Safe baby monitor for toddler?

DS sleeps reasonably well in his little toddler bed at the foot of my bed. I want to move him into his own room but I’m worried I won’t hear him cry if he wakes up. My town house has one bedroom per floor - so I won’t be just next door, I’ll be on a different floor. I’m worried about using a baby monitor because he can get out of bed and it’s unsafe to have cables he could strangle himself with.

Any suggestions? Is it possible to get a monitor with no cables?

He’s just over two. He’s always been a bad sleeper and it was a hassle going upstairs 5x a night so his bed has been squashed in my room. But recently he’s started to sleep through so I want to put him upstairs. But I want him to be able to alert me during the night if he needs to. Friends leave the door open and their toddler just comes into their room, but that isn’t an option for me given the layout of my house.

My house has 3 floors and my toddler just shouts up the stairs when she needs us. If you need a baby monitor just put it high up e.g. on top of chest of drawers and have the wires behind the furniture so he can't get to it.

There are basic ones that plug into a mains socket for about £20 in Argos. Or you could get a VOX activated walkie talkies that could do the trick.

OP they do usually have cables but we just have the camera on a shelf in amongst cuddly toys. It is also plugged in behind furniture so he cannot get to the wires. You can also get wire fixings and fix the wire to the wall from the plug. Would either of those be an optional for you?

We have a camera mounted on the wall above DS's bed. The cable runs up the wall but is enclosed in a piece of plastic trunking that sticks to the wall. It was a couple of quid from B&Q and keeps the cable out of his reach. He's an absolute monkey for yanking stuff and it's remained intact since he's been in his little bed. I couldn't hear him when I'm downstairs so the monitor gives me great peace of mind, I can also see what the little tinker is up to if he get out!

We have a monitor for our DD’s room for when we go sit outside of a summer evening and we’ve placed the cord behind a toy storage unit that’s secured to the wall. So there’s no way she can get at the cord. Alternatively if he’s a young toddler and because you’re in a town house I’d suggest a stair gate on his room anyway then you could leave his door open a crack and put the monitor on the landing. Babies have died from being strangled by monitor cords- it’s important to be safe.

The plug is under his bed so he can't tea h that either!

Handsoffisback ops mental health sounds fine; what a rude comment. I think she sounds like a decent parent trying to keel her child safe and it's a pity all parents are not the same!

The house has our bedroom on the ground floor, the living room on the 1st floor and DS’s room on the 2nd floor. So if we’re in the sitting room we’re only one floor down from DS and we hear him cry. Even so we have to keep the tv very quiet in order to hear. I’m not convinced we’d hear if we were down another flight of stairs and sound asleep.

Yes he often puts things round his neck, if he gets his hands on my dressing gown cord or a phone cable etc. We had to remove a lamp because he kept wrapping himself in the cord. I wouldn’t like to leave him unsupervised with a baby monitor cable within reach.

Yes there’s a gate on his door but there’s no power socket on the little landing outside. I’d have to plug it in his room but I have safety concerns. The furniture is built in so there’s nothing to put a cable behind. Without a monitor I’d be relying on hearing him down two flights of stairs whilst asleep.

OP I think your best bet would be plugging it in and putting camera from socket on to shelf and fixing the wire securely to the wall using a wire box or fixings.

Are there any plugs in the hallway where you could plug it in? Then have a stair gate across his room door ?

You can get electrical cable trunking on amazon.

There are narrow stairs up to the top floor and a tiny landing just big enough to open the door. No plug socket. The gate is on the door because it wasn’t possible to attach it to the stairs.

Put the monitor under his bed,wrap the cable around the leg of the bed.
Don't tell him it's there!

We have a monitor on top of DD’s chest of drawers, with the wire attached firmly to the side of the furniture and the plug socket enclosed so she can’t fiddle with it.

As if children and toddlers have never strangled themselves. Jesus, a quick google will show you plenty that have on blind cords, if you want some light nighttime reading

OP you're being sensible. I have one on a long cord and I've wondered what I will do when DS has a bed.

I have older children and I know exactly what kind of things they get up to....

We have one that plugs directly into the mains, very basic (one-way only, no camera) but does the trick. Got it from a charity shop but will try to find similar online
