would you say a jacket potato is a bit lunch? Just trying to consider my ideas of normal amounts to eat!

Nope. Either beans and cheese or tuna mayo and a bit of salad, fine for a lunch.

SinglePringle · 17/05/2020 15:18

It is for me. I’d not want a ‘normal’ sized dinner if I had a jacket potato for lunch. They really fill me and also make me very sleepy.

Time2change2 · 17/05/2020 15:18

Depends on how big the potato is- some jackets are huge!! A small potato for me would be a medium sized lunch with some salad on the side. I wouldn’t consider that healthy from a weight point if view though. A healthy lunch for me is chicken or fish with salad no carbs.

Sparklingbrook · 17/05/2020 15:18

Unless the jacket potato is the size of your head it's not a big lunch. Grin I want one now.

LochJessMonster · 17/05/2020 15:19

It’s a lunch, but on the large side, as apposed to a sandwich or salad.

It’s fine as a lunch but should fill you up more than a sandwich.

ThatsWhatHeroesDo · 17/05/2020 15:20

Depends on the size of the potato and the amount of fillings surely? Tiny little potato, teaspoon of beans, sprinkling of cheese - small lunch. Massive potato the size of your head, full tin of beans, half a block of cheese, huge lunch.

Is a jacket potato a big lunch?
bluefoxmug · 17/05/2020 15:20

depends on the size and the filling.
a small one with beans & salad is a small lunch a bigger one with chilli&cheese not

SummerHouse · 17/05/2020 15:20

They vary massively in size but the potato itself is not a big lunch. It's what you put on it that might make it big.

redbigbananafeet · 17/05/2020 15:20

It's an evening meal

VettiyaIruken · 17/05/2020 15:20

Depends how big it is and what fillings if any.

Mrsrexxx · 17/05/2020 15:20

Depends on the size!
Also why does it matter what’s big or small? Eat what you like, enjoy!

Unshriven · 17/05/2020 15:20

Oh God - I remembre a post on here about someone having the nerve to want a roast dinner after having a jacket spud for lunch Shock Grin .

I wouldn't say a potato was a big lunch, just an ordinary one.

KellyHall · 17/05/2020 15:20

It depends on:

  • how busy your day is
  • how big the potato is
  • what you put on/have with the potato
Flippinfurloughed · 17/05/2020 15:21

I see it as a normal lunch - I would def have a main mea for my supper if I had one for lunch.

Rightbutno · 17/05/2020 15:21

OP I'm not sure how great this will go. There's loads of competitive under eating on mumsnet. As per the above comments; I couldn't eat a normal evening meal after a jacket potato lunch and it has too many carbs. So I'm really not sure you'll get a picture of what is normal. It's fine for lunch.

Not everyone avoids carbs. BTW

summeriscoming20 · 17/05/2020 15:22

It would be a big lunch for me so I would have a smaller dinner

Rightbutno · 17/05/2020 15:22

Haha @Unshriven I remember that post! That's the sort of thing I'm talking about.

ThatsWhatHeroesDo · 17/05/2020 15:24

A tuna mayo jacket potato from Wetherspoons has 200 calories less than a tuna melt panini, according to their menu.

YenniferOfVengeberg · 17/05/2020 15:27

@ThatsWhatHeroesDo did you actually mean a teaspoon of beans? Surely that's not worth opening the tin for

TerrapinStation · 17/05/2020 15:27

Let me measure my piece of string before I answer.

How can anyone tell you?, there's no set potato size, no set type of filling, no set amout of filling and no set measure for what a big meal is.

Winegumaddict · 17/05/2020 15:29

I think it massively depends, size of potato, filling, what you do in a day. I consider a jacket potato a main meal so wouldn't have dinner afterwards but I find potato really really fills me up unlike other carbs. I'm not one to undereat either 😂 but if you don't find potato as filling it wouldn't be such a big meal.

Merigoround · 17/05/2020 15:31

The pictorial guide above gives a good idea of portion size . I would probably have a medium from that guide and have tuna mayo or cheese with it. And I would have proper tea later in the day thank you very much !
I remember seeing a secret eaters programme where one woman was trying to lose weight by only having a baked potato every day for her lunch. Couldnt work out why it wasnt working.
When the programme checked it out , the baked potato was a large one with butter first then a whole tin of beans plus a huge amount of cheese on the top . So not 'just' a baked potato then.

Ruddle91 · 17/05/2020 15:33

I'm GF and my go to is a potato with beans or with tuna mayo

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 17/05/2020 15:34

No it is not! A potato with beans/cheese/tuna and S some salad is fine

However in true mumsnet fashion the ones with food issues will be along in a minute, telling you it is as they live on dust, too carby or too sugary etc etc 🙄

merryhouse · 17/05/2020 15:37

how big is the potato
what do you put on it
what and how much do you have for breakfast
do you have morning snacks
do you have afternoon snacks
what and how much would you eat for a standard tea dinner evening meal
do you have snacks after your last meal
do you have tea or coffee with milk or sugar
do you drink sugary soft drinks
do you drink alcohol
