Excersise on you tube for unfit and depressed

CuntyBumpkin · 07/04/2020 20:38

If I ever ask for suggestions in RL I get told to do couch to 5k or a hitt class. I am extremely unfit and suffer with depression. The idea of getting up and doing any activity scares me but I know it will help.

Can anyone recommend an exercise class that's low impact and for someone unfit?

Google Leslie Sansone. She does walking ones of different lengths. Bit cheesy but good for starting.

MrsJonesAndMe · 07/04/2020 20:41

Yoga with Adrienne - she always shows modifications so you can do it regardless of how flexible you are.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/04/2020 20:43

Yoga or Pilates.

Would you go for a walk? I'm just back and it was just getting dark, my point is nobody is around so you may feel less self conscious.

Redcrayons · 07/04/2020 20:46

Yoga with Adrienne is good. I did her 30 day challenge called Home in January.
She’s really lovely, the videos are very Calming and relaxing. It gets progressively harder, but you very much go at your own pace.

Also are you able to go outside for exercise? A brisk walk in the sunshine might lift you a little. go really early when there’s hardly anyone about to avoid stressing about the 2m distancing rules.

Bluebooby · 07/04/2020 20:48

Joe wicks? A walk out doors each day would do you good if you're feeling depressed too.

Laurendelight · 07/04/2020 20:50

I’ve just looked at walk at home with Leslie sanson and I think it looks fun. I normally walk outside but dodging idiots is not fun. I heard the presenter on magic talking about it and thought I’d give it a go. That said it’s been a week and I’ve only looked today!

SybilWrites · 07/04/2020 21:10

yoga with Adriene is lovely. Very uplifting and calm.

puds11 · 07/04/2020 21:13

Yoga with Adrienne is great. I’ve just started beginners barre on YouTube which is no impact and really enjoyable. You can make it as hard or as easy as you like.

LaneBoy · 07/04/2020 21:16

The Leslie Sansone ones, are they walking literally on the spot or walking like “around the living room” type thing?

Yoga with Adrienne is lovely I agree.

Also I know you don’t mention weight OP but if anyone here reading is (like me) high BMI etc, search things like “yoga for bigger bodies” brings up stuff that is less intimidating if you’re new to it. It was really helpful for me.

Also a channel called Fitness Blender - again add extra search terms like “low impact” to bring up stuff that isn’t out of reach

jjejj · 07/04/2020 21:25

I like Jessica smith (YouTube) does loads of walking ones plus a million other stuff like HIIT and toning stuff which you can build up to. Goes from 10 minute workouts to 40 minute ones. Lots to choose from

CuntyBumpkin · 07/04/2020 21:39

Thank you so much everyone. I'll take a look at all of your suggestions.

I try and get out and walk but I have severe IBS. I get stressed not being near a toilet. I went for a walk the other day and I spent half of it so miserable and in pain.

My BMI is high so thank you for that LaneBoy I'll definitely do that, I didn't think of searching that way.

Yoga with Adrienne, I tried a beginners one the other day and it wasn’t as easy as I expected. Don’t worry if you can’t do everything at first.

FoolsAssassin · 07/04/2020 21:55

Laneboy pretty much on the spot. Side to side and backwards and forwards from memory.

MagpieWife · 07/04/2020 22:05

Please try Yoga with Adrienne - and let us know how you got on!

I think the stillness and calmness of yoga helps with depression, as well as the endorphins or whatever. I hope you find it helpful.

Iwouldrathernot · 07/04/2020 22:18
this is really good, only 7 minutes!
Menopauseandteensdontmix100 · 07/04/2020 22:24

I am very unfit and overweight and loved Tyson Furys warm up at 9am on instagram. I couldnt manage the full workout. I could only manage the warm up, going out fir a walk in the sunshine, or my own personal favourite dancing round the house freestyle for short bursts of fast random music, i also found a 5 minute meditation on you tube (to help you relax) and i did a chair work out last week for my arms on the Steph Show.

Menopauseandteensdontmix100 · 07/04/2020 22:25

Oti Mabuse does dance themed once on FB live.
Take care OP.

Ginkypig · 07/04/2020 22:33

Thanks for starting this thread op. Lots of people on here will feel exactly the same as you but won't have been brave enough to post (like me) so they will quietly look on this thread and feel maybe they can follow along without anyone "knowing" about them.

Good luck I will be watching this thread and hopefully like you can get something good out of it!

Ihavechangedmyname2manytimes · 07/04/2020 23:06

If you have kids, do PE with Joe Wicks on youtube. I am very unfit, but started doing it every morning with DCs and now I am looking forward to it. It is FUN! Try it even if you don't have kids!

DeeCeeCherry · 08/04/2020 02:28

As well as the great suggestions from pp's, can you also take vitamin D3 supplements OP? As you don't go out much you're likely deficient. D3 is good for overall mental and physical wellbeing, motivation, muscle strength, weight loss, and so many other things.

Good luck

Google Leslie Sansone. She does walking ones of different lengths. Bit cheesy but good for starting.

Definitely try this. On YouTube it's Walk at Home with Leslie Sansonne. 100% cheesy and American but they are all so peppy and upbeat and encouraging that it makes you feel a tiny bit like you can actually do this.

The movements are mostly restricted to a small floor area, it's walking on the spot with additional moves like kicks and mini squats etc. You can start with just a ten minute session and if you like it, do a longer one. I think the longest free videos without subscribing are about 45 mins.

MushroomTree · 08/04/2020 07:20

@puds11 do you need a barre or improvised barre for this one? I've been wanting to try barre classes for ages but obviously under current circumstances I'll have to do it at home.

Also, have you got a link?

puds11 · 08/04/2020 07:25

@MushroomTree I just used a chair. You could use the side of the couch or a table, you just need to have space behind to extend you leg. It’s a very straight forward routine but a good introduction to it I think. Enjoy Smile

Oblomov20 · 08/04/2020 07:32

I am not keen on Joe Wicks, I find him too 'full-on'. Personality wise.

But even if you like him, suggesting that somebody who doesn't normally do exercise can do him is just mad.

He is high intensity. most of my mum friends have been in absolute physical pain on day 2,3 and 4 of doing his recent exercises.

I think OP was asking for something a bit more genteel!
