Dh turns thirty ten in lockdown! Ideas to make it special

My dh is lovely. We were meant to be taking the holiday of a lifetime to the Caribbean to celebrate his 40th birthday in May. I feel really sad that not only will we have to miss the holiday, we'll also miss seeing friends and family, and can't even book a table for a nice dinner or a hotel break.

Please help me think of ways to make the day special. Gift wise he is into gadgets and I usually buy him experiences like concert tickets or tickets for sporting events (obvs not an option currently).

My budget is up to £500.

Does he play any sports? Cycle? What kind of gadgets does he have already?

Namechangervaver · 26/04/2020 13:31

A watch?

tobermoryisthebestwomble · 26/04/2020 13:31

He plays football and golf. He has a mountain bike but doesn't use it loads.

He has decent phone, iPad, xbox, Fitbit, 4k TV (I can't tell the difference!) and decent soundbar, amazon echoes across the house.

He likes working out and is missing the gym, but we don't have space for a gym set up.

Thirty ten?

rottiemum88 · 26/04/2020 14:03

Does he have a turbo trainer for the bike? Basically turns it into an exercise bike to use at home if/when he can't get out for rides. They vary massively in price depending on which one you get, DH recently spent about £1200 on one, but there seem to be decent ones only for £300ish

@WhenItIsOver it's a joke for people who don't want to admit they're turning forty. It's a way of pretending they're still in their 30s.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 26/04/2020 14:06

I got distracted by thirty ten as well! What on earth is that about?

Do you have a garden? Is there any outdoor exercise equipment available?

lastqueenofscotland · 26/04/2020 14:19

Zwift seems to be the thing for all my cycling mates.

Oh, right. Not heard it before.

A lot of places are doing meals for delivery, including some gastro pubs, afternoon teas etc depending on area.

Maybe you could arrange that and set up the table extra special to feel like a restaurant?

tobermoryisthebestwomble · 26/04/2020 17:57

Thanks. He is turning thirty ten this year so we can hopefully have the proper 40th holiday next year!

Great idea about getting a restaurant delivery to make the day special @summergarden I will look into Zwift (must admit I've never heard of this) and the turbo trainer

Thirty Ten???? Hmm
How odd.

circusintown · 26/04/2020 18:05

Thirty ten 😂 heard it all now. No wonder this country is going to the dogs

circusintown · 26/04/2020 18:06

Oh, sorry. Didn't answer question. Erm...bring the Caribbean to him? Chuck some sand around, make pina coladas, stick on some beach tunes, bikinis and ramp the heating up full whack?

JudgeRindersMinder · 26/04/2020 18:07

Lighten up people, dh referred to turning twenty ten years ago, he’s twenty thirty five now!😂

tobermoryisthebestwomble · 26/04/2020 18:10

Tbf my husband is French, so when he is seventy he'll be sixty ten, and when he's eighty he'll be four twenties Wink

I've planned a garden movie night for my DP's birthday. He doesn't know I have got a fire pit, projector and screen on order from Amazon. Will also be putting hot dogs/popcorn/chips etc. In my next shopping trip. Lots of cushions/blankets/Bluetooth headphones and fairy lights dug out from the loft. Few beers in the cooler from the camping set Grin

HotGlueGun · 26/04/2020 18:13

Thirty ten????? Seriously?

Page3 · 26/04/2020 18:13

Thirty tenheard it all now. No wonder this country is going to the dogs

What does that mean?

circusintown · 26/04/2020 18:15

Joking page, it's just a saying Grin

lanbro · 26/04/2020 18:17

It's my 30 10th (Grin) on Tuesday, I'm currently living with xh temporarily to make it easier for the kids...I'm secretly hoping they've planned something nice for me but we'll see! I too had a special holiday planned, was due a solo trip to south east Asia on friday😭

I've definitely got several houseparty/skype calls planned but I'm saving all my celebrations til I can do something great. Could you plan a meal where you dress up, order from a restaurant, zoom your friends in with your laptop on the table?

tobermoryisthebestwomble · 26/04/2020 18:18

Thanks for your idea @Undomesticgodde55 that sounds fab! What will you project onto, if that's not too daft a question? We have bifold doors all across the back of the house, and only a bit of brick and fence. The rest is all wilderness so I'm not sure that would work for us!
