I wear a men's size top from Nike. It's make of breathable fabric. Lots of the ladies in my class are bigger than a size 20 and they wear vests and don't give a hoot.

Tulip100 · 29/05/2020 12:46

Try a normal slightly over sized cotton t-shirt I’d say

jingscrivvens · 29/05/2020 13:02

I'm 18st(and the rest) and wear a vest or technical type t-shirt depending on how hot it is. I love shock absorber bras and they keep me in check (38FF). I tend to buy things out of aldi when they have their special offers on, I buy the men leggings they usually have an XL or XXL and thet tend to have a drawstring, and tops out of the supermarket, they go up to 20 or 22 so there is a choice. In this weather I can't wear long sleeves, I sweat it up when it's freezing, nevermind in 20+ degrees...
But all you really need is a good sports bra and good running shoes, everything else doesn't matter. Once you're out there I find I don't give a toss what anyone thinks about how I look, at least I'm out doing something.
And good luck! Couch to 5K is hard, I felt like I was going to die most of the time and didn't believe I could get through it but I did and so glad I stuck with it.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/05/2020 13:09

@Lhigg, I totally understand that you feel self-conscious at the moment but I'm a few years further down the road here than you. I used to expect people would look at me in horror if I wore form-fitting sports gear and had bare arms, now (a) I don't think they do and (b) I don't care Grin! However, the key thing for you now is to feel OK about getting out there and having a go, so wear whatever makes you feel comfortable. The sports bra is absolutely key. Keeps everything nicely in place. Mine came from M&S. Very heavy duty, wash well, have lasted. I'm not that huge on top (38D) but the ones that look like normal thin crop tops wouldn't do the job for me.

Hope it goes well. I'll never be fast but I'm so much stronger, fitter and healthier than I was before I started doing parkrun a few years back (in my mid 50s). I recommend that when they're able to start up again as it's very welcoming and unjudgemental.

Elouera · 29/05/2020 13:13

I'd wear the same as size 18 or 8. I'd wear shorts and a T-shirt, with a supportive sports bra underneath.

I personally don't wear leggings out of the house, but that is me.

pennysays · 29/05/2020 13:19

I wear a massive cotton t shirt. I always have whether I was a 16 or a 6. I just much prefer having loose cool cotton on

Iwalkinmyclothing · 29/05/2020 13:22

I used to wear two bras and an oversized cheap thin T shirt and just accept that I was going to end the run looking like a giant red ball of sweaty mess.

I don't know why I am saying 'used to', I still wear two bras and an giant cheap T shirt and end every run a giant red ball of sweaty mess

LeoTimmyandVi · 29/05/2020 13:55

I’m a not dissimilar size and just finished week 1. I agree, early morning running is best for me, I can’t do daytime heat and running.

I wear running leggings, sports bra and vest top- I thought I would feel awful (I have poor self esteem issues) but actually I couldn’t care less! Headphone on, music playing and just let people think what they like!

Good luck!

Eckhart · 29/05/2020 14:00

I know a woman who runs supporting her breasts in the crook of her elbows. Wearing 2 bras at once is a thing too.

6am is beautiful at the moment, OP, if you don't feel like having people seeing you while you run. Personally, if I saw you running, I'd just think 'Yay! Another person joining the runners of the world!'

Good luck, and stick at it. You won't regret it.
