Evil misogynistic song lyrics

Billy Joel, ‘Always a woman to me’. Heard this introduced on the radio today as a romantic love letter to his wife.
‘She’ll carelessly cut you and laugh while you’re bleeding’ - wtf?
What other apparently sweet loving songs have lyrics that on closer inspection turn out to be woman-hating bile?

“Ain't No Woman (Like the One I've Got)” by the Four Tops

It’s a pretty song and I love it, but there’s this line:

“I would kiss the ground she walks on,
‘Cause it's my word, my word she'll obey, now.…”

Obviously not as offensive as some other songs, but even hearing it as a little kid, that part made me go “Hmmmm.”

Iambloodystarving · 08/02/2020 04:48

Eminem anyone?

"Use intercourse to settle scores
With women who have been vendettas towards men
Dickhead is forced in 'til there's shredded foreskin
Reddish torn and they're only bein' fed a portion"

Most of Hip Hop after the Fugees. As for RAP? The brutality is awful

The award winning, worldwide number one “Blurred Lines” from 2013 is about date rape. It’s genuinely disturbing that it was so popular.

EllaEllaE · 08/02/2020 07:17

I was going to say ‘More Than Words’ too. It's annoying because it sounds beautiful, until you pay attention to the words!

So many of the Beatles songs are gross. 'Norwegian Wood' for instance: I went to her house, she wouldn't have sex with me, so I set her house on fire.

Shoxfordian · 08/02/2020 07:25

Yeah I came to say Blurred Lines
"You know you want it..."

There is an amazing feminist version of it though

lightnesspixie · 08/02/2020 07:31

Use ta be my girl by the O Jays:
Not only good looking
The girl was so smart
Ya can't beat her cooking
🙈

lightnesspixie · 08/02/2020 07:36

Omg another one I hated even in 1986 when I was 19
Happy Hour Again by the Housemartins

It's another night out with the boss
Following in footsteps overgrown with moss
And he tells me that women grow on trees
And if you catch them right they will land upon their knees
Where they open all their wallets
And they close all their minds
And they love to buy you all a drink
And then we ask all the questions
And you take all your clothes off
And go back to the kitchen sink

Ugh ugh ugh

Westlife - Looking Like That

She's all dressed up for glamour and rock and roll
Want to squeeze her real tight get out of this place
If only I could take control
But she's out of my reach forever
And just a week ago she lied next to me
It's so ironic how I had to lose just to see

Mony Mony - Billy Idol

Break 'dis, shake 'dis, mony, mony
Shot gun, get it done, come on, honey
Don't stop cookin', it feels so good, yeah
Hey! well don't stop now, hey, come on mony, well come on,
Mony

Pretty sure he sings wanna ride you like a pony at one point :(

Rebel Yell -

When you're tired and lonely she gives you head

White Wedding -

Hey little sister, what have you done? Hey little sister, who's the only one? Hey little sister, who's your Superman?

Yeah loads by EMinem. Especially in Kill You - I'm not going to type it out here.

Mr Tinkertrain By Ozzy Osbourne, again not going to type it.

Luckystar777 · 08/02/2020 08:00

Lady in Red - Chris de Burgh

I've never seen you looking so lovely as you did tonight
I've never seen you shine so bright
I've never seen so many men ask you if you wanted to dance
They're looking for a little romance, given half a chance

summerlovin12 · 08/02/2020 08:04

'I Gotcha' ...... You made me a promise and you're gonna stick to it
You shouldn't have promised if you weren't gonna do it
You saw me and ran in another direction
I'll teach you to play with my affection
Now, give it here

You never should've promised to me, give it here
Don't hold back, now give it here
Don't say nothin', just give it here
Come on, give it here

ippdipdo · 08/02/2020 08:06

Barbie girl :

I'm a blond bimbo girl in a fantasy world
Dress me up, make it tight, I'm your dolly
You're my doll, rock'n'roll, feel the glamour in pink
Kiss me here, touch me there, hanky panky
You can touch
You can play
If you say "I'm always yours"

People let their daughters listen to this shit ?

Mammyloveswine · 08/02/2020 08:07

When I got married the played blurred lines and ran over and demanded he turn it off..

KidCaneGoat · 08/02/2020 08:08

Yeah under my thumb and runaway. Can’t believe the lyrics. So creepy

woodhill · 08/02/2020 08:20

It sure if Norwegian wood is that bad

Perhaps he lit a fire as he was cold?

Fitted into the music?

Kannet · 08/02/2020 08:22

I think barbie girl is supposed being sarcastic

RaelImperialAerosolKid · 08/02/2020 08:26

I've always been disturbed by the sentiment behind 'more than a woman'.

Is being a woman not enough - or is this one so elevated she's become an actual human being?

ClubfootMaestro · 08/02/2020 08:29

I’m always repulsed by Lloyd’s Dedication to My Ex - sample lyrics.

Hey ya
I came to talk about this girl that had my love
See
I went away for a while
And she gave my love away, huh
I really shouldn’t blame her
But now that pussy is a stranger
Baby, something’s on my mind I gotta say it
Yeah, Your pussy done changed
It ain't the same girl and that's a shame
(A crying shame baby)
Oh, ain't being funny
I know another bee’s been in that honey
Ooh, baby, that pussy done changed
It’s such a shame girl and that's a shame
(Who the hell you giving my loving to girl?)

Clawdy · 08/02/2020 08:39

Norwegian Wood misogynistic? ? The girl calls the shots all the way through it, and that ending is ambiguous anyway. There is such a thing as over-analysing songs. Although I do agree about Run For Your Life.

SleepingInYourFlowerbed · 08/02/2020 08:42

The Beatles write about literally everything. They have a song genuinely about a serial killer. It doesn't mean they believe/behave that way themselves.

Songwriters write about anything, not necessarily they're own point of view. Songs are stories, mini novels set to music if you like. Of course there's misogynistic music. There's misogynistic books and films and TV characters etc. There's also the opposite in everything.

Music is supposed to create a reaction in you, sometimes it's written to make you think. It doesn't have to be a happy reaction. What a dull world it would be if all music was a perfect love song without flaws...

So when you hear a misogynistic song, perhaps look at it from the point of view that the writer was making exactly the point you are thinking

Luckystar777 · 08/02/2020 08:43

OH yes that song in Pulp Fiction too

Girl, you'll be a woman soon :(

woodhill · 08/02/2020 08:45

John wrote run for your life.

It is out of place on the Beatle's for sale album I think?

Very jealous individual

CrazyBaubles · 08/02/2020 09:15

Friends by Anne-Marie is another, more recent example - yes it shows her being exasperated but the really sad thing is all the teenage girls who listen to her could pr obably think of at least one person in their lives that this song reminds them of:

Don't mess it up, talking that shit
Only gonna push me away, that's it
When you say you love me, that make me crazy
Here we go again
Don't go look at me with that look in your eye
You really ain't going away without a fight
You can't be reasoned with, I'm done being polite
I've told you one, two, three, four, five, six thousand times
Haven't I made it obvious?
Haven't I made it clear?
Want me to spell it out for you?
F-R-I-E-N-D-S

picklesdragonisawelshdragon · 08/02/2020 09:20

Some of these are absolutely knowing and deliberate though. You can't write off a song that's deliberately drawing attention to misogyny.

ippdipdo · 08/02/2020 09:27

I think barbie girl is supposed being sarcastic

I'm sure it is but younger girls aren't going to work that out.
