I don't know what it is but it looks scary!

Can anyone identify this?

Either a cave spider or a false widow. Which one looks closest?

While you’ve got the spider experts here, does anyone know what this it?

I can’t either! Have you read the description of each? Size etc. I think the false widow legs are longer than the cave spider

mnahmnah · 08/04/2020 19:01

@Twooter

I know nothing about spiders! I just love a good research challenge. Geeky like that Grin

Witching · 08/04/2020 19:03

I'd say it's a cave spider. Mean looking but pretty harmless.

Aardvarkitsabloodyaardvark · 08/04/2020 19:03

I thought false widows were black to be honest. Ive seen a few and so far all black.

mnahmnah · 08/04/2020 19:04

Another option @WhyNotMe40

You need a 'pet' harvestman spider, as they eat all the other spiders.
Apparently they're also one of the few spiders that actually look after their young rather than let them fend for themselves.
I've got a harvestman living in the hallway & touch wood haven't seen any other spiders in at least a year.
I call her Stephanie Grin
She did have a boyfriend as I ahem saw them being romantic Shock but I think he's wandered off or she had a post coital snack.

I had one false widow take up residence in my kitchen window for TWO years. I only realised it was there because there were very few flies about in the summer. Then last year another one took up residence near my front door. They've both gone now, thank fuck
I dont think your spider is a false widow

BlueGheko · 08/04/2020 19:50

Oh god, so it was a false widow in my bath this morning looking at those pics, it was frigging massive, as in too big to put glass over. Yesterday I woke up to a giant bumble bee in my bedroom. The insects are gonna take over whilst we're all on lock down Shock.

Foldinglaundryisnotforme · 08/04/2020 20:00

@Twooter it's a lace webbed spider

OP yours is a rabbit hutch false widow. Harmless

WhyNotMe40 · 08/04/2020 20:04

Ooh yeah, that's it! Thanks!

MistyIsland · 08/04/2020 20:08

Looks like a lace web to me but I’m no expert I just like to google spiders 🕷

False widows have a much more prominent skull on their backs, they are very pretty and have such a bad rep

Foldinglaundryisnotforme · 08/04/2020 20:21

There are several types of false widow spiders but the skull one seems to be the most well known. Uk safari is a fab site for identification of every species of animal insect etc in Britain.

Bobkitten · 08/04/2020 20:32

For all you spider experts, anyone want to hazard a guess on this one? Grin
