Anyone think 14 units a week is really low?

The average bottle of wine is I believe about 9 units so 14 units is less than 2 bottles a week. I drink more than that! Does anyone think it’s pretty hard to stick to 14 units?

Never had a problem with it. Very very occasionally I’ll have more but we’re talking maybe two or three weeks per year.

ArfArfBarf · 27/01/2020 16:39

It seems a lot to me but that’s easy to say because alcohol is not my vice of choice (that would be sugar)

Scarsthelot · 27/01/2020 16:41

No it's not very low at all. Very easy to stay under that.

Katinski · 27/01/2020 16:41

Rubbish, actually. My coq au vin rouge takes a bottle, for starters and then there's the white/red wine I put in other dishes.
Oh! and of course there's Chef's PerksGrin

bigchris · 27/01/2020 16:41

Agree it's very low

If you share a bottle of wine of an evening you're already off which is what they do in Europe

AlaskaElfForGin · 27/01/2020 16:42

OP any second now you'll have posters saying you're obviously a raging alcoholic and that they only drink a thimble full of sherry when there's a full moon.

Herocomplex · 27/01/2020 16:42

Depends on the strength of the wine, look for a lower alcohol one?

You can drink as much as you want though, you just have to live with the consequences!

Seaandsand83 · 27/01/2020 16:43

That seems a lot to me!

OvalCanvas · 27/01/2020 16:43

No , I don't think it's hard to stick to.

I used to think it was hard to stick to , but I was drinking far too much at the time and was not in a good place.

Sadiee88 · 27/01/2020 16:44

Doesn’t seem much to me

Oldbutstillgotit · 27/01/2020 16:44

I get the impression that the majority of MN think a thimble of sherry at Christmas is cause for alarm. In my world 2/3/4/5 bottles of wine a week is normal. Strangely we all function well.

ExpletiveDelighted · 27/01/2020 16:45

I think its pretty reasonable.

BentNeckLady · 27/01/2020 16:45

When I used to drink a bottle of wine was usually 12-13%

I used to think 14 units was too low. I don’t since I acknowledged my drink problem 🤷🏽‍♀️

avocadoze · 27/01/2020 16:45

I think it’s masses. Don’t think I’ve ever had that much in a week. Different strokes for different folks and all that.

TippledPink · 27/01/2020 16:46

I don't drink much (maybe a couple of glasses a month?) But understand that's not the norm. I would think 14 units a week is about right, anymore (except as a one off) and I would think I was starting to have a drink problem.

FixTheBone · 27/01/2020 16:47

@katinski

Anything that you cook will lose some alcohol, about 75% per hour (depending on what it is, covered/uncovered, temperature etc)

Crockof · 27/01/2020 16:47

MN consumption is FAR below my village's consumption as seen on recycling day.

chomalungma · 27/01/2020 16:47

A large glass of wine is 250 ml. So it's about 6 large glasses. Not too difficult to do especially if you share a bottle after work in the evening or go out for a meal once a week.

Omashu · 27/01/2020 16:48

That’s a lot to me but I don’t really drink very often at all. And on a week when I do drink I don’t think I exceed 14 units. As a pp said, it depends what your vice is.

user1471523870 · 27/01/2020 16:51

It seems a lot to me, but I don't drink much.
To bigchris, I am from Europe and no, we don't drink big amounts on a regular basis. I don't know anyone who drinks half a bottle every evening.
Yes, many people, particularly from older generations, drink wine at every meal, but like a third of a glass, often diluted with water.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 27/01/2020 16:54

It’s really a lot to me, but I don’t drink.

The big question is, if you couldn’t drink it for a month (massive wine shortage maybe) would it bother you?

dementedpixie · 27/01/2020 16:58

I probably average that a week but only drink at the weekend. Bottle of wine and 2 double vodkas and you're there

noblegiraffe · 27/01/2020 16:59

I don’t drink on a school night so rarely drink 14 units a week. I think if you’re drinking most evenings it would be a good idea to cut down.

Peapod29 · 27/01/2020 16:59

Yes it’s low. But don’t expect MN to agree.

Raffles1981 · 27/01/2020 17:02

I used to think it was. But since having my son, there is no chance I'm hitting 14 units a week! I'm half that on some weeks, even less most of the time.
