What to do about witnesses?

RedRed9 · 04/02/2020 09:55

Getting married soon and having a very, very small wedding: literally just us.

We obviously need two witnesses but for dramatic family reasons don’t want it to be any family members (long story but the simplified version is that it starts a ripple effect of other stressful family members being upset they weren’t asked). Also, our closest friends are away at the time.

I should add: the ceremony itself isn’t important to us. We’re doing it to be married, not to have a wedding.

What would you do?

Having literally just posted that I now realise the thread title sounds like I have witnesses to a murder that I need to deal with. 😂😂😂

You ask on mumsnet for two witnesses near you! It’s been done quite a few times! (I’m hoping you’re near me! I’d love to do this!)

Any friends will do op, just choose a nice couple or a mate each. Congratulations x

Where are you OP?

Absolutepowercorrupts · 04/02/2020 09:59

Ask on here, I've not been on Mumsnet for long but I've seen a few very lovely stories of Mumsnet users helping out as witnesses, taking dresses to Scotland etc.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 04/02/2020 10:00

Grab a few people from nearby? Most people will be happy to do it if they’re not in a rush. Or post on here/Twitter/local Facebook page and ask for people?

Mumdiva99 · 04/02/2020 10:02

Look, where are you, when is it....there are lots of people who would do it for you.

Whynosnowyet · 04/02/2020 10:02

Wink

LittleMissGrumpyGrot · 04/02/2020 10:05

Answer A after only reading the title:
Bury them in the desert.

Answer B after reading the actual question:
I'll do it!

icanclearabuffet · 04/02/2020 10:52

We asked the neighbours!
They were delighted!

Bluerussian · 04/02/2020 10:57

The registrar will sort out witnesses for you if you have not chosen any.

WhereAreTheAdults · 04/02/2020 11:01

Me! Me!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/02/2020 11:08

Initial response: see if a hitman will do a bulk discount and be more careful in future

Real response: grab a couple of the street or ask on here.

RedRed9 · 04/02/2020 11:25

Literally overwhelmed that people are offering! It’s just so lovely! I’m worried that when it came down to it people wouldn’t want to give up their time for strangers though? Do you think people would really commit to coming?

@Bluerussian will they for sure? Do I need to ask them ahead of time?

That’s so cute @icanclearabuffet ! We’re travelling to a different town (just because of fitting in a date) for ours though so I wouldn’t want to expect that of them.

@AnchorDownDeepBreath do you mean stand outside town hall and just ask people? I like that idea but I’m worried it’s a gamble that we’d run out of time before we found anyone!

What area are you in OP? Someone on here may be able to help you. I know I would!

Damntheman · 04/02/2020 11:31

My brother grabbed people off the street, wish I'd seen it the whole thing sounds wild!

Best of luck finding your witnesses OP!

MouseTails · 04/02/2020 11:35

I’ve read threads on here before where people needed witnesses and mumsnetters have done it. Also not uncommon to grab people off the street outside, if you get there a bit early I’m sure you’d have no problems.

I would definitely post your general area though I’m sure some people on here would love to help.

whiskersonkittenss · 04/02/2020 11:42

If you're getting married in Coventry or Birmingham I could be one of the witnesses. I'm on mat leave so can do most days!

finished31 · 04/02/2020 11:54

I remember a thread a few years ago like this when 2 mumsnetters were witnesses for a wedding.

Loads of people volunteered! Where are you OP?

Toddlerteaplease · 04/02/2020 12:01

I'd definitely do it if I was free and you were near me!

SunshineAngel · 04/02/2020 12:29

I would honestly come and be your witness if you were getting married close enough :).

Knitwit99 · 04/02/2020 12:30

If you're in or near Edinburgh I'd love to do it!

Riv12345 · 04/02/2020 12:38

I'm in Suffolk I would be honoured to do it.

If not all the very best for your big day Wine

Purplelion · 04/02/2020 12:41

I would definitely do this if someone asked me to!

puds11 · 04/02/2020 12:43

Where are you op? If you’re near me I’ll come!
