So this is an obvious opportunity to get fit - where to start?!

Silver linings and all that :). I’m tremendously unfit. Where/how should I start to get fit so that I emerge from this as a - um, what’s the opposite of shadow - of my former self?

Have a garden but no equipment, and have the desire but no aptitude. Thank you :)

I remember how the female lead got fit in Terminator, by bench pressing etc using her bed....

Redshoeblueshoe · 24/03/2020 14:37

Joe Wickes is doing exercises for kids at 9am each morning. MNers are knackered ! So it must work

Grabbner · 24/03/2020 14:37

Really? I’ve never seen Terminator

I'm unfit too op (except for dog-walking and the occasional slow horse ride).

Daily walking slots with Leslie Sansone (Sansome?) on You Tube is a good place to start.

One brisk short walk outside far away from others.

Could you wear a pedometer to track your number of steps?

Up and down stairs a number of times a day? Or using bottom stair as a step?

The NHS website has a good basic get fit programme on its website too, which includes healthy eating etc.

Grabbner · 24/03/2020 14:40

I keep thinking about prisoners and how they use incarceration to get fit. If they can do it, perhaps I can too. The fact that I’m a 55 yr old housewife, and not a younger person, seems to have gone right above my head!

Joe Wickes 9am on YouTube- good start

Grabbner · 24/03/2020 14:42

Thank you Size, will look up Leslie.

I recommend the Fitness Blender website, they have workouts of varying lengths and levels so great place to start

Ineedachange · 24/03/2020 14:43

Try the 7 minute workout app. You don't need any equipment and it's only 7 minutes a day. It's a great way to start.

Thank you all.

I have a suppressed desire to get super fit in secret so that one day I can shock my 3 extra-fit, extra-healthy ds’s. They have mounted a long-standing campaign to get me exercising, which to date I’ve resisted. I have visions now of casually asking them one day to accompany me on a run and to see their faces as I leave them standing! Not happening but, in these strange times, a satisfying fantasy!

Just popped on to say I think this is a great idea. It’s so easy to think I’ll sit on my arse, eat shit, and drink whatever, no one is going to see me anyway, and then emerge in a few weeks a couple of stone heavier and feeling like shit.

Personally I’d order some York weights from amazon, they aren’t too expensive, and assuming money isn’t too tight, if it is apologies,if not then, get heavier ones, then download a weight lifting app and go for it. Weight lifting is fantastic for women in making them fitter and leaner...and doing so fast.

I’m fifty one and can thoroughly recommend.

I am on day two of the Joe Wicks PE with Joe at 9am. My thighs ache but it is great! I really hope to keep it up. I’m also 55 and very unfit.

Grabbner · 24/03/2020 14:55

Thank you Bluntness, I can stretch the finances to include weights. I’m sure the boys won’t miss a meal or two ... :). Maybe we should set up some sort of mn version of Joe Wicks’s sessions.

I can't go out but I have an exercise bike so I am doing that every day, plus a bit of yoga. I usually walk a lot though and I am definitely getting fatter - jeans are getting tighter! What can I do to keep my waist from expanding?

neighbourhoodwitch · 24/03/2020 14:59

Agree!! - and Couch to 5K - download to your 'phone.

Sizeablecontours · 24/03/2020 15:03

I 'm sure you could use tins or water bottles or something if you don't have weights

Grabbner · 24/03/2020 15:04

Bluntness have you a particular app you’d recommend? I’m thinking of getting an exercise bike too.

Weights also don’t take up a load of space, I like chloe madeley.

I exercise regularly, ive a “not so great” home gym and workout five or six days a week normally, i have found myself recently, saying fuck it, why bother, but am forcing myself to go and do it irrelevant of mood, I’m determined I’m not going to come out the other side having piled on weight and become unfit from sitting on my arse all day.

This morning for example I was in a foul mood, feeling angry about what was happening, and dragged myself in there, but I felt a lot better when I came out, I’d burned off some steam so to speak, and then had a shower and made myself look human.

The effects on your mental health as well as your physical really can’t be denied.

SidsWife · 24/03/2020 15:06

I’m going to lie under my really heavy coffee table and try and press it Grin

I’ll probably end up caving my head in but at least then I won’t have to pay my rent Grin

Bluntness100 · 24/03/2020 15:11

Sorry cross posted, a bike is good.

When I’m on the stationary bike I do a mixture as I bore easily, so I cycle up hill for two mins standing up, then cycle for two mins on a flat leaning forward like a racer, then two mins uphill sitting straight up. ( weird it works different muscles based on your position) and just keep shifting it around so I never get bored, until I’ve done the time or distance I want.

For me I do cardio two days, then weights one day, then cardio two days then weights one day. Then take a day off.

You start off really unfit, can’t do much but you’d be really surprised how quickly that changes and you build stamina and muscle. Don’t be disheartened the first few times as you will get fitter very quickly.

Just remember to keep upping it every couple of weeks and don’t do the same thing all the time if you’re prone to boredom.

BloggersNetwork · 24/03/2020 16:09

Good old 30 day shred for me

DinosApple · 24/03/2020 16:22

I did PE with Joe Wicks yesterday and am walking like my 90yo grandma today and in agony. I couldn't do today's Blush.

I'm very unfit, but was also in bed with whatever virus I had last week. That's my only excuse Blush Blush.

I will probably have another go tomorrow or Thursday.

Poppi89 · 24/03/2020 18:04

Where can you watch joe wicks? And os it repeated later on in the day?

Redshoeblueshoe · 24/03/2020 18:29

Poppi he's on YouTube

acatcalledjohn · 24/03/2020 18:33

Agree with the 7 min app and C25K.

Weights aren't necessary, you'd be impressed how much you can do with body weight and household items!
