What does the word ‘bimonthly’ mean to you?

Had a discussion at work, it always meant every two months to me but my boss meant twice a month!

According to the Oxford English Dictionary it has two meanings which is rather confusing. So just curious as to how many think like I do, and how many think the other way?

I've always taken it as once every two months.

Twice a month would be once a fortnight...but don't go down that rabbit hole with American colleagues!

FlibbertyGiblets · 30/03/2020 12:21

Twice an month.

Biweekly under your def would be fortnightly and we already have that word for it!

karala · 30/03/2020 12:21

it's every second month - bi-weekly would be twice a month

Rafflesway · 30/03/2020 12:22

I would understand it to mean the same as you, OP.

If I meant twice per month I personally would refer to it as "Twice monthly".

Flyinggeese · 30/03/2020 12:23

Twice per month.

FlamingoAndJohn · 30/03/2020 12:23

I understand it to be every other month.

WisestIsShe · 30/03/2020 12:24

Every other month to me as well.

JollyGiraffe12 · 30/03/2020 12:25

Every 2 months here too. Surely twice a month is just fortnightly?

toomuchfaster · 30/03/2020 12:25

I understand it can mean either twice a month or every 2 months so I would never use it and would always clarify if someone used it to me.

FlamingoAndJohn · 30/03/2020 12:25

Biannual plants have a two year lifecycle.

Looking it up, it can mean both twice a month or once every two months.

YangShanPo · 30/03/2020 12:26

Is it a trans friendly term for periods?

Slat3 · 30/03/2020 12:26

Every 2 months - we have 121s bimonthly

TaxFool · 30/03/2020 12:26

I got caught out by this recently, but with bi-weekly. To me, bi-weekly means twice a week. But apparently it can also mean every two weeks. How unhelpful!

LoudBatPerson · 30/03/2020 12:27

Every other month.

woodencoffeetable · 30/03/2020 12:27

twice a month.

bi-weekly is twice a week.

in medicine you get the abbreviation 'bid' meaning twice a day.

bis = latin for twice

FrankieKnuckles · 30/03/2020 12:27

Every other month.

Bimbleberries · 30/03/2020 12:28

I thought bi-something meant every 2 and semi-something meant twice in that interval

Biannual vs semi-annual etc.

Littlegoth · 30/03/2020 12:28

Every other month

Spied · 30/03/2020 12:28

Every other month

happysunr1se · 30/03/2020 12:28

I once heard biscuit means baked twice

Soubriquet · 30/03/2020 12:31

Twice a month to me

But it’s a weird one really cos fortnightly would mean the same thing.

KittenVsBox · 30/03/2020 12:31

I would clearly if it was twice a month or every other month.
It's not clear!

SpyApp · 30/03/2020 12:32

Every 2 months.

Plexie · 30/03/2020 12:33

It means a word to avoid using because it's ambiguous. Likewise bi-weekly and bi-yearly.

tiredanddangerous · 30/03/2020 12:36

I would take it to mean twice a month.
