I've just been made redundant. I've no idea how I'm going to cope. What the hell do I do now?!

I don't know what I want from this post. I just feel so lost.

That's amazing...huge congratulations!!!!

heartshapedpositnotes · 05/02/2020 19:42

Now you'll be the person posting to people who have been made redundant saying 'don't worry, just get on it and you'll be fine'!

2018SoFarSoGreat · 05/02/2020 19:49

wonderful update, OP. Really pleased for you. Flowers

OhSoOuting · 05/02/2020 19:54

Well done! I would request your currrnt company put you on garden leave.

SidneyPrescott · 05/02/2020 20:02

Thank you all for the support. I'm so pleased. I still have a few interviews coming up which I'll still go to, just in case.

I'm not in London, unfortunately, as I love London.

I'm so torn. As I'm literally sat there doing nothing all day, and obviously people feel weird so they're not really talking to me - or giving me any work, but I don't want to let my colleagues down.

SidneyPrescott · 05/02/2020 20:04

My director just text me saying we'll catch up tomorrow (I'm in trouble with HR as I told them I had an interview and didn't go in after), so I'll ask then if I can finish before the end of the month. He's actually really understanding.

I can't start my new job earlier as I need security clearance.

Hadtoask · 05/02/2020 20:08

So sorry. I have no advice other than to say that in my experience another job will come up. You must feel dreadful now though. Don’t be too shy to go to the job centre if you need to.

Hadtoask · 05/02/2020 20:11

Also I think you are allowed to take as much time off as you need in your case. (You probably know that already). Good luck with the interviews!

Bluetrews25 · 05/02/2020 20:32

Congratulations!
Was coming on to say I was made redundant with 28 days notice a few years ago. It was awful. I was allowed PILON - payment in lieu of notice - so could just walk out the morning they agreed this. It was hard for a while and I took a good deal longer than you did to find another job, so you have done so, so well! That is brilliant
Onwards and upwards!

daisybrown37 · 05/02/2020 20:57

Well done. Started the redundancy process today but got a while to go to final outcome (which will be redundancy). Fortunately I have 12 weeks service so will get notice and redundancy pay. Hopefully I will find something as quickly as you have!

managedmis · 05/02/2020 21:34

Do you have to actually go in to work? They made you redundant?

SidneyPrescott · 05/02/2020 21:50

My redundancy letter states I'm expected to work until the 28th. I've never been here before myself, but I thought a form of garden leave was normal.

I'm going to explain how I'm feeling to my boss tomorrow. If they won't let me go, I'll see about getting signed off next week. I have enough sick leave to cover the rest of my notice period. I'm absolutely dreading going in tomorrow. I feel sick.

CheddarGorgeous · 06/02/2020 08:07

Seriously, what are they going to do? Sack you? That's wrongful dismissal right there.

SidneyPrescott · 06/02/2020 08:49

@CheddarGorgeous

What do you mean?

OP posts:
CheddarGorgeous · 06/02/2020 08:59

Sorry! I mean that I don't understand what sanctions they can take against you for taking time off work for interviews, especially if you don't have any actual work to do!

They can't sack you between now and the 28th, there simply wouldn't be enough time to go through any correct conduct process.

Garden leave is common but not a given.

I hope it works out for you and well done again in your new role.

SidneyPrescott · 06/02/2020 09:08

Ah. Thank you!

My director is being really nice about it, but HR (small company so just one woman) seems to be making everything so difficult. I'm pretty sure she will say my pay should be docked if I take any more time off.

I'm asking today so I'll update later. If not, I think I'll speak to my doctor next week. I'm not due in until this afternoon and my stomach is in knots!

OP posts:
NemophilistRebel · 06/02/2020 10:12

I’d be weighing up if I really needed to be there

I don’t think legally they can dock your pay even if you’re not there after being made redundant

You may risk your bonus though.

If I was comfortable enough not to miss the money and i dreaded it that much I’d be tempted not to go in and enjoy a few weeks before the new role.

FanSpamTastic · 06/02/2020 22:54

I'd go in sneezing and coughing, complaining of a temperature and have a bit of "flu"!

Do you have any accrued holiday to take - if you are calendar year you will have accrued 4 days for January and February. Take it!

Congratulations on the new job.

penguin246 · 07/02/2020 01:13

Don't burn bridges. Especially if you do not have the new contract in writing yet.

SidneyPrescott · 08/02/2020 21:53

Thank you, everyone.

I didn't get a chance to talk to my boss - I think he was avoiding me because he doesn't know what to say. I'll decide what I'm doing and talk to him on Monday.

OP posts:
SidneyPrescott · 10/02/2020 18:28

I've been signed off for a week.

CheddarGorgeous · 12/02/2020 15:49

look after yourself OP. Flowers Not long until you can say goodbye to them forever!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 12/02/2020 18:22

And well done you Sid for having some rainy day savings that took the pressure off a bit.

altiara · 12/02/2020 19:03

Congratulations on the new job! Flowers

SidneyPrescott · 12/02/2020 20:25

Thank you, everyone.

Mixed emotions at the moment. I'm so sad to be leaving but I'm excited to be utilising parts of my qualification that I've never needed before.
