Well I never, that’s where that town is!

I have spent fifty years - okay, cumulatively probably just fifty minutes - being utterly convinced Exeter was near Cambridge.

Today I had to check it in a map! Who knew? It’s kind of a Torquay/Plymouth way.

My world is tilting in its axel.

Anyone have other random finds like this?

CottonSock
I also thought Dunstable was I. Kent. I'm still not convinced

Next to Whitstable of course Wink

Breathmiller · 27/01/2020 20:26

Arundel?
Isn't that in the Shire? In Middle Earth? 🧝‍♂️🧝‍♀️

GiantKitten · 27/01/2020 20:32

Rivendell?

GiantKitten · 27/01/2020 20:33

If Pontefract should be in Wales, does that also apply to Ponteland?

Breathmiller · 27/01/2020 20:56

@GiantKitten
West of Brighton apparently.

Who knew?

GiantKitten · 27/01/2020 21:14

Oh, I’ve actually been to Arundel, Breathmiller - twice in fact! Grin

(But I live in the Shire. Sort of)

Breathmiller · 27/01/2020 22:55

@GiantKitten
Ohh...that is so cool. Smile
Are you a hobbit?

ErrolTheDragon · 27/01/2020 23:14

Quite apt that middle earth is near the centre of BritainGrin

I've canoed down the Brandywine, come to think, but that's somewhere else entirely.

Kirstymonkey3 · 28/01/2020 01:13

I grew up in Exton so know where it is!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 28/01/2020 02:33

I'm still reeling from the revelation that Usk isn't in Scotland.

I am hopeless with the "new" Welsh counties. I can name all.the English ones on an outline map but can't do the Welsh ones. In my defence, some of them are tiny. I can do the old ceremonial.counties with reasonable confidence.

I also though County Durham was in Ireland until I was in my 20s. I knew where Durham was but thought they were different places. I also didn't realise until I went to Ireland in my 30s that Dun Laoghaire and the "Dun Leary" I had heard spoken of were the same thing Blush

1066vegan · 28/01/2020 05:10

@EmmaGrundyforPM I didn't realise the Dun Laoghaire/Dunleary thing until I read your post 2 minutes ago!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 28/01/2020 06:44

@1066vegan Grin Grin

JulietJanuary · 28/01/2020 08:27

I recall searching for Dunleary on the map.

Walkacrossthesand · 28/01/2020 08:55

I live near Winchester, and always thought of it as 'upside down', i.e. the northern end was downhill of the southern end. Until someone said Confusedit lies east-west.... and they were right.

EBearhug · 28/01/2020 11:20

Interesting - I have always found Winchester a bit disorientating. Arriving by train always feels the wrong way round in particular. Driving a bit less so.

tomatoesandstew · 29/01/2020 17:05

@TheFaerieQueene that;s probably the reason i never find it when i search for it!

redwednesday · 29/01/2020 17:45

Winchester needs to be the other way round. In Southampton Above Bar must be north of Below Bar and Below Bar should be nearer to the coast than Above Bar. Not sure if it is though.

StCharlotte · 29/01/2020 17:58

Yes, Winchester Station us definitely the wrong end of town.

It once took me over an hour to find my way out of Winchester by car in the days of yore pre Sat nav. Closest to divorce we ever came...

ListeningQuietly · 29/01/2020 19:50

But the bus station is in the right place Wink

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 29/01/2020 20:00

I’ve always known, but In my mind Talacre is in the Canary Islands not Wales.

EBearhug · 29/01/2020 20:46

It once took me over an hour to find my way out of Winchester by car in the days of yore pre Sat nav.

Nah, that's just normal centre-of-Winchester driving, sat navigation or no...

marvellousnightforamooncup · 29/01/2020 20:54

That happened to me in Cardiff.

ListeningQuietly · 29/01/2020 20:58

St James Lane and Upper High Street are the secret keys to Winchester Wink

AlaskaElfForGin · 29/01/2020 21:05

Oh I love this thread.

In my head Barnstaple is in Yorkshire and Pontefract is in Wales. I know now they're not but they totally should be.
