Genuine question, if you don’t use a food waste bin

Why not?

Accepting that some people may not have a garden or room

But if you live in a house with a driveway and a garden, and your council provides food waste collections, why wouldn’t you utilise this?

I am genuinely interested to know.

Not for the first time, my dim witted dog has eaten food which has been ripped out of a bin bag by presumably cats, rats, birds or foxes.

I just don’t get why you wouldn’t use the facility if it is there.

The fruit flies put me off a lot.

lemonmeringue3 · 17/02/2020 20:49

I didn't originally as I was squeamish about the horror stories of maggots and rotting food. At some point during this time our food bin went missing.

I've since gotten over it, had a new food bin from the council and haven't had any of the yucky problems that I was dreading. I run it through the dishwasher on a regular basis to keep it clean.

LoisLittsLover · 17/02/2020 20:52

I have waste disposal. There is very little that I can't put down it so I don't use the food waste bin. But occasionally bones of tough fruit skin (banana) may end up in my bin

BarbarAnna · 17/02/2020 20:53

We have small caddies that get emptied into a garden and food waste wheelie bin. Very few issues with flies and maggots. Definitely had bigger issues in the days we binned all food waste.

Ooh I used to have waste disposal - wish I did again.

Our council don't do a food waste collection. I do compost though.

bobbypinseverywhere · 17/02/2020 20:56

My council doesn’t provide one. But I have a greedy dog.

travailtotravel · 17/02/2020 20:57

Our council don't offer it.

LoisLittsLover · 17/02/2020 20:58

@BarbarAnna I couldn't be without it now!

marblesgoing · 17/02/2020 20:58

Don't need a food waste bin as
We rarely have food waste.

Peelings get put out in the composter down the garden and my indoor composters (x2 dogs)Grinkind of help out with the rest Grin

My next door neighbours put their food waste caddy out each week with the equivalent of a small paper bags worth of scraps

Whynosnowyet · 17/02/2020 20:59

5 ddogs and 3 teens. No waste ever here...

Sparklingbrook · 17/02/2020 21:00

Our council did offer it then withdrew it.
We have a visiting fox who has his own plate which we put any suitable food waste on in the garden.

FunnyInjury · 17/02/2020 21:00

We dont have food waste bins. The council have plans to be carbon neutral by 2030, so they must be doing 'something' with general waste.
We dont have glass collected either 🤷‍♀️

Pascha · 17/02/2020 21:00

We also have a waste disposal.

RainRainGoAway2020 · 17/02/2020 21:02

I had maggots in mine twice so I stopped using it.

Pinkflipflop85 · 17/02/2020 21:04

Our council don't offer it.

TheFluffiestCat · 17/02/2020 21:05

Our council doesn't do it, so we compost everything we can, and pretty much eat the rest. Veggie, so no bones or grotty gristly bits.

Howgreenwasmyvalley · 17/02/2020 21:06

We have a small one for the kitchen, which is then emptied into bigger one and collected every week. I wouldn't do without it and have never had maggots.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 17/02/2020 21:06

I try not to have food waste at all. If there ever is anything left, it'll go on the compost heap.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 17/02/2020 21:07

We don’t have one. I don’t know why - our council is pretty environmentally friendly on the whole - I have been meaning to email them and ask but I’m really rubbish at getting round to things at the moment.

Mum2jenny · 17/02/2020 21:08

No food waste bins here, unfortunately. Not sure I’d use them though as we have minimal food waste.

Faircastle · 17/02/2020 21:09

We don't have much food waste. What we do have goes in the big compost bin at the bottom of the garden. We don't eat meat, and the foxes seem to leave the compost bin alone.

FrangipaniBlue · 17/02/2020 21:09

because potato/carrot peelings aside, we don't have any food waste

Toria70 · 17/02/2020 21:09

We rarely have food waste as we have two dogs that eat leftover veg/meat off our plates. I found them disgusting to keep on top of in the summer, and on top of the waste bin and the recycling, was starting to feel like I worked for the council.

My attitude is that it helps landfill decompose.

Ronnie27 · 17/02/2020 21:10

Fruit flies, smell and general Ming. My food waste goes in the big lidded bin in the adjoining garage out of the way.
