What are the burglars doing ? Has crime dropped ?

Has crime dropped substantially in your area ?
Pre lock down my London Nextdoor digest was awash with crime; car and house break in's, handbag snatching etc.
What's the guy who was clearly a dealer loitering near the tube doing now ?

Houses are too likely to be occupied during the day ATM to risk burglary.

The drug dealer is probably on lockdown like everyone else Smile

PlanDeRaccordement · 01/04/2020 05:34

Nah. I am sure thieves are scouting out and robbing the empty city homes of the rich who have fled to their second or third homes in the country. It’s just that since we are under lockdown, the owners haven’t been able to go back to their city homes to discover they’ve been robbed. After lockdown, you can be sure there will be a surge of break ins reported.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 01/04/2020 05:36

Oh, there was an article in the weekend FT on this that I forgot to read - thanks for reminding me.

Random headlines suggest there are an awful lot of virus related scams being perpetrated. Fake cures, testing kits, volunteers ...

^ This.

I was thinking the same about gang-related knife crime in London. The news is so full of the pandemic that perhaps I've missed any.

Marmite27 · 01/04/2020 06:21

No, my car was broken into last night. I hope they enjoy the bag of children’s toys they stole Angry

woodencoffeetable · 01/04/2020 06:21

in the netherlands after all cafe and restaurants were forced to close 3 weeks ago it was very quickly decided that coffee shops (the places where you can legally buy cannabis) need to stay open to prevent drug dealing and related crime.

HennyPenny4 · 01/04/2020 06:25

Thieves are targetting business premises - article in the Sunday Times, police finding people out when they shouldn't be, and carrying crowbars and jemmys. Don't think they had striped jumpers one but probably did have swag bags.

SamSeabornforPresident · 01/04/2020 06:28

Yup, a lot of business premises are being done around here. DD's nursery was burgled the other day.

panicstationsready · 01/04/2020 06:29

I was thinking this the other day - surely there will be a lot more drug dealers houses being identified as no one is supposed to visits others houses suddenly noticing your next door neighbour has a lot of visitors might be a bit of a giveaway. And a dealer standing on the corner will stick out like a sore thumb!

Sloff · 01/04/2020 06:57

Still the same low life scum around here, on camera, trying car doors and trying to get into houses when the people are asleep. Maybe not as many but it is still happening.

Blankiefan · 01/04/2020 07:11

link

On a related story, police have arrested 650 criminals who were at home for a change during lockdown!

mynameiscalypso · 01/04/2020 07:11

Apparently the police in London have been making lots of raids on suspects' houses to seize weapons/drugs etc because they not they're more likely to be home. We were wondering last night how this has impacted drug dealers - one of the people in our block of flats was smoking pot and, assuming they don't grow it, how do you get it on lockdown?

Bezalelle · 01/04/2020 07:15

What are the terrorists doing??

midgebabe · 01/04/2020 07:20

Read there had been a drop in ( 20 or 30%) physical crime. Online thriving

pippong · 01/04/2020 07:26

The drug dealer down my road is asking customers to leave money in the stairwell whilst he chucks out the drugs in a baggy.

A shop was burgled (I think) last week when I went in to central london. I didn't see anything but the alarm was going nuts.

NemophilistRebel · 01/04/2020 07:37

I think the dealers are still doing a delivery service

Verily1 · 01/04/2020 07:42

Lockdown should reduce drug consumption like everything else.

Makeitgoaway · 01/04/2020 07:43

I wondered if this might disrupt county lines but I suspect it's just gone further underground. Addicts still need their drugs Sad

TestBank · 01/04/2020 07:44

Businesses robbed here instead. And weird door to door scams of the elderly.

Notredamn · 01/04/2020 07:49

Criminals haven't suddenly been reformed because the government told them to stay indoors and there's a virus going round.
People are simply going for walks for their drugs, one local dealer is dealing out of his back door which backs on to alleyway.
Burglaries going on like before, whilst people are asleep in bed, but no daylight robberies.

TeaAddict235 · 01/04/2020 08:13

Burglars are going for 'walks' scouting property activity. Therefore they identify what a property looks like now in full occupancy, to note for later once the lockdown is relaxed. Then they will attempt.

Lots of companies premises are being raided. DH's company told everyone to take all electronic items home during the lockdown, not just to work from home but the reduce the amount of equipment on the premises.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/04/2020 08:42

Thankfully the risk of terrorism will be much lower as their preferred target of a crowded place doesn't really exist right now.

Nice to hear that the police have been doing something more useful (catching up with wanted criminals while they are at home) rather than shaming people buying crisps.

Nicknacky · 01/04/2020 08:55

It’s much quieter crime wise in the area I work, however I didn’t think it will be long before we see a sharp spike in violent crime.

We had break ins to closed commercial properties straight after the closure of the businesses though.

habibihabibi · 01/04/2020 09:01

I know dealers are probably much mote conspicuous but will/how will they be processed and dealt with by the police with all the restrictions?
