would you say a jacket potato is a bit lunch? Just trying to consider my ideas of normal amounts to eat!

@vanillandhoney that’s great thank you! The kids love it too so we’ll watch together later.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/05/2020 17:15

It’s a lunch, but on the large side, as apposed to a sandwich or salad

How do you work that out, a baked potato plus toppings could easily have fewer calories than a sandwich.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/05/2020 17:18

Also depends what you eat the rest of the day. If you don't really eat breakfast, you could still have a decent sized potato with toppings and not overeat. There is no normal, just do what suits you. Unless the potato is massive with loads of toppings, it's unlikely to be 'too much' for a normal meal.

A large potato with loads of tuna and mayonnaise would be a big lunch and not that healthy. A smaller potato with no butter, baked beans and a small amount of cheese would be small to normal.

@BarbaraofSeville exactly. Wetherspoons jacket potato and beans, 500ish calories. Pret a manger Italian salad, 614 calories. Mind you the Italian salad is very nice.

That would be my main meal and I would have something lighter in the evening.

DamnYankee · 17/05/2020 17:30

I couldn't eat a normal evening meal after a jacket potato lunch and it has too many carbs...I'd be wanting a nap 20 minutes later.

PurpleDaisies · 17/05/2020 17:36

If I smell a jacket potato from three feet away I instantly put three stone on and don’t need to eat for three days.

Bluntness100 · 17/05/2020 17:38

This question is so subjective, for some it’s normal, for others it’s too big, and others again it’s too small and they’d eat even more stuff after it. Everyone differs,

The potato itself is not the issue, it’s what you put on it. And how much of it you put on it. In addition as others have said, they vary massively in terms of size.

More than that though, everyone’s actively levels and general appetites vary. Some people eat a lot more than they physically need, some folks under eat and some folks eat the right amount. Some folks don’t move much, some folks are moderat active and some folks are very physically active.

So you’re not going to have any decent singular answer here op.

For a moderately active person, who was a healthy weight, who didn’t snack between meals, and who ate a mid sized baked potato with a small healthy topping on it, then it would likely be the right sized lunch.

But as said, for everyone else it’s shades of grey, there is no one answer.

When I was 25 I'd sometimes have a massive baked potato for lunch, with loads of toppings. Never put on weight. Now I'm my 50s and couldn't do that on a regular basis.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/05/2020 17:41

All the paninis and wraps except one on the Wetherspoons menu (other food suppliers are available including home made, but the point still stands) have around 6-700 calories and probably more carbs than a potato, which has 370 to 550 calories with toppings.

Do the people who can't eat for a week after such a 'heavy meal' feel the same about sandwiches?

lastqueenofscotland · 17/05/2020 18:16

Secret eaters is also all on Prime at the moment too

Ninkanink · 17/05/2020 18:18

Depends on the size of the potato and what filling, as others have said.

mencken · 17/05/2020 19:04

this is one of those 'is size 14 fat' or is '35 old' threads that seem to be inevitable on a forum aimed at women...

alwayskissmegoodnight · 17/05/2020 21:15

I'd have a jacket potato for lunch with fillings etc and then have cooked dinner later on easily.
