Ryanair 10kg carry on luggage and checking in

Bluewavescrashing · 05/02/2020 15:16

Flying to Prague for a long weekend--I paid extra for the 10kg carry on luggage plus a small bag for both of us, on both flights. (No need for hold luggage as we're only going for 3 nights). Do you carry both the bags to the gate?

Also, I've checked in online for the outgoing flight and printed the boarding passes as it costs 55 euros each to check in at the airport 🙄 BUT, I can't check in for the return flight until 48 hours before the flight. We won't have a printer to print the boarding passes in our hotel room. So, I can print them now at home and check in but only if I pay £18 extra for allocated seats. I didn't reserve seats on the outgoing flight and we're nearly sitting together anyway for that flight. No children involved.

So, my question is, are these the only 2 options for the return flight:

A) pay £18 now for allocated seats, print boarding passes at home, check in online now

B) check in at Prague Airport and pay 55 euros each

I haven't flown Ryanair before and am confused!

Will your hotel print boarding passes for you? Many do

Bluewavescrashing · 05/02/2020 15:20

Ah, I hadn't thought of that.

I'll probably just suck up the £18 and check in today at home. Prefer to be organised anyway!

Isn’t there an app so you can have a mobile boarding pass?

There is an app, however it can be temperamental according to an old thread on here, and if it isn't working you have to pay the 55 euros checking in fee.

I check in on the app and keep the boarding passes on my phone.

Yes you take your bags to the gate. Check the size. Your 10kg one needs to go up in the overhead locker and your other small bag under the seat in front.

Very unusual you can’t check in for the return flight yet.

Bluewavescrashing · 05/02/2020 15:26

I can check in for the return flight now but only if I choose to reserve seats. We didn't bother for the outgoing journey as we were put close together and it's only 2 hours.

With Ryanair, you can, but you have to pay to reserve a seat. If you want to check in without paying, you can only do this within 48 hours of each flight.

We just usually use the app and have never had any problems. You could probably also do it on the website using your phone or if you're in a hotel, sometimes there's a computer that you can use, but obviously it's not something you want to spend any time or brain space on during a weekend break, so it would be annoying if it didn't work the first time and then you'd probably wish you'd just paid the £18 to check in earlier.

Damnloginpopup · 05/02/2020 15:33

Download the app and when you check in online just screenshot it and send a copy to both phones in case of any other issues. WiFi or data should allow you to access the app and I've personally never had a problem - but go with the screenshot as connections in airports could theoretically be a problem

Yea, you carry the 10kg to the aircraft yours, you're paying to not go to check in.

Bluewavescrashing · 05/02/2020 15:33

Random allocation is not allowed for checking in over 48 hours in advance.

I’d prepare for your 10kg bag to go in the hold; they seem to take at least half the carry-on bags to go in the hold at the gate these days. But yes, take both to the gate and they’ll tag it up there if there’s no room in the lockers.

I’ve always just used the app for boarding and never had issues. Check with the hotel about whether it’s something they can help with -save yourself the £18 if they’ll be able to help, pay and save yourself the stress if they can’t.

Have fun!

BarbaraofSeville · 05/02/2020 15:36

How come the charge is £18 for two of you?

It says 'from £4' on your screenshot and that's what I thought the price was, not that I've ever paid it because I like to avoid all the 'optional' fees from the likes of Ryanair if I can as my little 'fuck you' back at them.

BadRuby · 05/02/2020 15:37

Doesn't help you now, but this is exactly why I will not fly with the likes of Ryanair and all their secret hidden charges. I'd rather pay a higher cost at face value and save myself the stress.

Email the hotel now and ask if they will print your boarding pass for you. Then at least you'll know if you're covered or need to try the app, etc.

Bluewavescrashing · 05/02/2020 15:39

No seats left at £4.

OP posts:
Peridot1 · 05/02/2020 15:42

Ah ok. I usually book my seat. Use Ryanair regularly to Dublin. If my flight is only 9.99 I don’t mind paying to choose a seat.

LimpidPools · 05/02/2020 15:42

Download the app. You can then check in while you are away. You scan the boarding passes on your phone when you're at the airport. This is the free option.

Do be aware that this is up until 2 hours before check-in closes. This is an expensive mistake. Which I have made.

Bluewavescrashing · 05/02/2020 15:42

Ooh I've got the app now. Looks easy. I can see the boarding passes for the outgoing flight on there.

The boarding passes I printed earlier on today for the outgoing flight from the Ryanair website said you have to print them and not just show them on your phone. But can you use the app boarding passes instead of printed ones?

OP posts:
eurochick · 05/02/2020 15:42

Just use the app. I always do that when I fly now. Take a charger with you though in case of delays.

When I did it, you had to save the boarding passes into Google pay or the Apple equivalent if you weren't printing them.

No idea why, I'd much rather have a piece of paper rather than have to faff around finding the correct screen on my phone in a check in queue, but if it saves money, I'll suck it up. Make sure your battery is charged!

Maybe also swap boarding passes with your travelling companion so you have back up in case a battery dies or a phone gets lost or damaged.

Embracelife · 05/02/2020 15:46

Just use the app. Save the image to your phone.

Heymacarana · 05/02/2020 15:46

I haven’t used a printed boarding pass on any airline for years.

Just use the app to check in, and like a PP said if you want to be belt and braces send a screenshot to each other’s phone.

On an iPhone it’s super easy and just goes in your “wallet”. It even shows as a notification on the lock screen around the time of boarding

Bluewavescrashing · 05/02/2020 15:47

Say what, now? 🤔

I usually end up checking in for the return leg in the hotel while I am away. Although the app is good, now that I have found it, if you have a smart phone, you can have your boarding passes on your phone rather than paper format.

PragmaticWench · 05/02/2020 15:51

Really do check the measurements of your 10kg bag, they're very strict usually. Last trip I had one bag a little too large and another a fair bit smaller, so ended up borrowing one.

Smelly50 · 05/02/2020 15:53

If you have paid to take carry on luggage it will go with you on plane .( this is why you pay extra to guarantee your 10 kg onboard) Re online check in put the ryan air app on both phones if poss ( just in case you lose/ break run out of charge etc ) then check in before return flight , whilst still away and just use your boarding passes on app.
