Genuine question, if you don’t use a food waste bin

Why not?

Accepting that some people may not have a garden or room

But if you live in a house with a driveway and a garden, and your council provides food waste collections, why wouldn’t you utilise this?

I am genuinely interested to know.

Not for the first time, my dim witted dog has eaten food which has been ripped out of a bin bag by presumably cats, rats, birds or foxes.

I just don’t get why you wouldn’t use the facility if it is there.

When we lived in suburbia we did and had no issues. Since moving into the countryside we then had issues with ants and then mice and we were emptying it every day and still had issues

So sadly no we don't use it anymore (and now have no mice or ant issues)

At the moment we can't as people keep stealing our food waste bins. We aren't at home to take them in right after collection and do label them

We have had maggot issues one of two times in very hot weather, but I find putting bleach round the edge discourages the flies. Alternatively, when it gets emptied just leave it out front and your friendly neighbourhood robin will come an pick it out for you Grin.

Can I ask those who do not have any waste. I put all peelings, dead lettuce etc on the compost but still have plate scrappings and things like bones, fish skin, mouldy fresh pasta etc etc that can't go on the heap. The cat eats all our out of date meats, but even so......

*You only get maggots when you leave food lying around or leave the lid open. Clear the plates asap and it wont happen

Bollocks. We have a chicken farm about a mile away and in the summer there are flies everywhere. The cat's food is full of flies eggs if it's out for more than an hour or two, the brown bin of food crap doesn't stand a chance.*

Exactly what I said. Leave the food out and they will lay in it
