FURRY COSPLAY 13 year old DD into it. Never heard of it before!

You think you’re a hip and groovy parent and your young about to be a teenager tells you they’re ‘into Furry’ now.

Quick google, harmless enough looking conventions, under Cosplay general theme, but then it also has an attraction for young children and some of the provocative poses (of the female costumes) are now making me wonder exactly what it’s about before I consider buying her an ‘I’m into Furries’ tshirt that she wants Hmm

Anyone (who’s not SolidGoldBrass Grin ) enlighten me more? Especially if their own teens are into it. How new is this Furry stuff? Never heard of it before. Assume it’s a TikTok craze.

Errrrrrrr no. Remember the whole Amy whatshername Green party debacle?
Do NOT buy your kid an 'I'm into Furries' t shirt.
No.
No.
No.
and then a few more Nos.

Is this a distraction thread to give people something new to froth about?

applepineapple · 06/04/2020 23:26

It's a sexual fetish. Do you really think it's appropriate for a 13 year old?

Redherring2 · 06/04/2020 23:26

*@

No genuinely haven’t heard of the Furry movement. Don’t know who Amy is either.

@applepineapple. Yeah, that’s why I’m asking on here obviously. From what I’ve googled (my iPad has restrictions on because the kids use it) I haven’t found anything untoward so far.

BrooHaHa · 06/04/2020 23:30

Well, cosplay is generally dressing up as characters from fiction. Often anime or sci-fi.

From what I gather, furry cosplay is dressing up as a furry animals.

Furries, on the other hand, are a sexual fetish. Do not get the t shirt.

LockedInMadness · 06/04/2020 23:31

I haven’t found anything untoward so far.

You haven't looked hard enough Grin

Redherring2 · 06/04/2020 23:34

Okay. Turned restrictions off (hope I bloody remember to turn them back on...)

Yeh I can see now it’s a fine line between innocent animal character dressing up and fetish.
Also just learnt about Bronies, never heard of that either. Men who like dressing up as my little pony characters.

Yeah she isn’t getting the tshirt. Luckily her phone is also restricted within an inch of her life so she isn’t able to google too much.

Ask in Feminist Chat.

tiktok · 06/04/2020 23:37

Amy Challoner - ugh. Check the name out on the web.

Lift the restrictions on your iPad (and then replace them). Furries is sexual fetish - really horrible with paedo aspects.

Then ask your daughter where on earth she has learnt about it, and check what sort of friends she has.

Hope it works out and she stays safe.

TheMagiciansMewTwo · 06/04/2020 23:38

Have a look at Twitter Hmm The furry community has lots of sexual content, very misogynistic and some of the 'famous' gaming furries have had posts deleted for threatening women and posting fantasies about violence against women. I wouldn't let a teen girl anywhere near it.
Defenders will say every community has its problems but the objectionable content within the furries is very close to the surface.

VivaLeBeaver · 06/04/2020 23:41

Someone I used to work with his adult son is a Furry.

He spent 5k on a furry costume. The conventions he goes to consist of seeing how many men he can sex with while wearing his costume which has a big dildo sewn in to it as part of the costume. Thats in America though. No idea about uk conventions.

Redherring2 · 06/04/2020 23:43

Ok thanks all. (Restrictions back on now). I checked it out and first results were porn related. Looks I’ll be having a talk with her tomorrow.

For the poster who asked what sort of friends my DD has ; one is from a strict Hindu family, two are on a council estate and one is streetwise.

But they all play Animal Jam and send phone pictures to eachother of nothing more alarming than dinosaurs dressing up and making daft videos. She really is quite sheltered. This has come from her Animal Jam activity I think.

If anyone with a very strong stomach wants a good laugh at these fetish creeps goodle Rainfurrest Con, it was such a disaster it got all furry conventions banned from Washington State in the US.

giggly · 06/04/2020 23:53

So I’ve just asked my dd 14 who is into cosplay. She said that the kids who are into dressing up in furry costumes are “way” Hmm different from the adults who dress up. I go along to many comic cons and see kids dressed up all the time as well as adults. My dd is into anime and some of that is sexually inappropriate but I check what she is watching regularly and she hates that side to it.

AmelieTaylor · 06/04/2020 23:55

Oh come on!

You said you weren’t looking for SGB’s take on it, so you know it’s sexual.

LivinginSilves · 07/04/2020 00:00

Just google Aimee Challenor and Aimee's father Baloo Challenor.
Along with pup play. Makes for quite interesting and disturbing reading

ArriettyJones · 07/04/2020 00:03

For the poster who asked what sort of friends my DD has ; one is from a strict Hindu family, two are on a council estate and one is streetwise.

What an interesting way of describing who humans are Hmm

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 07/04/2020 00:09

You said you weren’t looking for SGB’s take on it, so you know it’s sexual.

Exactly!

Too much spare time on your hands OP?

Lockheart · 07/04/2020 00:22

Whilst it's not solely a sexual fetish community there are heavily sexualised elements which are pretty pervasive. Furry porn is very easily available in quantity when you're looking at these online forums.

It doesn't bother me what consenting adults do but as your DD is only 15 you'll need to take a bit of control here.

I know one furry (who enjoys the sexual side of it) in real life. He's a pretty normal guy, works in finance, quiet, he's not a close friend but I'll happily go for a drink with him. Lots of people like to portray them as slavering deviants but in my experience they're (mostly) normal people who have a particular fetish. Nothing wrong with that as long as everyone's consenting.

Boireannachlaidir · 07/04/2020 00:30

Why the need to update us on the minutiae of turning your internet restrictions off/on? Why the faux innocence at whether this is suitable for kids or not? Why not do something more useful with your life? Hmm

KilljoysDutch · 07/04/2020 01:07

A Lot of furrys are into beastiality and pedophilia. There are better communities for your daughter to get into and I suspect what she enjoys is actually anthro art and not the whole yiff side.

Runnerduck34 · 07/04/2020 01:12

I have heard that it has sexual connotations / fetish.
Im sure your 13 year old is innocently unaware of that but do not allow them to buy it! Distract , say no, explain if necessary

safariboot · 07/04/2020 01:15

As mentioned, for a significant fraction of those involved it's a sexual fetish. And "sexual fetish" does not belong anywhere remotely near "13 year old"!

I would not encourage it, but equally not attempt to forbid it, and be very watchful and wary of what she gets involved in online.

Redherring2 · 07/04/2020 02:57

@CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate

Absolutely, if I didn’t have concerns there might be something more to it, I wouldn’t have alluded to SGB’s potential for contribution.

I did suspect there’s more to it than innocent little furry animal costumes, and came here for clarification on that.

@giggly

Thankyou, i was hoping someone with a similar age teen could shed light. An opinion of a child that age will help me formulate how best to approach my own child on the topic.

whatdayisitandotherquestions · 07/04/2020 03:56

"Innoncent" furry stuff is grooming. I'd want to know where they heard about it and I'd not be surprised if it was a friend they trust / like but have never actually met on one of their games. Have you looked at the messages they're sending and receiving I their games? If not have a look. I'd start with animal jam.
