Excersise on you tube for unfit and depressed

If I ever ask for suggestions in RL I get told to do couch to 5k or a hitt class. I am extremely unfit and suffer with depression. The idea of getting up and doing any activity scares me but I know it will help.

Can anyone recommend an exercise class that's low impact and for someone unfit?

Thanks @puds11. That's just what I'm looking for Smile

Great thread OP. I can't face the HIIT or C25K stuff either.

I know this is bonkers but I’ve been doing the exercise routines with songs that are aimed at young children - they’re easy, fun, and not too difficult if you’re very unfit! I figure it’s better to start somewhere. So eg go noodle videos (you tube), cosmic yoga, learning station.
Disclaimer - I started doing them with DCs but am enjoying them myself.

Not bonkers at all 8by8! If it’s fun and it gets you moving then why the hell not :) mind you I draw the line at my mum’s baby shark exercise routine :o

CuntyBumpkin Nothng winds me up more on these types of threads when the OP comes on and says, I haven't exercised for years or I'm extremely overweight or I don't really know where to start and then you get a thread full of people recommending Jillian Michaels or Joe Wicks or similar. That really isn't helpful. You'll end up, injured, intimitated and knackered and end up giving up.

There are lots of good instructors on YouTube who offer gentle exercise classes that will get you fit in a suprisingly short amount of time. Search Walking Fitness, Beginners Fitness or Overweight Fitness for low impact routines. Leslie Sansone, Up to The Beat and Joanna Soh are very good, but there are many other really good routines on there too.

Yoga is very good for strength, flexibility and relaxation. I like Yoga with Adriene and Sarah Beth Yoga .

Oblomov20 I find his personality a bit full on too (though he seems a nice guy). Exercise wise I just do what I can. I don't usually do the entire routine and do it more like every other day than every day. Also he usually seems to usually do a less intense and a more intense option for most of his exercises. I like that it's in the privacy of my own home. I feel like I sound like I work for his publicity team now so I'm going to stop talking.

Exactly this, I'm ridiculously fit, love exercise but the point is to get people involved who don't love it, who are self conscious and overweight, recommending hardcore hiit workouts is likely to end up with everyone feeling discouraged and never trying again....not exactly a win is it?

BogRollBOGOF · 08/04/2020 12:39

I'm fit, half-marathon fit. I'm staying away from the likes of Joe Wicks as I have an irritating history of getting minor muscle injuries from that type of workout. Studios have sprung floors, and leaping around doing high impact moves is higher risk on the range of typical domestic flooring.

I'd recommend Yoga with Adriene. It's not energetic, but gently builds strength which will make other options more accessible with time. I'm hopelessly inflexible, but it is always possible to adapt to get benefit from it.

I like doing 80's ones for the craic. Much better music and moves than modern ones Grin

My dedication to serious fitness is questionable tbf.

MashedSpud · 08/04/2020 12:48

Beginners Tai Chi.

CuntyBumpkin · 08/04/2020 18:59

Thank you so much everyone. I feel so much better knowing I'm the not only one who gets frustrated when the usual workouts get suggested.

I've subscribed to yoga with Adrienne on you tube as she does 15min ones which look up my street. I've got some saved videos of the suggestions here so thank you to everyone who has made recommendations. Smile

I love the idea of doing fun excerisises to kids music. Excersise is always so serious with expensive lycra and really thin people Sad
If I don't find it fun I give up easily.

To the PP who suggested Vit D3, I started a few days ago so hopefully it will make a difference.

I love yoga with Adriene too OP, hope you enjoy! Thank you for starting the thread - I'm getting worried that I'm not walking my normal amount (have stayed home for weeks thanks to being high risk) and now going to check out some of these other ideas too Smile

Let us know how you find yoga!

womanthatfelltoearth · 10/04/2020 11:42

Thanks to this post I am now doing the 30 day yoga with Adrienne (day 3 done) and have given Leslie Sansome a go. I also did a Mr Motivator session yesterday afternoon Grin. Said to DH not sure how the unfit, middle aged home exercisers managed to complete a session when he was on TV all those years ago and then realised that now describes me...
