Has crime dropped substantially in your area ?
Pre lock down my London Nextdoor digest was awash with crime; car and house break in's, handbag snatching etc.
What's the guy who was clearly a dealer loitering near the tube doing now ?

Lots of online crime and scams doing the rounds, especially in frontline services where attention is being stretched. Fake texts, spoof emails, dodgy phone calls, fake 'volunteers' trying to get access to vulnerable people. Loads of those 'give away personal info about yourself' quizzes doing the rounds on Facebook at the moment, for example.

Notredamn · 01/04/2020 09:39

Dealers aren't a police priority round here.

poshredrose · 01/04/2020 09:43

Dealers next door to me are still getting multiple customers an hour. Random cars stopping, door knocking, hushed whispers and then away. Anyone know an online way of reporting?

AlexCabot · 01/04/2020 09:46

What are the shoplifters doing at the moment? We've never been under so much surveillance in the shops that are still open!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 01/04/2020 09:47

Our primary school was broken into for cleaning supplies last night.Bastards.

al2616 · 01/04/2020 09:59

Our local hospice was ransacked and their van stolen. Disgusting behaviour.

Anyone know an online way of reporting?
Crimestoppers website though possibly not the quickest.

I'd neighbours who were dealing out of rented flat and being a big nuisance with "clients" constantly ringing the wrong bell , loitering, visiting all night long.
It took a well over a year for the mutal landlord to get them out and the police didnt do anything even thought it was apparent it was a fairly major operation they were running.

Seen online:
SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU SMILE AS WE ENTER OUR FIRST WEEKEND IN LOCKDOWN.

Amid the clamour of appeal for Government support, however, the plight of one group appears to have been cruelly overlooked.

Criminals.

The Prime Minister may only have announced the nationwide lockdown on Monday night, but already families from across the law-breaking community are feeling the pinch. Burglars, for example, have seen their takings collapse.
“It’s a nightmare,” says Barry Knuckles, president of the National Union of Housebreakers. “Now that the entire population is at home 24 hours a day, it’s impossible to burgle anyone. They’re never out.”
Speaking on the Today programme, Mr Knuckles urged the Government to provide financial support for his members during these tough times. He called on the Chancellor to cover 80 per cent of the value of all the laptops, jewellery and flatscreen TVs that Britain’s burglars would normally have stolen and sold on. So far, however, he has yet to receive a response.
“The political class are completely out of touch with the concerns of decent, hard-working criminals,” he says.
But burglars aren’t the only felons struggling to meet the challenges of the coronavirus age. coronavirus age.
“It’s all very well for people who can work from home, like phishing scammers and identity thieves,” says Dave Fingers, chairman of the Association of British Muggers and Bag-Snatchers. “But how are you supposed to pick someone’s pocket from two metres away? Some of our lads have tried using those little hooked rods you get in fairground hook-a-duck games, or those funny reacher-grabber tools that old folk use for picking up stuff they’ve dropped on the floor. But it’s hopeless. The Government’s got to think again.” (Extract from an article in the Telegraph Sat 28 Mar)

On a more serious note however there have been reports of criminals changing their methods and resorting to more serious attacks on people, for example not only are front line NHS workers being abused by people accusing them of spreading the virus but they are being targeted by muggers for their ID badges.

Not all criminals are staying at home, and they are becoming more desperate and taking more risks as time goes on.

Please stay vigilant and report suspicious behaviour to the Police by calling 101.

Notredamn · 01/04/2020 10:12

Posh you can google your police force's name and anon report, or report with your name and you will usually receive an email back thanking you and sometimes asking questions. It's quite quick response time. Or ring the non emergency number.
Good luck, the best you can hope for is they're on probation and will be recalled.

IpeartreeI · 01/04/2020 10:12

In my area, car and shed break ins seem to be continuing.

cocoaweebles · 01/04/2020 10:14

@barbaraofseville Thankfully the risk of terrorism will be much lower as their preferred target of a crowded place doesn't really exist right now

Unfortunately they will be planning heinous activities.

leckford · 01/04/2020 10:16

There are more burglary of unoccupied shops in towns, someone made an inept ram raid to steal a cash machine from the Coop near us. County line gangs are luring more uncared for children into drug running, this was on the news but I would imagine the police would catch them

CuriousaboutSamphire · 01/04/2020 10:18

We've had a spate of doorstep thefts.

Yes... those food packages that have been delivered overnight, early morning have been stolen.

Someone who lives close to me is stealing food from the most vulnerable in our community. People they KNOW are vulnerable. If they are ever identified I suspect they will be ostracised at best...

ComtesseDeSpair · 01/04/2020 10:56

It must be more difficult for drug addicts to be able to get the money for their fixes - begging won’t be very profitable right now, shoplifting will be nearly impossible, nowhere to go to sell on anything they do manage to steal.

Hoppinggreen · 01/04/2020 10:59

Mind vandalism and rifling through cars at night seem to have gone up round here

mynameiscalypso · 01/04/2020 12:05

I knew MN would know what the impact of lockdown on drug dealers would be! God bless this place.

Sloff · 01/04/2020 12:08

The beggars that try to make you open your car window are also still about.

Schmoana · 01/04/2020 12:50

I wondered this too, and if there’s been an impact On the increasing knife crime we were seeing in London

Notredamn · 01/04/2020 12:59

Are you saying I'm lying, calypso? I have more insight than most perhaps but I wouldn't put myself by saying how exactly.

Fatted · 01/04/2020 13:03

It's about the same as usual. They're just robbing all of the empty shops, pubs, second homes etc.

My local drug dealer is also still out and about as usual.

EL8888 · 01/04/2020 13:06

No the crime rate hasn’t dropped, the police had thought it would but not yet. It’s different types of crime though e.g. public order offences

H1978 · 01/04/2020 13:09

I’ve heard of several cars being set on fire since the lockdown

WhyDoesItAlways · 01/04/2020 13:09

I wonder how long it will be for the drug supply to dry up. Surely all the travel restrictions will have a huge impact on importation.

Thighmageddon · 01/04/2020 13:09

I was wondering about drug dealers too.

The other thing that my relatively bored mind has pondered was bailiffs and debt collectors. Are they now deemed unessential workers? Because obviously no one will be letting them through their doors.
